Mugshot For "Mommy Stabber" Billy Nash...

DOC mug shots, therefore public domain, blog post by John Hoff

Billy Nash, who stabbed his wife 70 times in front of their two children (18 and 13) at 2423 Penn Ave. N., is now in prison. I like to publish the mug shots of North Minneapolis criminals...I think it gives a kind of finality to the story, plus it feeds image-hungry Google bots who don't crawl DOC websites.

According to the Minnesota Department of Corrections Offender Locator, Nash can look forward to release in the year 2036, right about the time...

...Libya elects its first female president, 10 new "virtual reality" episodes of "I Love Lucy" are released, and the underwater "chunnel" between Australia and Asia nears completion.

(OK, those predictions weren't on the DOC website, I just added that for flavor)

It is anticipated that Nash will be on supervised release until 2050.

Stabbing somebody one time, or even three times, shows a complete loss of emotional control that could happen to a lot of people.

Seventy stab wounds is, however, just pure evil.

JNS Blog Anti-Troll Comment Policy Extended Indefinitely, Free Speech Flourishes As A Result...

Photo and blog post by John Hoff

Which sounds more appealing? Anonymous comments by trolls on the Johnny Northside blog, or this gigantic camel spider?

I know what you're thinking: where can I get a camel spider paperweight like THAT one?

In any case...

A little more than a month ago, I announced this blog would reverse its former "free speech bloody free-for-all" policy and begin refusing to publish or even acknowledge the anonymous comments of trolls. I wanted to see if the discourse in this blog's comment forum would improve as a result.

Well, there *is* a noticeable improvement in the discourse.

I find this "no trolls" policy comparable to a moderator who tries to control a public meeting, especially when there are...

...half crazy, stinky people who want to yell things they consider SO MUCH MORE IMPORTANT than what everybody else has to say. By "everybody else" I mean the polite, decent people who are actually from the neighborhood and have a stake in what happens. The compulsive desire of "the crazies" to pour out their always-anonymous, psychotic bile at every opportunity is intimidating to those more quiet, thoughtful voices who have something much more valuable to say.

Yes, this blog will continue to encourage a vital exchange of ideas. If the creepy, anonymous individuals who want to make their ugly, personal remarks are willing to come here as themselves or with Blogspot profiles and monikers that can be linked to real people, then this blog will consider posting at least SOME of the nasty, stupid things they have to say.

Until then, the trolls have their own green-slime-dripping blogs where they can advocate for their mortgage fraudster friends doing time in prison, their butt ugly slumlord empires, their Level Three sex offender pervert pets, their coo-coo for Cocoa Puffs political candidates like Al Flowers, etc.

But the political and social changes created by the "NoMi revitalizer blogs" will be around long after the trolls and the crazies succumb to the inevitable psychological consequences of their own negativity and self-imposed marginalization.

And, at some level, the trolls KNOW this, which is why their voices are so shrill, angry, and desperate.

To my Northside friends who urged this blog policy change for months, even years:

You were right.

(ADDENDUM! FALSE ACCUSATION! SEE COMMENT STRING!) Criminal Record Of Jayton D. Simms, Accused of Attempting To Rape A 13-Year-Old Girl...

Stock photo and blog post by John Hoff

According to the Star Tribune, Jayton D. Simms, 34, is accused of attempting to rape a 13-year-old girl in North Minneapolis. Luckily, the girl was rescued by her brother, who "went all Rambo" and punched Simms in the jaw. Other relatives helped hold Simms down until police arrived.

These relatives of the girl did not kill Simms, and for that degree of respect for law, order and the justice system, they are to be commended.

Not surprisingly, Simms has a criminal record, and here it is...

02-CR-08-5749 949520 SIMMS, JAYTON DEON
02/11/1977 05/09/2008

Anoka Crim/Traf Mandatory
Closed Domestic Abuse - Violate No Contact Order-Misd
Contempt of Court - Willful Disobedience to Court Mandate

In regard to the theft charge, he pleaded guilty. His fine went unpaid and ended up with collections.

