Epic Journey Of JACC Broccoli Stir Fry And Other Small, Symbolic Gestures Of The "Revitalizer Class"

Blog post and photos by John Hoff

In my previous post about Banana Blossom Restaurant, click here, I made passing mention of their delicious broccoli stir fry and how Jordan Neighborhood super citizen Megan Goodmundson brought some of the leftover stir fry an epic distance, so I could be at the JACC neighborhood meeting "in spirit."

Pictured above is the stir fry in question, and the Riviera Motel in Joplin, Missouri where it was consumed far, far from the JACC meeting where it was originally served.

The motel was nothing to write home about. As a matter of fact...

...the wireless they promised on the marquee wasn't working, and I went out of my way to write a negative internet review, click here.

I've long said that wherever I happen to be, that's my neighborhood, and naturally I care about improving my neighborhood. So I will use whatever means are available, within my limited time and ability passing through "the momentary neighborhood." This might mean calling 911, calling 311 if the city happens to have a 311 system (like Dallas) or maybe just complaining to a manager at the motel about how, gee, your marquee promises internet but you aren't delivering internet. I will have to write a negative review, tsk tsk.

But back to that stir fry...

These are the kinds of small but deeply symbolic gestures that build morale among members of the "revitalizer class" in North Minneapolis. Gestures of this kind happen constantly but are rarely documented for posterity. The other day, for example, one Northsider was doing yardwork for another Northsider. The owner of the yard brought out some glasses of champagne to celebrate the transformation of the yard. By this gesture, it was like saying: you aren't just somebody I'm paying to perform chores, you are a friend.

In the past couple weeks, I've heard remarks about how home improvement projects seem to be happening all over the Hawthorne and Jordan neighborhoods: new roofs, new fences, all kinds of yard work. I spoke to a neighbor who was putting in a fence, and he told me--with obvious excitement--a rumor regarding a North Minneapolis church: supposedly, the church was hiring private security to patrol West Broadway. Now was the time, he said, to put improvements into homes, since the homes were going to keep rising in value along with the rising livability of the neighborhood.

Yes, it's terrible, some of the things that happen in North Minneapolis: young men who never had a decent chance at life, killing other young men from similar circumstances. But this is a tale of two cities. There is an entirely different class of Northsider enjoying a comfortable life, raising strong and educated families, building equity in their homes or, at least, holding on hard and waiting for mortgages to rise above water with the inevitable turnaround of the economy. These are the folks who drink champagne while doing yard work, and who won't accept low livability around them, and actively fight against it.

It can be a tiring and painful battle, trying to turn around an entire neighborhood in the face of deeply-rooted negative trends. It's even more frustrating when you have to leave the battle for weeks at a time to make a living. But then somebody makes a little gesture like bringing a plate of food hundreds of miles, and suddenly the battle doesn't seem so hard, the road doesn't seem so long, and morale among the "revitalizer class" has never been higher.

Serious Police Action At Pair Of Dice Pizza Thursday Night...

Photo and blog post by John Hoff

On Thursday something was definitely amiss at Pair Of Dice Pizza, one of my favorite North Minneapolis businesses whose product is enjoyed very much by my son, click here.

At about 9:30 PM, at least four squad cars were observed to descend on Pair of Dice Pizza, two of these squads were seen moving especially fast down 26th Avenue N. At Pair of Dice, a handful of police were talking to employees and...

...following this little talk, two of the squads made haste to comb the streets near Pair of Dice with searchlights. It seemed likely Pair of Dice had been robbed, but JNS blog did not seek out further info since--unforunately--these crimes are much too common and just snapping a low quality picture through the windshield seemed plenty for blogging purposes. However, I would suggest Northside residents who support Pair of Dice should go there and give them a little more support this week, to make up for whatever happened.

Great Southeast Asian Buffet At Banana Blossom Restaurant, 1724 Lowry Ave. N.

Photos and blog post by John Hoff

A couple of days ago, hungry after a disturbing incident involving some thug with a pit bull, click here, I decided to check out the buffet at Banana Blossom restaurant at 1724 Lowry Avenue N.

And, actually, I had enjoyed samples of their food twice before: Banana Blossom provided the refreshments at the recent Jordan Area Community Council (JACC) annual meeting, which came off for the second year in a row without a hitch. Megan Goodmundson, who organized the meeting, saved a plate of stir-fried broccoli, put it in a cooler, and brought it half the length of the country for me to eat. This way I could be...

