Using a county website offered by an anonymous poster, I managed to find out plenty about the people who owned "416 30th," the house which is the "problem child of the block" and is now apparently in foreclosure.

Pretty incredible, huh? Maybe the City of Minneapolis should go after these folks the way they went after Jon Helgason and Thomas Balko of T.J. Waconia, and the guy who was running Universal Mortgage.
Want to check some properties and names? Here is the link to that website, below.

I didn't have much luck and it didn't seem to be working until I entered the surname "Olateju." Then it lit up like a lucky slot machine.
Oh, if you'd like to do business with these bums, here is their website...something called "Ordained Realty Services." At first one of the names threw me, but then I figured out "Yemi" must be short for "Oluyemisi." Also, "Sunday" is a man's name. So "Sunday" is the fellow on the left, it appears.

I tried to contact them through their website. No reply so far.
That's great putting a 'parental face' on your 'problem child'... keep up the great work!
ReplyDeleteI have no particular interest in this specific story, but in your project in general I am very interested. I am capable of providing some support to your work as I think it is the right thing to do. If your interested, please indicate some way of getting ahold of you.
ReplyDeleteHey, So WCCO has a link to the MinnPost article that is all about what you are up to here in Northside. I got really excited when i was reading about what your doing and thought i would drop you a note. I live off of 29th and 6th, in Hawthorne also. My roommates and I are young white women and we have been here for the last 2-3 years. We stick out like sore thumbs and are frequently asked "what are you doing" . . . I don't mean to babble, it is just nice to know that we are no longer alone in our quest to reach out and change our neighborhood. We would love to have you over sometime and chat about what is going on in Hawthorne. let me know if you are interested.
ReplyDeleteHang in there. If you want to give me your contact information, just use the comments function but write NOT FOR PUBLICATION on the top. I'll take down your info and we'll make contact.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure you know your own block, perimeter, and "exit corridor" better than I do. That info would be valuable to secure your area. I could go over there, do some securing of your block, and blog about it.
In the meantime, do your 311 calling...take down reference numbers...use this blog to write about what happens or doesn't happen so there is a public record. City officials are indeed reading this blog.
If you're not already doing so (and you might be, I don't know) you might also consider taking some steps like...collecting the junk mail from a vacant house next door, slipping a padlock on an unsecured door, planting some flowers where there is nothing but dirt.
We're not alone and we're not weak, either. Putting this stuff on a blog gives us power, particularly when the media start to pick up on the stories. It's time for the decent people to turn the tide against the indecent people.
The city said "adopt these houses." The city isn't breaking my 'nads for boarding up houses wide open to trespass, particularly when I'm calling 311 and keeping them informed every step of the way.
Decent people hesitate to touch somebody else's property, but if the front door is wide open, then the indecent people will get inside and do damage.
I am trying to use the media and this blog to let people know: we must have the confidence to take it upon ourselves to exercise "country boy/girl common sense" and secure houses that are open to trespass, or the situation with those houses will rapidly degrade.
Oh, also...my email is a matter of record. Go to the Minnesota Daily and look up my name, "John Hoff." I'm a columnist. My email is at the bottom of every column.
ReplyDeletePrinting it here will make me "spam bait," but, yeah, that's how you can get in touch with me.
i think there is a story behind "The People Responsible for '416 30th,' The Problem Child of The Block" - If you start digging you just might find a blog about "yemi" who (according to the blog which i linked from a Baptist church notice) ended up, in March, going into a coma... perhaps it's Karma? If it's true my heart and prayers go out to her and her family... but: Sunday Olateju is NOT in a coma. And foreclosure or no foreclosure our community member Sunday still is responsible for the properties that his name is on!
ReplyDeleteGreat MinnPOst article Johnny! Hope the fame brings you more resources to accomplish your goals! I am cheering for you!
ReplyDeleteThanks for throwing a clue my way. Yes, it does indeed appear that "Yemi" is or was in a coma. Here is her "Caring Bridge" website.

It's unfortunate and sad and I hope she does get better. But, really, something as simple as securing a board to a window open to trespass over and over again is something a property owner can take care of, or arrange to have somebody else take care of it, even if they have a lot of things to deal with in their life.
The people who were in the house, stealing electricity over and over again were not trespassers, as near as I can determine, but appeared to be actual RENTERS.
The property at 416 30th Ave. N. has been allowed to fall into a terrible state and has become a haven for all kinds of bad things.
1.) A gas leak that scared the block and required firemen to respond, plus required the gas company to respond.
2.) Blatant electricity theft which has kept Xcel running around in circles.
3.) Piles of garbage which required two trucks and a crew to go in and deal with the mountain of filth...and there's still a big pile in the garage.
I see a cat over there all the time. I'm sure the cat is helping to control the vermin from the trash pile, which seems to be more than Sunday is doing right now.
4.) Lasting fame for the property as "the problem child of the block" due to the video now on Minn Post Dot Com.
If "Sunday and Yemi" want to do right, they should contact the Hawthorne Neighborhood Association and see if there is a way to help that "problem child" property become a viable part of the visionary eco-village project, (through a "short sale" if possible?) instead of seeing it fall into the hands of a slumlord once the mortgage holder puts it on the market for pennies on the dollar.
(Just my idea...I don't speak for the HNA)
I do sympathize with their tragedy. But that only goes so far. Little children could have died in that building while it was wired up to stolen electricity using a mish-mash of cords. Tell me Sunday didn't know people were living inside that building?
I doubt it. I'm sure Sunday knew, but cared more for Mammon, deity of money, than Christian conduct.
All I want to know is how can I get more information about "Yemi and Sunday" to put more psychological pressure on them to do something about "the problem child of the block."
I'm not leveling any criticism at their church.
But if the church knows about it, then the church should have a very serious talk with their "community member" Sunday.
And might I add...Sunday and Yemi is just the beginning. I'll find out who owns the crack houses and I'll parade their personal information on this blog, starting with my block, the four perimeters, the Corridor of Safety, and then expanding my efforts.
Plus the comment function is wide open, subject only to my approval of the comments. Got information on who owns the problem properties?
Put it up here! We are not weak and we are not alone. The internet gives us the power to turn the tide on the North Side.
I doubt that Sunday and Yemi will ever set foot on the 416 30th property...
ReplyDeleteSince it went into foreclosure on 2/26/2008 they obviously haven't been active in dealing with any of the events you've blogged about here... Once a property goes into foreclosure the clock is ticking - Sunday has 6 months to "redeem" the property: this means that between 2/26/2008 and 8/26/2008 he and his comatose wife are still legally responsible for the property including upkeep, utility payments and more. Typically it's a lost cause unless the owner is actively attempting to turn things around. Considering they have a total of 13 properties that are in foreclosure (12 of which were listed foreclosed before the Yemi went into her coma... coincidence?) I seriously doubt they will actively take part in any type of redemption anytime soon.
BUT
Keep up the pressure: you've actually made a nice foothold - this is a great story - maybe someone at the Strib (or MinnPost or NPR) would write a story about Yemi and Sunday... There's a lot of tragedy here but there's a lot of hope here!
One house at a time. One story at a time. -anon
We USED to live next door to one of their properties. After what they put us through, via neglect, bad tenants, etc., I hope they rot in hell.
