Why does he need to be on the radar? Based off a list of houses he owns?
ReplyDeletePuppet... Political Puppet.
I'm going to have to agree with anon 1:08. While I support creating a culture where it is widely known that if you buy numerous properties in Minneapolis you wil be watched closely, there needs to be a higher bar for putting someone on a radar screen.
ReplyDeleteI was planning on going around to some of these properties and seeing if they are slummy. If anyone wants to do that first and send info to this blog, they are most welcome.
But I'd encourage judgment-good OR bad-to be reserved until we know more.
I know for sure that he has numerous open housing code violations and administrative citations. I also know that he numerous properties in Hawthorne that are problem properties. He has made numerous promises to clean them up, but nothing has ever come of it. I don't know if all of these properties are problems, but the ones that I do know of, are problems.
ReplyDeleteI have no problem with people owning large amount of properties. But I do have a problem when they don't keep them up to snuff.
RE: Paul Bertelson belongs on the radar:
ReplyDeleteI am wanting to know what percentage of multi-property owners have some sort of code violation or 311 report or something against at least one of their properties? Lets face it, the northside has a lot of houses that are 100 years old. How nice are they expected to look? Is there a difference in the eyes of the powers that be, if a rental property is managed by the owner or a management company?
Just wanted to chime in and say that I live next door to one of these houses and it is a problem, however not due to the house being in need of repair but just really really really bad tenants. Over the last three years it's been three different groups of people, but it's usually the same story. Too many people for the house, lots of kids, coming and going at all times of the day, cars idling in the street a lot of the time, and lots of noisy stuff at night. The cops finally seemed to take a notice last week when someone got shot on the block, but the family still remains there after a police raid on Saturday. Paul was nice enough to introduce himself to me, but it remains to be seen what can be done about the problem renters.

ReplyDeleteI have pics of the police raid too.
Anon 6:28 you must be a neighbor of mine on Humboldt? Wonder if you made as many police reports on this property as I have?
I have not met "Paul" but have very little sympathy for creeps like him that obviously are renting substandard housing to the lowest strata of the human species while polluting our neighborhoods with this type of behavior and profiting off it with our own tax dollars that are paid to him through entitlement programs.
Where does he live?

ReplyDeleteHere is Paul Bertelson's Bio from his corporation web site.
Something kind of creepy about a slumlord who is this vested with children's programs.
I can tell you that the two small children who where in tears as the SWAT team hauled the shooting victims out of his rental while their parents were handcuffed in the back of the squad car could have benefited from all the wonderful things he claims to do for children.
Thanks for contributing Paul!
I've seen the inside of a home that he had rented to a family- there were holes rotted through the subfloor, and rotting everything else in the home. I understand that 100+ year old homes have issues, as I have a home that old, which I have dubbed the money pit. However, there is a big difference between looking old and needing some updates and being dangerous to live in. I do believe that slumlords should not be allowed to get away with this. Buying up homes in a down neighborhood and running down the homes is not acceptable and these people need to be exposed. Not just exposed on this website, but in their own communities. It is extremely disturbing that this man claims to be helping youth while small children are living in homes with rotting floors... so that he can cash flow his rentals. Such a sick double standard. I am a landlord too and I know it is hard to reconcile the cost of keeping an old home in shape with a bottom line, but then maybe these people should try making their fortune some other way than taking advantage of people in these neighborhoods. Duplexes, especially old duplexes in need of rehab are nearly impossible to cash flow in the first 10+ years of ownership. If landlords want low maintenance and better rent, 4+ unit buildings with shared heat and electric, one roof, etc. are what they should be dealing with. I'm just sick of people defending landlords because they are just trying to make money- owning rentals is not a get rich quick scheme!!
ReplyDeleteMolly MM-I am not aware of any property I own or manage that has "holes rotted through the subfloor, and rotting everything else in the home" Would you be so kind as to contact me at renewdev@gmail.com so that I might address any possible problem? Thank You
ReplyDeletePaul Bertelson
Paul--if that is you--as long as you are wanting to tell your side of the story feel free to contact me by email and, well, spill it out so I can publish it. Or feel free to use the comments function.
ReplyDeleteLooks like he just did use the comments section and even included an email address. Thanks for playing however.

Here is the owner of 2815 Humboldt, though Paul Bertelson is listed as the point of contact on the rental license.
ReplyDeleteMission Inn Minnesota Inc
4630 3rd Ave S Minneapolis Mn 55419
The correct spelling is "Humboldt," not "Humbolt" like I typed above but, in my defense, it was spelled wrong on the jail roster.