..."present in spirit" at the JACC meeting.

A couple days ago, when Megan went to pick up a receipt to document the refreshment expenses--to distinguish these JACC expenses from, for example, late night prostate exams at Gabby's Saloon--(sorry, that's a bit of an in-joke based on dubious expenses racked up by JACC leadership from two years ago)--the nice folks at Banana Blossom offered us a buffet "on the house," but we were in a hurry and so accepted four egg rolls instead. They seem particularly proud of their egg rolls, and should be: the egg rolls are perfect, especially when dipped in homemade pepper sauce made right there at the restaurant.

What makes Banana Blossom unique compared to other buffets is the SOUTHEAST ASIAN aspect. There are dishes like sour salad, tripe soup, and various kinds of pickled vegetables which aren't found on standard Asian buffets. The buffet is not large, but it's very adequate and the establishment has a clean and bright atmosphere. Most of the customers eating there are Hmong. This restaurant appears to be primarily Southeast Asians cooking for Southeast Asians. It's an authentic cultural experience, like being let into a Hmong home for lunch. I wish I had perused the menu, because I suspect there might be some unique offerings.

Banana Blossom is also part of the revitalization and turnaround of Lowry Avenue, and we're all glad to see them arrive on the scene, even if their arrival is actually something of a "rebranding effort." If you live or work in North Minneapolis, and you've overlooked this establishment in the past, at least go there at lunch time and check out their offerings. You will not be sorry.

A Never Ending Graffiti Battle Along The Light Rail Line...

Photo and blog post by John Hoff

When I take the light rail line to pick up my 13-year-old son for visitation, meeting him at Mall of America, I make a point of racking up as many 311 calls as I can along my route. But once I see this building near Fort Snelling, I know I am beyond the jurisdiciton of the Minneapolis 311 system. All the same, the graffiti battle at this building fascinates me and has been the subject of a handful of blog postings, click here to pick up the virtual trail of writings.

Most recently, the building in question...

...has been the subject of repeated graffiti abatement efforts, but now the vandals have tried to hit the building with MUCH BIGGER LETTERS. If you look closely at the photo above, you can see where the paint-over took place at ground level, but the upper half of the building still bears graffiti scars.

Will the owners of the building literally rise to the challenge, and blot out this WHOLE NEW LEVEL of graffiti? I hope so. I will be observing their progress each time I pick up my son for weekend visitation.

Ugly Ass Blue Tarp Building Continues To Haunt West Broadway...

Photo and blog post by John Hoff

It seems a lifetime ago that I was writing about the "blue tarp house" on the perimeter of the Hawthorne EcoVillage, click here, but somehow--no matter how many times city officials manage to rid North Minneapolis of "blue tarp" structures, the spirit just keeps haunting us.

The latest example is the notorious "thug store" known as "Urban Exposure" which was (or is?) located at the J & H used furniture store. At this building, a thunderstorm...

...damaged the roof quite a while back, click here. The thunderstorm was fun and exciting when it happened, click here, but has mostly faded from our memory...except for this ongoing visual reminder of that dark and blustery night. J & H Furniture has tightly secured the tarp in question--you have to look rather closely to see it in the photo above--and appears to be making the tarp a permanent fixture as winter draws near.

Such a special building should have a special name, and the name should harmoniously match the West Broadway slumlord de-development plan spearheaded by Keith Reitman, whose slummy cost-saving brilliance has given us the "ugly ass chocolate brown building."

Therefore, I dub the building in question the "Ugly Ass Blue Tarp Building."

But, really, readers should feel free to come up with other nicknames.

The Last Of Senator Linda Higgins' VOTE TODAY Signs Makes Its Return...

Photo and blog post by John Hoff

Every general election, every primary, State Senator Linda Higgins (DFL, District 58) has a party the night before with a big pot of chili and homemade bread. She invites everybody over and asks her guests, when they leave, to grab two or three "VOTE TODAY" signs and place the signs at...

...highly visible locations at major intersections, at locations where it is lawful to place the signs.

Last night, my girlfriend Megan Goodmundson and I were driving by and saw one of the "VOTE TODAY" signs was still out, and had been knocked over. The sign was like a lost sheep which hadn't returned to its flock or, you might say, like one of those electoral races that's still hanging, unresolved, long after election night.

I fetched the sign; my vision illuminated by the flashing lights of a squad car which had somebody detained by the side of the road. The sign made its way back to Higgins' back yard, pictured above, and will no doubt see several years more of service getting out the vote.

