  1. Is this really anybodys business.

  2. Unfortunately, yes. Do you have other things to say about his life and character?

  5. He was full of life, had a smile that would bighten the cloudiest day, and could always make ya laugh

  6. He's a son, a father, a brother, nephew, and a friend to many....He didn't just go there unwanted-he was invited and with someone who lived there also...

  7. What does his record have to do with anything??? Everyone has up's and downs in life-Does that give someone else the right to take your life?

  8. It is sad that people still try to throw stones even after you walk on to the other side. Does this help his family or is it just to boost Johnny asscrack's ego? Respect is everything, even in death. The whiteman says you must earn his respect but the Native man gives it unconditionally. My dad told me this, but he also added that those who don't have respect or honor will never understand the difference. Johnny Boy, you will never understand... Walk in Peace Drew, and say hello to your Dad for me....

  9. I cannot believe anybody would be so heartless to do this to another man.if ya notice on that there little criminal history thingy you decided to search of this man(which is creepy anyways) there aren't any MURDERS or even violent charges.I understand that the Northside is a rough area...but there are people ALL over with criminal a history. I agree Drew's wasn't perfect, but C'mon people lets work together as Americans are suppose to do and support or fellow citizens-not tear them apart...especially when they just died. SHAME on you Johnny NORPH side! your time will come! Rest in peace Drew...

  10. I agree, the criminal history is relatively minor as far as these things go. And I made a point of making the record about how he was found not guilty on one of the charges, very minor.

If I can get the criminal history of the guy who stabbed him, I'd be very happy to print THAT. Give me a full name, a birthday, maybe a Facebook page. I will print information that is relevant.

What I found was all I was able to dig up. Give me more and I'll print it.

  11. I appreciate knowing is someone murdered in my neighborhood has a criminal record and / or associations with others who are involved in lifestyles that are connected with crime. Why? Because the vast majority of the time, those murdered had associations or involvements that put them at greater risk of such a thing happening. That is something I want to know. Does it mean they deserved to die? Absolutely not. Does it mean that it is still just as sad and heart wrenching to their family. Of course. It is a tragedy nonetheless. But when violent acts occur, others in the neighborhood want to know if they are in danger too. In cases where one learns the victim was living a higher risk lifestyle, then residents can put some context around the situation and diffuse fears of any direct correlation with their own personal safety.

  12. I don't always agree with how John approaches homicides in this manner, but I will defend his actions against those who call it disrespectful.

To the friends and family of Drew Heinkel, you have my deepest sympathy and you are in my thoughts and prayers. My name is Jeff Skrenes and I work and live in the Hawthorne Neighborhood, several blocks south of where this happened.

When we have a homicide, often our community is left wondering what happened and why. It affects even those who did not know the victim or the assailant. One of the ways that John goes about exploring these questions is to take a look at the lives of those involved. He wants to know, and I presume that at least some others do as well, whether the kind of life someone led was a factor in any way. Sometimes this understanding is also crucial in finding the one responsible.

It's hard to present such inquiries in a way that doesn't shy away from what really happened, yet is also seen as respectful of the deceased. It's my sincere hope that by being unafraid to look at the whole picture, we can do a better job of understanding what happened and stop the cycle of violence from repeating itself.

From what information I'm seeing, it looks like the criminal history in this case may not have been as much of a factor (if it was at all) as in other such deaths.

And it's clear that Drew was loved by many, so once again, I am deeply sorry for your loss.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I think Hawthorne Hawkman said things very well.

The first point being is that hearts and prayers are with Drew's loved ones. We (as northsiders) have to be exposed to violence more than average and we, the people I associate with, make it a point to NOT get desenitized - to keep being OUTRAGED at violence in our community. To not let someones life go unnoticed. That is why we gather, why we attend vigils. So everyone, especially the family, knows that we CARE. We are hurting too, we don't want this in our community.