Hi John, here is the story on 2815 Humboldt. The property was rented to a couple on a month to month lease(recommended by safe officer). We had MCC do our background check-criminal,credit and UD history on the couple. The couple moved in and after several months, they made a very poor decision and allowed Mr. Daley to reside in the house without our knowledge or permission. On the morning of the discharge a neighbor called me to inform me of the incident. Fortunately, I was working in the neighborhood and was able to get there in time to talk to the neighbors and police. After talking to the police I spoke with the couple. I reminded them that they had signed a crimefree addendum to their lease. I gave them the option of moving out voluntarily within 7 days or I would file a UD the next business day. They chose to move which they did do within the 7 days. We were able to do repairs and have since rented to a family that we had rented to in a very positive manner in the past. We have not had any 911/police reports on the property since the incident.
ReplyDeleteNothing personal, but in the past few days I have figured out the Hennepin County online jail roster is golden as far as connecting no account criminals with the slumlords that rent to them.
ReplyDeleteSo I'm going to be connecting the names with the addresses with the property owners and let the chips fall where they may. This same forum provides opportunities for substantive comment of a non-troll nature.
To Johnny Northside - do you work? Do you have a real job? I have never seen such a non probative bunch of nonsense in my life. I feel sorry for you, to live in such a world of hate!
ReplyDeleteWhat I want is a neighborhood that's decent for my child. Slumlords stand in the way of that. Slumlords and the criminals who gravitate to their slummy dwellings-for-hire.
ReplyDeleteSo instead of choosing a good neighborhood for your child, you moved into a crime filled ghetto which you are trying to clean up?
ReplyDeleteSounds like your child is not your priority. Being a crime fighting blogger appears to be higher on your list than your son. And you attract so much negative attention towards yourself, you may endanger your child's safety.
Pathetic!
Normally I'd go into some detail and answer what you're saying but you know what? The story of what I did and why I did it is all over this blog. And every day is a good day to take on slumlords who rent to criminals. I have a nice blog post to write about a new city policy...
ReplyDeleteWow, this story was posted fourteen months ago .That's amazing as is anonameass 10:36 and their comment about moving into a crime infested "Ghetto". Contrary to whatever is sensationalized in the local or national media i will tell you that North Minneapolis is not a "Ghetto" and you do not(can i assume?...thanks and don't tell no one, tell someone) know what a true"Ghetto" is. Yaweh, i was trying to be nice and not get an attitude and be "unpleasant" as one vegetable nation insists i am. I cannot deny my unpleasantness, case closed. SO, you see your way to where the fire is hot,10:36, and let those fighting the battles continue to do so. A humonguos fuck you and i hope you get mugged in Kenwood someday. Your punk statement about John not caring for his kid because he chooses to live in this unique area will build more character in his sons pinky than you'll ever have in your entire body. You do not know shit about North Minneapolis except what you see in pictures or have somebody read to you. One Adam-12, see all the idiots. Good Day.
ReplyDeleteSo Paul...Which is it?
ReplyDeleteCaring humanitarian looking out for the interests of children and impoverished families...
or
Scrupulous poverty pimp collecting government subsidies to warehouse thugs and deviants in sub-standard hell holes that create nuisance and dangerous conditions for the families that live in these communities?
Because it can't be both and while you profess christian ideas your track records indicate the latter.
I see you as the creep you are.
Great documentation about Paul Bertelson on the North By Northside blog:
ReplyDeleteClick here to get the slummy scoop!
Oh, in answer to the last anonymous commenter, I will try to answer the question on behalf of Paul Bertelson, in a musical tribute:
ReplyDeleteClick here for "Hell Hole" by Spinal Tap
Paul Bertelson is a FUCK.
ReplyDeleteAdd to your list of addresses 722 Russell Ave N.
I think Bertelson may live at 4630 3rd Ave S. in Mpls.
His phone numbers are:
home: 612-825-0100
cell: 612-308-2967
Please call him!
-Low End Leroy
I have approved this comment because Low End Leroy contacted me by email and I believe the info to be reliable and Paul Bertelson, well, he belongs on the radar of city officials.
ReplyDeleteBe careful on thinking that just because someone puts down an address that he really lives there. I have a few rentals and sometimes I get notices that someone that was in a crime or arrested live in my property. I call the police and tell them that person does not live there. They tell me that is the address they gave them, yet I no they do not live there or stay there.
ReplyDeleteI would like to know what you think is the best few agency's working with housing on the North Side?
ReplyDeleteBefore blaming specific individuals for the problems of a neighborhood, find out about them first.
ReplyDeleteFind out about the good they do before you think of them as the devil. Maybe Paul Bertelson bought these houses so they would not be vacant and maybe he is helping people get new starts.
And MAYBE if wishes were horses, then beggars would ride.