Thug Terrorizes A Small Dog With A Snarling Pit Bull, MPD Saves The Day!

Photos and blog post by John Hoff

Yesterday, while taking a jog around the Jordan Pond, I was intercepted by a young black female who walked up and asked me, "That your dog?" I looked in the direction she was pointing, where I saw a young black man holding a terrifying pit bull. In close proximity was another young black female, and another young black male.

At first I was confused. Why would this young woman be asking me about the leashed pit bull? Then I saw...

A small white dog, some kind of stray, standing near the group. I told her, "No, sorry, that's not my dog."

At that moment, the young man with the pit bull proceeded to sic the pit bull on the small white dog. However, the young man didn't let go of the leash and the small white dog fled, terrified, just beyond the grasp of the pit bull's jaws. The guy in possession of the pit bull wasn't kidding around or merely teasing the small dog. Only the quick response of the little dog saved it from becoming the pit bull's chew toy.

At that moment the young female who had initially asked me about the little dog began shouting at the young man and, in fact, claimed a kind of protective ownership of the small dog, saying, "That's MY dog! Leave my dog alone!"

Realizing I was right in the middle of some kind of ridiculous hood drama which seemed about to turn violent at any moment, I ran back to the other end of Jordan Pond where I procured a cell phone and called 911, explaining how the young man with the pit bull had tried to make his "pit" maul a small, defenseless dog. Squad 420 responded in an especially quick manner and, in fact, the dispatcher helped guide the squad car right to the group as I kept the group in sight as far as 27th and James.

The first squad waited for back-up before leaving their vehicle, since the pit bull was, for all intents and purposes, a deadly weapon.

Another squad showed up, and then Animal Control arrived. About 20 minutes later, the police and Animal Control were still dealing with the group as I cruised by and took these pictures on the way to a delightful buffet lunch at Banana Blossom restaurant on Lowry Ave. N. The two males were in the back of the squad car, the two females were on the sidewalk with one of the females holding the pit bull in question.

This is a classic case of a "thug acting thuggy" and ignoring community standards of law-and-order, safety and decency. If these standards ever slipped in NoMi, they are certainly making a powerful comeback in recent years. These values are particularly strong and entrenched around the Jordan Pond, where litter hardly remains for a day until neighbors pick it up, where even stray branches are gathered up for community bonfires. If thugs want to act thuggy, they would be better off doing it somewhere besides the perimeter of the Jordan Pond.

Readers will, of course, want to know the fate of the small dog. I'm sorry, but I don't know. I went by and looked, but didn't see him. I hope he was merely out of his yard and is safe.

JNS BLOG EXCLUSIVE: Police Report In The Alleged "Church Service Assault" On Major Topps...

Stock photo and blog post by John Hoff

As part of ongoing efforts to sponsor a meaningful discussion about Major Topps--a man being hailed like a "savior of black youth" in some parts of the North Minneapolis community in the wake of his sudden death, but his interest in urban youth long regarded with suspicion in other parts of the community--this blog has been providing a community forum for discussion, click here, plus reporting any facts we can uncover. This is quite difficult. As of this moment, even the discussion PRAISING Major Topps appears to have dried up in other parts of the internet.

Some days ago this blog requested the police report for the assault incident and, this morning, that document hit our inbox.

1254 Russell Ave. N. Wiped Off The Face Of The Earth...

BEFORE
AFTER

Contributed photos, xoxo, blog post by John Hoff

Demolitions sometimes happen in Homewood, too. WHO KNEW?!

Above is a photo from a few months ago, and below is a photo from a few weeks ago of the demo-in-progress of 1254 Russell Ave. N., one of the very few demos in Homewood since the housing crisis.

This crappy little duplex achieved a moment of fame when, during the...

...campaign for Fifth Ward City Council, (Don Samuels versus four political midgets) boards on the windows were painted with the words "How Many Years Don?" as if the years of it being boarded and vacant had anything to do with Don Samuels and not with Natalie Johnson Lee, NRRC, the church which owned the building, etc. (Click here for a close-up photo of the Natalie Johnson Lee sign on the building)

And so another house which stood for as much as a century is wiped off the face of the earth. It's sad. I wish to see more renovation and revitalization and less demolition, even though some buildings undoubtedly need to go.

Here's a little musical serenade to mark the passing of 1254 Russell Ave. N., click here.

Details Of The True Vine Burglary Incident...