In regard to the domestic abuse and willful disobedience to court mandate, Simms was convicted of violating a no contact order. However, the willful disobedience rap was dropped. He appears to have done 30 days in jail for the domestic.

Not the worst criminal record ever but, of course, a "no account" and now headed down the path toward creepy sex offender.

Rufus O. Victor, Killer Of A Mother And Two Children, Release Date 2038...

DOC mugshot, therefore public domain, blog post by John Hoff

In the year 2038, poor and war torn Afghanistan will be an economic powerhouse, (the South Korea of Central Asia) wooly mammoth will once again roam the Siberian tundra after being brought back to life by clever Russian scientists, my son Alex Hoff will be the billionaire owner of the world's foremost robot manufacturing company, and Rufus O. Victor (who killed a mother and two children while fleeing the police in North Minneapolis) will...

...emerge from prison, his dreadlocks now completely gray.

True, it may not be news that somebody's mug shot has finally appeared on the Minnesota Department of Corrections offender locator website, but it seems like these images are not crawled by Googlebots. And I think anybody searching for an image of Rufus O. Victor should be able to find his mug shot conveniently, and readers of Johnny Northside Dot Com should see how Rufus looked before the big iron door went slam.

Look closely at his eyes in the frontal photo.

Is that a TEAR I see?

Who do you feel bad for, Rufus? The mother and two children you killed? Or your own sorry self?

NoMi Pumpkins = NoMi Progress?

Photos and blog post by Nomi Passenger

Did you ever think something as common as fall pumpkins would be a bright, blinking neon sign of an inner city decaying neighborhood pulling itself out of unhealthy dysfunction and crawling towards a vibrant, well-rounded, diversified community?

Well, when you stumble upon a rustic fall pumpkin and harvest store on Lowry Avenue, complete with twinkling lights, handmade winter mittens and dogwood twig topiaries you can't help but jump for joy at an unexpected indication of the revitalization we all strive to bring forth around here.

Sometimes life in NoMi feels like two steps forward.... one step back. One step forward...two steps back.

Win the fight of closing an inconvenience store.

A teen is shot and killed outside a house party.

Gayborhood of the Year.

Another sex offender moves in down the block.

A victory against mortgage fraud.

Two thugs clash and one ends up dead.  And then a year later his family incites a riot at his memorial.

A new, classy cafe and a darling gift shoppe right next to it.

A tornado tears across the northside multiplying the blight times a zillion.

You get the idea.

But every once in a while the universe throws us those little indications that our community is changing for the good of everyone, including the folks who have less of everything, material as well as immaterial.  Diluting the ills of inner city living with the good things brought on by folks who are law abiding, educated and determined to restore their home, their community and restore more wholesome values block by block.

It's a sign that our community is placing more emphasis on these healthy recreational past times and less emphasis on unhealthy past times like glorifying materialism with chrome spinning rims and little miniature motorcycles that serve no purpose except to entertain adults who are under the influence and annoy the living crap out of the neighbor who is trying to enjoy their summer garden.

For the past few weekends, on the corner of Lowry and Vincent, Nomi Homies have been able to get their pumpkins, gourds, squash, potatoes, corn stalks, straw bales and more from a charming seasonal business run by the property owner Eric Hansen. Eric and his brother have owned the piece of property for the past 14 years, previously operating their Hansen Bros Fence Company from that site. Since then they have relocated that business and have offered this piece of property up for sale, but no agreeable sale has come through for them.

Eric grew up here on the northside and his wife still works within walking distance of his pumpkin harvest stand, at North Memorial. He wants to see the community progress forward and he had the desire to bring something to this market that isn't already here, that would be found elsewhere, like 50th and France,  for a much higher price.  But he wants to provide it here at a more than reasonable price for all to enjoy. He said "Why shouldn't north Minneapolis have a pumpkin stand?"