And in regards to asking the hard questions about who died? how did they live? who killed them? etc - It is important to realize that WE OWE IT TO OUR CHILDREN - THE CHILDREN - TO CONSTANTLY REMIND THEM that living risky, dangerously, criminally, or associating with criminals, gang members etc - it is DANGEROUS and it can have deadly consequences. We must make our CHILDREN want to be protective of their own lives.

I think that is an important part about looking at the whole big entire broad picture - even if it's harsh and ugly and feels uncomfortable.

I am praying for Drew, and sending warm thoughts to Misty and Peyton and all the others that loved him so much.

  14. What you don't point out on this blog is that the most recent thing on his criminal record was in 2007. (People tend to look at the record but not the recency). Drew had turned his life around. He was doing great things and was almost finished with his degree. Drew was a great person who never failed to make me laugh.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Good point. What kind of degree was he trying to get? And where?

And I'm still hoping for a name of the alleged assailant so I can look up HIS criminal record. I want to know what happened here. Often I am forced to print information in the order I can get it. I don't even have a NAME for the assailant.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I personally knew Drew and he was a great guy. I went through treatment with him 5 years ago. If you notice, all of his criminal records were from a few years ago. People do change! He was not a violent person. If you feel you must call him a criminal because of his record, then do that. But if you knew drew, you would know he wasn't a bad person

  17. Johny northside you can go ahead and get this off of here. i dont care that you have no life, there is no way im gonna let you pull something like this. 27. Oh, let me get this straight. You're going to tell me what a great guy he was while literally talking about meeting me in a dark alley?

Thanks for providing--in your own special way--insights into the kind of folks who knew this guy.

  28. Hey Friends and Family of Drew - we know you are emotional and sad and angry right now.

But posting threats to John's life or well-being is sort of proving that Drew hung around with the wrong type of people.

Tell us good memories and stories and leave some kind words about Drew. This is the internet and it will be here for infinity.

Send John some nice pictures or something, I'm sure he'll post anything you send. Write out a nice memoir about Drew.

  29. I went back and removed one of my comments for the purpose of being more sensitive. This guy was, after all, a victim.

Here is the portion of that comment which I am going to publish, however:
    ---------------------------------
This stuff won't be leaving here and I really don't see any need to get in contact with you. Whatever you have to say, you can say it here. Drew's death is very unfortunate and sad, but his lifestyle choices are very relevant to how he ended up dead.
    --------------------------------

To that I might add: May be. MAY BE very relevant to how he ended up dead. When somebody ends up killed, an examination of their life and circumstances is in the public interest and, unfortunately, a criminal record is highly relevant.

The comments of friends and family who say he was a good person and was trying, recently, to turn his life around...and was going to school...

    That's relevant, too.

And, again, I would like very much to get the name and hopefully the birthday of the guy who was responsible for the stabbing. I'd be very happy to dig into HIS record, if any.

  30. About 12 years ago, a distant cousin of mine was dating someone and her ex-boyfriend shot him to death over that. If someone were to have publicly posted his criminal record (if he had one; he was a distant cousin I'd met only a few times) I think I'd be pretty worked up about that. The analytical side of me would probably win out about the relevancy of at least asking the question.

That being said, if someone were to even imply that my cousin brought his death upon himself (record or no record), I'd be FURIOUS. I'd be thinking a lot of the same thoughts as were expressed here by friends and family of Drew. I hope I'd have the strength not to ACT on that.

I'm glad to see John removed the comment, and I hope things calm down a bit.