Mug shots, Top to bottom: William Joseph Flocken, Michael Ashuan Bradford, Joseph Erick Davitt.

Blog post by John Hoff

A burglary took place at True Vine Missionary Church back in early October, and even though this crime happened quite a while ago I believe it is never too late to make sure information about (alleged) no-accounts gets on the internet and stays there. The information about the suspects--including these mug shots, pictured--was distributed in an email alert sent by the Minneapolis police department but...

...emails don't exist in the searchable part of the internet which sticks around forever. Here are the names of the suspects and details of the crime.

True Vine Missionary Church Burglary

CASE SUMMARY:

Case Year: 2010 Case No. 304953

Incident Location: 26** Thomas AV N

Date and Time: 10/5/2010 2:09:00 AM - 10/5/2010 2:12:00 AM

Offenses Recorded: Burglary of Business -

Public Information:

Officers responded to the above address on a report of possible burglary. Three males similar in the description given by the W1 were located in the area. All three males were taken into custody and transported to HC Jail.

Arrested Parties, if any (name - age / Address Apt No City, State Zip):

Michael Bradford - 20 / 003018 Russell AV N Minneapolis, MN 55411

Joseph Davitt - 21 / 002509 Golden Valley RD 105 Minneapolis, MN 55411

William Flocken - 25 / 001718 Newton AV N Minneapolis, MN 55411
-----
I checked online court records on all three of these suspects, and found out they were clean: except for Joseph Davitt, who was once charged for failing to change his drivers license info and to heed a signal device...barely worth the time and effort to note on the record here.

I would be very interested to see if any forensic evidence matched the suspects and what was the disposition of this case.

JNS BLOG EXCLUSIVE: There Will Be No Recount In The Chanda Smith Baker Versus Rebecca Gagnon School Board Election Results...

Jacksonian Democracy stock photo and blog post by John Hoff

Word on the street is that, contrary to widespread expectations, there will be no recount in the close school board election results between Rebecca Gagnon and Chanda Smith Baker. The margin to trigger an automatic recount is one half of one percent. For a recount of results with a greater margin, the candidate must pay for the recount.

Word is Chanda Smith Baker's campaign...

...does not have the funds to pay for a recount, and therefore must accept the results of the election.

Commenters on the Northside point to "division within the black community" as the reason for Chanda Smith Baker's narrow defeat. For example, word is that perennial also-ran James Everett actually supported Rebecca Gagnon, a candidate who knew so little about administrative issues that she just kept answering "more parent involvement" as a catch-all phrase to cover her ignorance. Everett himself ran in the primary for the school board election but--as usual--couldn't drum up enough support to justify the waste of ink that having himself on the primary ballot caused.

Since James Everett and Rebecca Gagnon appear to have absolutely nothing in common except human DNA, it appears Everett only supported Gagnon out of spite for Chanda Smith Baker, who had the backing of moderate voices in the North Minneapolis community, something to which Everett is allergic.

Star Tribune Reporter: "If people will go on the record about Major Topps, I will talk to them..."

Stock photo and blog post by John Hoff

A few moments ago I spoke to Paul Walsh of the Star Tribune about his article regarding Major Topps, click here, who died of kidney failure in close proximity to a vicious beating which took place at New Bethel Baptist Church. (Another account of the incident says there was no beating, Topps was merely slapped) An online version of the article in the Star Tribune has been revised at least three times, however...

...Walsh stated this is normal for online stories. The online story matches the print version which will appear, and so these online stories get revised over and over due to--among other things--space considerations in the print version. Walsh said there was nothing out of the ordinary about these sorts of revisions and, in fact, offered to email me a copy of the original article.

When I told Walsh about concerns in the community over Major Topps and widespread, persistent rumors that Topps' interest in young boys wasn't entirely healthy, Walsh simply said this:

"If people will go on the record about Major Topps, I will talk to them."

Walsh's email at the Star Tribune is pwalsh@startribune.com

Major Topps Is Dead--More Information Comes Loose About The Assault At New Bethel Baptist Church!

Stock photo and blog post by John Hoff

As part of my recent effort to dig up information and promote necessary public discussion about Major Topps--whose recent death was announced in a richly-detailed and highly-nuanced article in the Star Tribune, click here--today while en route back to Minneapolis after a long absence, I spoke to a high-ranking police official who will remain anonymous.

According to my source...

The person who assaulted Major Topps at New Bethel Baptist Church was the husband of Topps' ex-wife. The reason for the assault and the very vicious nature of the assault remains unknown.

