Micky's Liquor Should Be Ashamed Of Itself...

Photos By John Hoff

So a few days ago, I was at NoMi party at 14th and Emerson Ave. N., to raise money for impoverished people in India, when I had to make a trip on foot to Micky's Liquor to buy some cups for the wine all the partygoers were drinking, while Skyping to India and talking about various socially-responsible issues...

I asked Micky's if they sold plastic cups, and I was asked, "How many?"

That's when I found out they will sell single cups for five cents apiece. How convenient for the chronic inebriate market to have access to five cent liquor cups.

In the top picture, Jules Inda (the lovely spouse of Pat Carney, North Minneapolis marketing guru) poses like Vanna White with the cups I obtained that night. Really, the best thing I did all night at that party, was to buy out Micky's stock of plastic cups for the evening. Anyway...I'm going to say what needs to be said, because if I'll go after Merwin's and their "butt fence" I'm sure not going to hold back from critiquing Micky's Liquor about their "Five Cent Chronic Inebriate Cups."

Plus they have a pay phone in their parking lot, which consists almost entirely of concrete. And let's not forget the old ass sign form the 1970's. Do I have to be the one to say publicly what everybody else is thinking? Micky's should be ashamed of itself, squeezing out nickels from chronic inebriates and leaving our neighborhood to pay the price.

SHAME SHAME SHAME.

  1. And the traffic hazard. The most dangerous place to be is in the westbound lane on Plymouth passing Mickey's when it's a few minutes from closing time. People will turn in front of you on a dime and drunks will jaywalk to get to Mickey's before it shuts up for the night.

  2. it's funny, but i was just talking to someone about how we never notice too much loitering outside mickey's, like there was down the street at snow foods & uncle bill's. to be honest, i've never actually been INSIDE mickey's, since it doesn't really look like a sierra nevada pale ale kind of place, so i don't know what the story is--maybe there is crap going on there, but it's just not out in the parking lot, or maybe there's some other explanation.

  3. What? Am I to understand you want me to drink from the bottle as I drive up and down Lyndale looking for some action? A cup obstructs my view while driving far less than a dark bottle of MD 20/20

  4. lol re traffic! as a bike rider myself, i'll admit that whenever i see men coming out of the mickey's parking lot on a bike with a case of beer on the handlbars, i figure "there goes someone with a dui conviction."

it certainly seems like a DEPRESSING place, but i've never felt menaced walking past that parking lot, the way i did walking along the sidewalk in front of the drug dealers outside snow foods.

  5. Mickey's also sells single cigarillos, for not much. I didn't realize they sold cups too. Now I can drink and roll a spliff.

  6. I worked at Micky's for over 6 years. First of all, for those that comment on what it's like in the store - - don't comment if you have not gone in!! 2nd, just like any other business, they provide what is asked of them. Should it be a cup for a nickel or a single cigar, who is to decide what quatity they sell. Why sell cups only by the roll, if that means they would seldon sell. Micky's has been in business for years and has a very unique history in N. Mpls. Check it out before placing judgement! There seldon is Loitering, or violence, or drug dealing outside it's doors... why??? because Mickys won't allow it. Simple as that. Why do the food stores down the street allow it?? Where are the bloggers ripping them to peices? I personally knew Micky, and miss him dearly. The sign, which you call old, is more than just a sign. It's for rememberence of a man who brought life to north Mpls.

    check it out.

  7. The "holier than thou" factor in the original post and a few responses is astounding.

Sorry, that a business is so busy, that it is a "traffic hazard". Not really the businesses fault for what people do in the street.

Shady activity doesn't happen in the store or the lot because employees shut it down. Panhandlers, people too drunk to speak, and other undesirables are quickly and effectively thrown out.

And chronic inebriates very rarely buy 5 cent cups. They're mostly bought by middle class black folks going to parties, and conveniently, can buy their own cup for a mere 5 cents.

Micky's has been an institution in North Minneapolis for over 60 years, and anyone who knew Micky knows that he wasn't out to take advantage of anyone.