  34. I am truly disgusted by "Johnny Northside." I ask you, are you that bored in your own life that you have to dig up any possible dirt that you can find on someone just to make your self feel better? Drew was my cousin, and though we had not spoken or seen each other in years, he was a phenomenal person. Sure, he may have had some rough spots in his life, but find me someone who hasn't. How someone deals with their ups and downs is what signifies them as a person. Drew Michael chose to turn his "downs" around and changed his life. He chose to better himself. And for you to post this on a blog, proves you to be nothing more than a mere ignorant and heartless asshole. Why do you have to subjectify someone's past life for your own entertainment? What happened in Drew's past was simply that, HIS PAST. It is neither your business nor anyone elses. Just because he took a short stroll down the wrong path does not make him a bad person. If anything, praise him for getting off that path and on the right one. If you look at that record once more you will notice that those offenses were from years ago and were minor. Do not try and tag him as a criminal and say that those offenses are what led him to his death. If you had even an ounce of respect in your pitiful soul you would remove this blog. Respect for yourself. Respect for Drew. Respect for family, friends, and anyone else who has been affected by this horrendous event.

I love you Drew. May you rest in peace.

Krissy, Misty, and Payton, keep your heads up. Do not let this simple, ignorant man try to dent that beautiful image of Drew and the wonderful man we all knew he was.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Tell me the full name and, if possible, the birthday of the guy who stabbed him. If I have offended you, let me assure you I am an equal opportunity offender and would much rather print the criminal record of the perp instead of the victim.

Unfortunately--and it appears even the Star Tribune alluded to this--Drew's tough past fits in very well with the demographic patterns of individuals who end up murdered in Minneapolis, but especially North Minneapolis.

    ReplyDelete
  36. just a simple question...what do the people from the northside of MPLS gain by knowing the criminal history of a murder victim (I beleive it was ruled a homocide)? I understand know the history of the murderer (which I have NO idea what his name is-other than an angry fool) but I guess I don't see any gain from knowing the history of a victim. I understand I am not resident of north mpls but I guess even if it were to happen in my area, I really would not care about the criminal history of the man that lost his life. Is it because they can turn around and talk about the home it happened in? well,)as the previous comment that states) Drew 'broke' into this residence;which I highly doubt was the case, then how would his criminaly history affect the northside residence?? I'm trying to make sense of this. I did not know Drew myself, but I knew of him..and what I knew of him was he was a fun, caring guy that always showed love and respect to his family & friends. I've watched the videos and seen pictures on facebook & had tears rolling down my face..I don't know all of the details of what haopened that night. but I do know, that any human that has it in them to stab another man in the chest-is an angry mofo! I have to tell you that all of the blogs from JNS has really given the 'northside' of Minneapolis a HORRIBLE reputation. I live in the suburbs and only hear things about this area. but these blogs make me believe this is an area that I would NEVER care to even drive through. My heart goes out to Drew's family & Misty. I knew Misty way back when she we were younger. I know her heart is broken in peices. she lost her mother 21 years ago on 2/16 and now her soulmate on 2/13 (her Birthday) the added pain this blog must have caused her is unfair & uncalled for-so could someone please explain the purpose of it. is it to make JNS look like a 'good' citizen??

    ReplyDelete
  37. hmmm...posted a comment on here earlier today. but for some 'odd' reason it never got posted. I love how this 'public' blog can post the crimal background of a murder victim. but the 'administrator' can pick and choose what the 'public' post on here. just for the record...my previous post was not threatening, racist or hurtful to anybody. it was a simple question for the 'northside' and just one more comment...I have a huge suspicion that many of the rude/angry 'ANONYMOUS' reply posts are coming from the same IP address as JNS!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Based upon the title of the blog, your level of sensitivity is a futile attempt at best. I happen to have been privelaged to know Eagle Child and Love and Honor him and his family/friends.This blog reflects the level of judgement and contempt you have for him as an individual and as a beloved person in my community. As a life long NORTHSIDE resident I am ashamed of you and your blatant disrespect of his memory.Furthermore just because you have the right to post his criminal record dosent make it necessary or relevant to who he was as a person. Many of us when treading through life, hit bumps in the road and make poor decisions, those decisions DO NOT MAKE US WHO WE ARE ON THE INSIDE.They are indicative of thought distortions and false beliefs that we are able to change with proper insight, love and respect.Instead of passing judgement and/or posting carpetbagging B.S., Say something with a thread of dignity. I know you will have a response but pls make it worth while. I love you Drew, Rest Easy Brother.