Pumpkins of all shapes and sizes are available starting at $1 for pie pumpkins, $2 for "misfits" (with odd shapes, blemishes or other mishaps of mother nature), $3 for small carving pumpkins and $5 for large carving pumpkins. The Hansens come from a farming family. The nephews grow and haul in the pumpkins. The brothers-in-law brought in locally grown russet potatoes. Goregeous, bright potatoes, 20 for $2. Seriously? Cub can't beat this potato deal.

Eric's neighbor makes handmade wool winter mittens and gloves. Recycled wool, fleece inserts. She sells them at hockey arenas all around the state. She sent a huge bag full with Eric for his harvest store.

Other seasonal and outdoor decor available includes corn stalks, straw bales, decorative gourds, dogwood twig topiaries with intertwined twinkle lights, ornamental wrought iron, and bundles of cedar planks (left over scraps from his fence company, I LOVE the reuse mentality of this guy!). Eric says not only are the cedar planks great for fires obviously, but his wife soaks them in water, rubs some oil on them and grills or broils her fish dinners - yum!

Northside company, By The Barrel has some last remaining planters, compost barrels and rain barrels available.

Here's what got me the most excited when I finally had a chance to stop and chat with Eric today: he's hoping to make enough money from the pumpkin harvest stand to do a seasonal Christmas tree stand later in November and December. And then... if that goes well, and the property doesn't sell, he's thinking of doing a farm and garden nursery at that site. Hello?? Progress?? Is that you knocking on our door?? Please! COME IN! I INSIST!!!

But here's the deal, he's only doing the pumpkin thing one more weekend. ONE MORE WEEKEND FOLKS! Get your bee-hind there today (Sunday, October 23 8a-5p) or next Saturday and Sunday (10/29 and 30 8a-5p) and buy, buy, buy! Eric says everything is for sale! You see something you like, make an offer. Throw some money at him! Tell him you want a Christmas tree stand, with piped in holiday music and hot chocolate and cider. A fire pit burning off in the corner. Spruce tops and garland for the outside planters and window boxes. Big red ribbon bows to deck the halls! Walk down Lowry and have some lunch at Tootie's or Lowry Cafe. Go holiday gift shopping at The Goddess of Glass and Northend Hardware. Get your baking ingredients from Aldi and then return to the next day to get a hardcore workout at Doc's Gym.

Seriously people, this is progress! Let's capitalize on it and push it forward! Go spend money there on Saturday October 29 and Sunday October 30.  And say Hi to Eric for me.

Slumlord Keith Reitman's Ugly Twin Sisters At 26th And Penn Ave. N.

Contributed photo, xoxo, blog post by John Hoff

Featuring the bastard color known as "Reitman blue," strongly suspected to be the result of mixing a very large batch of multi-color leftover paint all together, the unsightly houses at 26th and Penn Ave. N. are classic Keith Reitman: an ugly, slummy, unsafe, off-color eyesore smack dab in the middle of everything.

These houses were ugly before the tornado. Now they are...

Hennepin County Jail Roster-O-Rama! August 29 To October 17, 2011

Stock photo and blog post by John Hoff

Last night I watched "True Grit" for the umpteenth time on my laptop. (The recent remake, I mean, not the classic with John Wayne)

On a Forward Operating Base in Afghanistan, a laptop is what you might call a "home entertainment center." I only have a limited number of movie files in that computer so...

True Grit. Again.

The reason I mention this is because of something the main character, Mattie Ross, says at the end of the movie: Time just gets away from us. So it is I haven't published the Hennepin County Jail Roster since, oh my word, August 29....

Post Tornado BLO News (Broadway Liquor Outlet)

Photo and blog post by Nomi Passenger

The photo displayed above was taken the day after the infamous Nomi Tornado.  Broadway Liquor Outlet, at the corner of Penn and Broadway, was in the direct path of the twister and, well, you might say took a hard BLO (ha, punny, but not funny).

The much loved northside business has been closed for business since that nasty Sunday in May.  Owner Dean Rose recently attended a neighborhood meeting and I got the BLO-down on what he is hoping and planning for the future...

In 1938, A High Profile Murder At 1213 Washington Ave. N.