My source also stated he/she had heard of widespread rumors about Topp having an unhealthy interest in young boys, but had never heard of the nickname some in the community attached to Topps:

"Minor Bottoms."

A rather interesting and detailed discussion is taking place about Major Topps in other parts of the blogosphere, and this discussion can be easily turned up by Googling "Major Topps" or, for that matter, "GO LAY BY YOUR DISH DON."

Be sure to put quote marks around "GO LAY BY YOUR DISH DON" before hitting the search button.

If you just write GO LAY BY YOUR DISH DON but don't put it in quotes, it will not work.

Major Topps Is Dead--Now Let The Public Discussion Begin

Random stock photo by John Hoff

First of all, I did some quick checking and, generally, a legal claim for defamation dies with the plaintiff and heirs are not able to continue the claim. So--after trying for about two years to get a story about Major Topps, the surprising news this morning that Topps has died suddenly brings an opportunity to have an open and public discussion about this man, who has been a fixture in North Minneapolis youth circles for quite a while.

First of all...

...I know numerous individuals in North Minneapolis who--not quite jokingly--refer to Major Topps by a nickname which is a sort of play on words. Because of this play on words I have tried--for about two years--to find out if there's any fire where everybody says there is smoke. But I've turned up nobody who will go on record, though I did get an alarming secondhand report passed on by neighborhood super citizen Megan Goodmundson who knew two minors who participated in Major Topps' drum line.

Secondly, I would really love to know that back story about the assault on Major Topps described in the Star Tribune. I am strongly inclined to believe that if somebody assaulted Major Topps, there was a very good reason they were angry with him.

JNS BLOG EXCLUSIVE: Back Story On The Chanda Smith Baker Versus Rebecca Gagnon Recount Battle!

Contibuted DFL convention stock photo, xoxo, blog post by John Hoff

Today MinnPost.com published an intriguing story about the pending recount between school board candidates Chanda Smith Baker and Rebecca Gagnon, click here, who are separated not just by one percent of the vote total but also by a wide gulf of viewpoints and background.

Some of the interesting back story in this race made its way to me this morning...

First of all, as described in more detail by MinnPost, the Minneapolis School Board is phasing in a system whereby most seats would represent particular districts, and then there would also be a few at large seats. Though this "phasing in" scheme was probably not intended to temporarily deprive North Minneapolis of representation on the School Board, as events played out at the DFL convention in May it became increasingly clear how a certain combination of candidates in the race could create precisely that result in November.

Minneapolis is a DFL-dominated town. Very often, what happens at the city DFL convention effectively determines the final election because the GOP is so completely shut out. This may seem an odd thing to write this morning, as every television set in North America features news channels babbling about an overwhelming tide of GOP victories in yesterday's election, but we're just talking about this little Minneapolis school board race here, okay? The big beach of national politics is made up of many grains of sand, and I'm all over this one. Anyway...

At the DFL city convention in May, when it came to the issue of school board races, one candidate was easily and overwhelmingly endorsed. That was Richard "Dick" Mammen, who (to nobody's surprise) garnered more votes in last night's election than any other school board candidate. However, the next endorsement at the DFL convention was more of a battle. From a pool of many contenders, the race became a three-way-contest in which Rebecca Gagnon was dropped early for lack of support. The race for the endorsement at that point was between T. Williams, who is from North Minneapolis and was already an incumbent on the school board and Chanda Smith Baker, a newcomer to the school board political scene but a longtime North Minneapolis activist with deep family roots in the education system and, finally, David DeGrio, a white, openly gay, resident of Northeast. DeGrio is also a current school system employee.

In regard to T. Williams, some political analysts say he is a brilliant and fascinating man, but he just doesn't toot his own horn or campaign hard enough. Some in North Minneapolis were emotionally torn between T. Williams and Chanda Smith Baker, knowing that T. Williams is a laid back older gentleman, while Chanda seemed like the kind of energetic personality who would jump in headfirst in the battle to help North Minneapolis...an area sorely in need of help for its children, as evidenced by the recent controversy over whether to close North High.

In this three way battle between Williams, Smith Baker, and DeGrio, nobody was able to walk away with the DFL endorsement after five ballots.

The rules of the convention allowed for a motion to adjourn after five ballots and that's what the body of delegates chose to do because nobody was anywhere near 60 percent and there was no movement. One source provided numbers on the final vote and these numbers were on the Minneapolis issues list prior to being published here, and are as follows:

T. Williams, 48 percent.

David DeGrio, 47 percent.