  39. Johnny Northside, if you did give your condolences to family that is fine. What we do is need your condolences to drew's family if you haven't given it already. As far as Drew having a criminal record and posting it, I have no real beef with it. As long as it purtains to putting away this person who did this. I myself grew up in the north side of minneapolis and have a criminal record myself, I am all to familiar about northside living. As I grew up there, yes I am on Drew side. There for my thoughts and condolences go out to all family and friends, in my deepest sympathies towards Drew everyday of my life. I'm am grieved myself heavily. Yes I am a family member and I am an uncle of Drew. I would apprieciate any of your comments Johnny as long as you can bring some kind of helpful justice for Drew. With that I will say goodbye and much love towards family especially TLC.

  40. I am sure that Drew's death is extremey hard for many. You all have my sympathy. But, you can't get mad at John for posting a criminal record, it is relevant to a lot of murders... In this case everything is from a few years ago and minor. John was just giving the public information that he got so we could see the bigger picture of everything.

It is very sad to hear that he was turning his life around. That is why someone needs to come forward with the name of the person responsible for all of this grief.

Please, if you have anything to say about this, talk about the good times with Drew and how great of a guy he was... lets not make this any harder than it already is.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I am deeply sorry your relative is dead. It is all the more awful in that he was apparently trying to turn his life around and had what sounds like a pretty good plan.

I sincerely believe that digging up information is one way to find the clues that will get justice. And I am an "equal opportunity offender." Believe me, if I had the last name of the guy who stabbed him--I hear the first name is Mike?--I'd be all over that.

I don't know how the information connects, I just try to keep putting it out there and that usually helps my neighborhood. People who don't agree, they come here and comment and I almost always publish the comments, including incredibly harsh criticisms of me. I believe that much in free speech and the power of information.

And I assure you that if I had a first name, last name, and hopefully a birthday for the guy who stabbed him, I would be ALL OVER IT.

I'd also like to point out that I don't appreciate commenters on Drew's murder equating the color of my skin with any particular attitudes, which itself is a form of racism. In fact, I am very much into Native American issues as any of my good friends can tell you, and put my time and energy into these issues while I was at the University of North Dakota.

But, hell, your relative is dead and you're pissed. It makes perfect sense to me. I'm more than happy to publish all these comments which are, in effect, tributes to Drew. I really believe in the free flow of information and I never said his relatively minor criminal record made him a bad guy. I was just digging for the truth.

GIVE ME A NAME OF THE GUY WHO DID IT!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Does this name ring a bell to you Mike Lansky or Lynsky or something like that. All I know is that he is a colored guy, that killed my nephew. And I hope the cops and authorities catch this asshole!

  44. this is a message for who ever took Drews life. My name is joe, and my two best friends in this world are Drews little brothers. To the man who killed him, you took the life of a great guy who loved his family and friends. Where ever you hide, where ever you go, you will one day answer for what you have done. I wish it could be me to catch up with you. Every time you close your eyes i hope you see his face. You are a horrible person, and you will burn in hell. Johny northside, you had no business posting anything about Drew. Goodbye Eagle Child, the world is a darker place without the light that you brought into it. I miss you every day and watch your brothers try to cope with there loss, it tears me apart. They all miss you so much, none of our lives will ever be the same. It is an honor to have known you.

    ReplyDelete
  45. To Johnny Northside, you said you would post the "murders" criminal record. But you posted the victims record first, where is the justice in that? What are you proving by putting his criminal record out for the public to see. this young man has a face, a name, and a family. A family that is still grieving and trying to get answers to a life taken too early. Do you feel you are being helpful? I think not. As a father as you are so proud to be and establisg your blog, do you think your 12 year old son, as he becomes an adult and looks back at your record, would be happy to see the hurt and the pain you have caused this one family. How do you justify posting anything on this case without first getting all the facts. You don't even know the other persons name. Yet you want to publize all of Drews history out of context. You are making him the criminal when he is the victim of a violent crime.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I posted the information I had. I'm not going to sit around waiting for information I don't have when I have enough good, useful info to publish, and let the chips fall where they may.

