In Minnesota, where the Franken/Coleman Senate election recount will drag on for quite some time, I feel OK doing "belated" election coverage.
On Election Night, I was in St. Paul and had to drive around a fender-bender on University, about a block before Hamline Avenue. I noticed a crowd of...
...about 15 Obama supporters yelling and waiving signs near the dark, busy, rain-slicked street, and it wasn't hard to see what probably happened: the impromptu demonstration of support for Obama had created a distraction, and contributed to the fender-bender.
Notably, one of the vehicles in question had an Obama sticker. The two drivers appeared to be working things out, and didn't seem too upset. Yet they were leaving the damaged cars in the traffic lane, like they needed to preserve a murder scene or something. One of my top ten pet peeves.
FENDER BENDERS SHOULD GET OUT OF TRAFFIC. Go work things out in a parking lot and let the rest of civilization (the SMART people who can FREAKING DRIVE) continue forward toward their own lives and important tasks. Hey, when one car has the front crunched in, and one has damage in the back, it doesn't take a brilliant detective to figure out what happened, plus there will be glass and chrome left at the spot, anyway. SO GET THE (EXPLETIVE) OUT OF TRAFFIC!!!!!
Somehow, though, the fender bender seemed to contribute to the mood of festivity and history. Hey, it isn't a party until something gets broken! And it was really nice of the St. Paul police to refrain from firing TEAR GAS and FLASH BANG GRENADES at a few people holding signs, unlike their actions during RNC 2008. (Click for an example)
No, I will NOT be getting over it. I hope when the new Congress comes in, some of these matters get investigated beyond the municipal government whitewash level.