Smith Baker had dropped out by the fifth vote, and her supporters apparently shifted to T. Williams. But this shift of support was still not enough for T. Williams to get the endorsement. The end result was an unsatisfying convention stalemate though, notably, Rebecca Gagnon wasn't even part of that stalemate. Gagnon was barely on the radar at the convention.

Right after this convention battle, an amazing thing happened. David DeGrio made a moral choice to drop out of the race and, instead, support Chanda Smith Baker. DeGrio articulated his reasoning on his website as follows: We can all do better when everyone is at the table. What this lovely thought apparently means, stripped right down to reality, is this: if DeGrio ran, he realized he would be contributing greatly to the stark possibility that North Minneapolis would be left without any representation on the school board until January of 2013. There was extensive discussion about this matter on the Minneapolis Issues List.

Meanwhile, despite a painful lack of support at the DFL convention, Rebecca Gagnon continued her campaign, most likely concentrating her door knocking in the affluent "fertile crescent" of Southwest Minneapolis, where she resides. Chanda Smith Baker campaigned all over the city, including North Minneapolis. The final results of this contest--unless anything is changed by the recount--have produced the very situation which DeGrio sought to avoid by dropping out of the race: North Minneapolis has no representation on the school board until 2013.

If the results stand, Rebecca Gagnon will become infamous as the school board member who deprived North Minneapolis of its "seat at the table."

Wiped Off The Face Of The Earth: 2655 Oliver Ave. N. And 2610 Newton Ave. N.

2655 Oliver Ave. N.
2610 Newton Ave. N.

Contributed photos, xoxo, blog post by John Hoff

Though it's sad to see old houses torn down, some of these structures that stood for one hundred years, many or even most of the houses being demolished in North Minneapolis are the worst of the worst. This was undoubtedly true of 2610 Newton Ave. N. It may not have been so true of 2655 Oliver Ave. N. but, well, that one is gone, too.

Both of these houses have been featured here, previously, on Johnny Northside Dot Com. In the case of...

...2655 Oliver Ave. N., this structure featured a scary little garage which kinda sort LOOKED like it might be occupied by squatters, but apparently never was, click here. This house was empty for a number of years and often featured litter in the yard from hookers and other no-accounts who frequented that corner. The house was sometimes tagged with the name of a particular gang which this blog will refrain from mentioning by name. But now I guess the gang will have to purchase flower seeds to spell out their identity on the vacant lot.

In the case of 2610 Newton Ave. N., this house has been tracked closely on this blog.

1. The house burned up, click here for article.

2. A closer look at the damage, click here.

3. Half a year after the house burns to a crisp, eviction paperwork hits the exterior. Better late than never, click here.

4. In February of this year, nobody is clearing the sidewalk. Surprise, surprise and CLICK HERE.

So now this blog post documents the demolition of the house. Considering the house stood for so long as an ugly, burned out shell, its demolition definitely represents progress.

Yet how much of this "progress" can our neighborhood take before there is no neighborhood left?

Clearly, North Minneapolis needs certain structures demolished; first and foremost the ones burned to a crisp. But what we need much worse are home owners willing to pour resources into saving and renovating these houses.

Michael Bierman Of 2701 Jersey Ave. S., St. Louis Park Arrested On Penn Ave. N.

Contributed stock photo, xoxo, blog post by John Hoff

Michael Bierman of 2701 Jersey Ave. S, St. Louis Park, Minnesota was recently arrested on suspicion of drug loitering on a notorious stretch of Penn Ave. N.

It is Bierman's bad, random luck that he will be highlighted here on Johnny Northside Dot Com as part of ongoing neighborhood efforts to clean up this sketchy part of North Minneapolis. Johns and drug seekers, be warned. If we see your vehicle picking up a hooker, you might end up right here, splattered all over the internet. If you get picked up by the police on Penn Ave. N., you and your home address might end up right here, tabloid style. KEEP YOUR CRIME OFF PENN AVENUE NORTH. 4th Street Saloon Mural Progressing...

Contributed photo, xoxo, blog post by John Hoff

Even as the worn out mural on the nearby Kemps facility was painted over, a new mural began to a emerge not very far away on the side of the 4th Street Saloon.

The mural doesn't seem to be finished, quite yet, but looks like a great work in progress. Everybody looks forward to seeing the finished product.