You want me to publish the name and what I can get of the background on the guy who killed Drew? Simple: Give me his name.

In regard to whether Drew was a victim or not, well, Mike Martin of the Fourth Precinct was talking about how it looked like self-defense.

    ReplyDelete
  47. WHO IS MIKE LANSKY?

To Wesley St. Marks-Rehfield. You say the guy who did it was "Mike Lansky" or something like that. Can you be more specific? There are people with this name who can be found on the internet, but that doesn't mean they are the same person...

Also, can you tell me how you know this stuff? More details? That kind of thing?

For the record there is no proof of "Mike Lansky" (whoever he is) being there that night, or anybody named Mike. If you know something and would care to share, please do...

  49. Really,?... those of you who knew Drew knew that he was involved in things much worse than his criminal record shows...things he didnt get caught for, I know as things he did impacted my life and my sons life. Although you say he was getting his life together, really was he? I do feel bad for his family and those who miss him but sometimes a reality check is in order.

  50. For about 19 years I walked the streets of Minneapois looking for tricks and drugs. Hell, I probably turned a trick or shot dope or smoked crack on your porch or in your yard while you were sleeping, or in the bathroom of any business north or south side. I have a criminal record that puts Drew Heinkel's to shame. On July 10,1989 I made a decision to turn my life around. I got sober that day and within a few months I had a new addiction====community service and activism. I was one of the first HIV/STD outreach workers in the Twin Cities area. I went on to become a licensed Alcohol/Drug counselor. I became involved community organizing dealing primarily with issues surrounding poverty, low income housing, and discrimination. My story is not unique as so many of the community activists out there today have the exact/similar tales to tell. At one time or another in our lives each and every one of us has been our own worst nightmare. I commend the warriors in the streets and the varied community organizations. May the Creator/God bless and keep you.

To Johnny Northside: Leave it to the warriors, the REAL PROFESSIONALS, in this City who truly love, understand, and care about people and community. And please remember, THE TRUE WEALT OF ANY INDIVIDUAL LIES IN THE HEART AND SOUL OF THAT INDIVIDUAL, NOT IN THE STUPID DECISIONS AND BAD CHOICES WE HAVE ALL MADE.

I love and miss you Drew. Now peace and serenity for his family and those who love him.

  52. I agree with john. the family of Drew has to understand, Drew's death isn't the only death in MPLS & therefore he can't withhold information on only one person's case. I don't think John is trying to attack or throw arrows at this one particular situation. although, the family and friends of Drew may feel as that is John's purpose of these blogs. hopefully in time, everybody would understand this is what needs to be done to keep the northside residence informed. I believe that this also helps prevent mimimize the rumors/he said she said & to get people to 'talk'. in return if we all think about it...it'll hopefully help with solving the justice or injustice of Drew's killer, which brings up another point. I've seen Johnny ask for the name of the name of the murderer, multiple times & nobody has come off the name, that I have seen. I'm sure SOMEBODY knows the name! I've heard that 'Mike' is possibly under the age of 18.But that is not 100% confirmed info.
I believe many of this comments are coming from people that are not residence of the north side (me included) lets all look at this as if this were going on in our own neighborhood & as if we hadn't known Drew. would we want the info?? I believe that each and every one of us can answer 'yes' to this question.

  57. I am Drews Aunt So what of his criminal history what has that got to do with the circumstances surrounding his death. People make mistakes and like it's always been in America why focus on the NEGATIVE rather than the POSITIVE. Drew was a BEAUTIFUL, GENEROUS, LOVING Young MAN.