ReplyDeleteAnd MAYBE if turnips were watches, I'd wear one at my side.
I lived in one of Paul's properties and it was nice. repairs were taken care of promptly etc.but it was in the "hood"...you can't blame the landlords on the crime its the baby moms, parents etc. letting they're boy friends, friends in. I lived around it all and even the police can't control the crime there. who else can we put on blast? start w/ the renter who let the criminals in and around their kids etc. the renter who lets her boyfriend sell dope out and around her house. The renter who plays innocent but allows this. basically this the hood, you goin' to be blogging 4 ever about it. Landlords gon let in who legally can get in without discrimination, and only folks coming to rent are those who know what it is w/ the Northside! (hood)I knew what to expect, but it is what it is...(better then bieng homeless)
ReplyDeleteAlso owns 3103 James Ave. N. through shell company "Renewal Properties LLC." This property was the subject of a massive police raid a couple days ago.
ReplyDeleteDéjà vu
ReplyDeleteWhat's your excuse this time Paul?
His company owns the home on the 2800 block of Colfax where three children died this morning in a fire.
ReplyDeleteadd 3245 3rd Ave S. if not already added
ReplyDeletenow a few years ago when he first bought this house next to mine i found a video on line of P. Bertleson giving a seminar on how to become a corporate ministry and run tax free legally... i was floored
I am trying to dig it up and repost it
Now it is reported that 5 children died in that fire. It is not clear if three families were in that building (duplex) or two. It is a tragedy and it will be important to determine how the fire started, and if 15 people living in a duplex was proper.
ReplyDeleteHe's on the radar now.....
ReplyDeletePaul Bertelson is a fuck, and he always was a fuck.
ReplyDeleteAnyone who says otherwise has never lived near one of his properties.
IF ANY ONE WOOD LIKE TO LOOK UP PAUL BERTELSON PROPERTIES OR OTHER'S GO TO SEARCH .APPS.CI.MINNEAPOLIS MN.US/ADDRESS PORTAL APP/ .
ReplyDeleteWith the recent events, its sad to see that JNS was raisin the flag on Betelson years ago. I lived on the same block as his property at 3415 17th Ave down in south years ago. That place was a wreck. Place was a shanti, police were perpetually there, and I couldn't believe how many people were living there. Bertelson obviously does the absolute minimum at the very latest to maintain compliance with the city. That property was the mainstay topic at all neighborhood block meetings from the time I moved there to the time I left. After this tragedy, its obvious that we are long past due to break Bertelsons syphon of public dollars for his favela racket.
ReplyDeleteLAST COMMENT TO LOOK UP ADDRES GO DOWN 6 IT MAY NOT BE THE SAME FOR YOU ? AND PAUL BERTELSON GOT MOST OF HIS PROPERY'S FROM AUCTION IF NOT ALL ? BACK WHEN THE BANK'S FUCKED PEOPLE OVER ? AROUND YEAR 2005,VERY TRULY YOUR'S.
ReplyDeleteHAY PAUL BERTELSON I WOOD LIKE TO ASK YOU WHY DID YOU SELL YOUR PROPERTIE AT 312 23RD AVE N FROM MISSION INN MINNESOTA MPLS,MN 55419 TO RENEWAL DEVELOPMENT INC ? OR THE OTHER WAY AROUND FOR ONLY A $1 WHEN IT COME'S UP UNDER YOUR NAME BOUTH WAY'S TAX FUCKER VERY TRULY YOUR'S
ReplyDeleteI love it when a slumlord gets his ass in a bind , to have the deaths of children latched to his business is only the start of his punishment. If you read Dante's inferno it is hard as to where he will land I'm thinking level nine, bolgia six, right up close to Satan,
ReplyDeletehttp://newsroom.bringmethenews.com/2014/02/26/dad-who-lost-kids-in-house-fire-blames-lack-of-heat/
ReplyDeleteYou broke this story 5 years ago and now kids are dead. sad.
And Bertelson isn't even the worst slumlord of the lot! Go through the last five, six years of blog postings and take down the names of all the slumlords I have tried to put "on the radar" of our city officials!
ReplyDeleteMainstream media are all over this story of the lawsuit by a former tenant of that duplex, but I put a link here for the historical record.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.mprnews.org/story/2014/04/30/minneapolis-landlord-lawsuit
Hey, Hawthorne Hawkman, any second thoughts on that comment you made November 1, 2009?
ReplyDeleteI thought paul was nice, but I know a family that moved into one of his properties that has an infestation of roaches and bed bugs...it seems like this sorry SOB is only concerned about the money, and his sorry ass, I am glad this blog is up here. I can't wait till he gets his!
