JNS BLOG EXCLUSIVE: Lt. Jeff Rugel To Take Command Of Gang Enforcement, Crime Intel Unit...

Information which first surfaced on the "back fence open thread" of this blog has now been confirmed. Lt. Jeff Rugel is leaving the Fourth Precinct.

Rugel is loved and respected by the decent people of the Fourth Precinct, the ones working to make the neighborhood better.

His reputation is squeaky clean, which is apparently one reason he was selected for his challenging, politically-red-hot new assignment.

Here is the information Rugel shared in an email to many neighborhood leaders...

Effective Sunday July 5th I will be transferring out of the 4th Pct and into a new assignment as the lieutenant of the gang enforcement and crime intel unit. This unit is being created to address the gang problems here in Minneapolis in the wake of the controversy surrounding the Gang Strike Force.

Though this was not an assignment I sought out, I am excited for the challenge and looking forward to doing a different type of police work for a while.

My replacement here in sector 2 will be Lt. Jim Heimerl. He is a veteran lieutenant with a ton of experience in crime prevention and I am sure you will all find him great to work with.

Best of luck to all of you as you continue working to improve the north side, making it a safe place to live and work.

(JNS says: That would be "NoMi." Sir.)

Best regards,

Lt. Jeff Rugel

Minneapolis Police 4th Pct

The ladies who read this blog would appreciate one last picture of him in his uniform, for our enjoyment.

She doesn't feel like sharing.

Lt Rugel, thanks for all your hard work - I just finished reading the Strib article about drop in homicides - and I know good cops like you have greatly contributed to that drop.

Best wishes for you in your new assignment, I'd say good luck but I know it's not luck, it's skill and hard work that make you great.

Please keep in touch with our community and let us know what we can do to help the gang unit. We'd all like to contribute to fighting gang crime in some way.