Geek squad logo used as part of First Amendment comment and criticism, blog post by John Hoff

Currently, 1213 Washington Ave. N. is the site of a Best Buy "Geek Squad" facility. There is no exterior indication that, in May of 1938, the street in front of that address was the location of a high profile murder...

Keeping Up With The Gomezes (A Handy Dandy Guide, The Long Awaited PART TWO!)

DOC mug shots, therefore public domain, blog post by
John Hoff

As discussed in Part One of my blog post about the multi-generation, criminally-inclined Gomez family of North Minneapolis, once upon a time there were seven siblings, all with the same father, all named "Gomez" except for the last one, who was named Joey Smith.

(Smith, who recently did a stretch in prison, is pictured)

The names of these siblings were as follows:

Mark Gomez
Carmen Gomez
Camille Gomez
Charden Gomez
Charlean Gomez
Darien Gomez
Joey Smith

My last "Gomez family" blog post discussed Carmen and Camille, the twins, as well as Charlean, who died of a drug overdose. We also discussed Charden, who murdered some old people in their home and currently sits in prison.

So, of the original seven siblings, that leaves Mark Gomez, Darien Gomez, and Joey Smith.

Well, as Paul Harvey would say, here is THE REST OF THE STORY...

Mark Gomez was bad seed like all the rest of them. He was born MARK SHAWN GOMEZ on 07/09/1964 and as for his criminal record, he is mostly a thief like the twins, Carmen (mother of tragic young Rayjon Gomez) and her identical twin sister, Camille.

For some reason, when you search the criminal record of Mark Shawn Gomez, another record keeps popping up: John Allen Ingram, born (allegedly) on 07/11/1966.

That's a real handy birthday to remember, I might add.

"Seven Eleven."

It is unknown if John Allen Ingram is an alias of Mark Shawn Gomez, or a known criminal associate, or if the intermingling of the data on the Minnesota Courts website is some kind of fluke. I put it out there for what it is worth.

Now, as for Darien Gomez, who is DARIEN JAMALL GOMEZ born 09/02/1965, his apple didn't fall far from the rest of the Gomez family tree.

He, too, is primarily a thief:

This brings us to the baby of the family, seventh sibling Joey Smith, whose cute rolly polly picture compliments this blog post.

When I first started digging into the Gomez family tree (with invaluable assistance from an anonymous source, you know who you are!) Joey was sitting in prison.

However, his release date is October of 2011.

Oops. Time flies. Here it is October of 2011, and when I check the Department of Corrections website, Joey Smith is no longer there. Good thing I downloaded his DOC mug shots back in September.

Here's Joey's record. Note how it starts all the way back in 1987! The number one song that year was Walk Like An Egyptian. I'm just sayin'.

I've never even SEEN that one before.

Pardon the tangent. Back to "our" Joey Smith.

So it was a case of Joey winning some and losing some, but at the end of the day the court went home to dinner and Joey went to prison, so who was the loser? Joey.

It would be nice to say this is the end of the Gomez family history. But, clearly, it's not. This criminal rat pack is running the streets of North Minneapolis, committing crimes.

What have we learned from all this? Well, I think we need to focus on "bored shooter" Malo Gomez and realize the lesson is as follows:

IF YOU POP OFF ROUNDS at our fine North Minneapolis police officers just because you are BORED, then your sordid four-generation family history is fair game for blogging and public discussion.

So don't. Do. That.

Let me translate it into thug-ese:

Don't. Do. That. And shit.

This blogger seeks information about who were the patriarch and matriarchs of this seven sibling criminal brood? Pictures of the Gomez's who have not yet had their mug shots published on this blog would also be welcome.

Goodbye Crackhouse, Hello Beautiful NoMi Fixer Upper!

Photo courtesy of DuAll Services, blog post by John Hoff

The Director of Communications for DuAll Services sent me an email with a link to a very interesting, expressive post about "cleaning out a crack house," click here.

The blog post in question is so much better than the usual "look, our company is using social media" dry-as-hell, boring b.s. one SO OFTEN sees. In fact, it's amazingly expressive and downright literary. How did THAT happen?

Now, I know the email is basically looking for a plug on my blog but you know what? You write that well about transforming NoMi, you get a plug!

Besides, I look at the photo above and my eyes don't fixate upon all the crap. All I see is that lovely archway in the living room, and I think about how this FORMER crack house could be a wonderful home, much loved by its owner.

And, I might add, probably a bargain at twice the price.

Sad, Ridiculous Little "Springboard Economic Development Corporation" Event October 22...

Chism stock photo and blog post by John Hoff

All the way from Afghanistan I can take a moment to be amused at the spam-oidal email I received from Springboard Economic Development Corporation. God only knows why I'm still on their email list, but I am.

Springboard is, of course, a sort of Lennie "Heckler" Chism entity with a heavy touch of Don "Ponzi Scheme" Allen.

Lennie is the notorious woman-abuser who came in fifth place in a five-man race for the Fifth Ward last political cycle, actually getting less votes than a garden gnome. And Don Allen is, well, here's a link that says all you need to know about Don Allen, click here.

So here's the laugh-aloud-funny "invitation" I received by email here on the other side of the planet, when I have time to clear out my inbox spam in between watching for vehicle-borne IEDs to come across the wire...

-------------------------------------------------------------
Hello John!

You are invited to the following event:

You're Invited - Sat, Oct 22nd 9am, Minorities ASKING - Where are our JOBS/CONTRACTS on Federal Funded Projects, Light Rail, MnDOT? Let's Talk Solution - Invited Gov. Dayton, Sen. Klobuchar, Rep. Ellison, Rep. McCollum, LETTER for JOB SUMMIT, CONGRESS

Event to be held at the following time, date, and location:
Attend Event

Oct 22, 2011
9:00 AM - 12:00 PM

4801 4th Ave South
Minneapolis, MN 55419

Dirty JOBS??? Where are OURS? JOBs/Contracts Enforcement? “It’s my responsibility and the responsibility of the MnDOT director to make sure that happens,” Dayton said to Chism. “Every six months, if you don’t see progress … give me a call.” ...

We hope you can make it!

Cheers,
Springboard Economic Develoment Corporation
---------------------------------------------------------------

Please note that last word "Develoment" is spelled just the way it was on the email.

Yes, this entity literally can't SPELL "development." I don't know who authored the email but, of course, atrocious spelling, bad grammar, excessive capitalization and lack of proof reading are pretty much Don Allen hallmarks.

Note how the author of the email name drops a whole bunch of important folks who are "invited" to the event.

Oh, yeah, like the governor will be there. The state senator.

The only way THAT would happen would be if it were NOT a Springboard event, but Springboard were merely publicizing another entity's event as though it were their own. Then it might happen.

In typical con man fashion, Springboard tries to make itself seem like much more of a successful player than it is.

When these important folks don't show up at this event, then there will be a hue and cry: Why are they ignoring us? Why won't they come and talk about these issues? THEY WERE INVITED.

From the other side of the world, I am calling bulls*** on the email publicity surrounding this October 22 event or, shall I say, non-event.

NoMi Neighbor Says "Oh Hell NO" to Copper Thief...

Photo shared by Drother, Blog Post by Nomi Passenger

Just for the sake of sharing the success story, not to mention also to bump down the picture of those bad boys with guns, (see previous blog post) here is some good news being shared around the Jordan neighborhood listserv.

An observent and protective neighbor, who I like to call Drother, shared the above photo and reported the following:

"Copper thief just got away! Greasy white male 40 yrs old, shoulder  length brown hair, 200 lbs wearing blue hooding and blue sweat pants just tried to break into 2640 Sheridan. I chased him over 2 fences but he got away. He left the bike he was riding and some copper in his bag (see photo). If the bike was stolen from you call the 4th precinct. "

Good job, Drother! Every block needs a Drother or two.

So, like he says, if you think that's your bike (or copper, lol) call the 4th.  And if you can, put the word out on the copper thief communicaiton wire ~ "Not in this neighborhood!"
