"Back Fence" Open Thread. Here's to free speech and Lt. Jeff Rugel...

Contributed Photo

My recent "back fence" free speech forum thread was a great success, with more than 20 posts and two pieces of important bloggy breaking news: a company vehicle at the Morgan Ave. N. whorehouse, and the reassignment of Lt. Jeff Rugel.

Since the thread is now long and falling to the bottom of the stack, I've decided to start a new "back fence" thread right here where readers can talk about what they like.

So happy Fourth of July, and happy FREE SPEECH.

  2. 1) It being a long holiday weekend, there's a beehive of construction activity at 2515 3rd Street North. Anybody want to start a betting pool on how far along our "slumlord in training" gets in framing the dozen or so bedroom "addition" to his duplex?

    2) I suggested the other day that we retake the Farview Park hill to watch the fireworks tonight. I got no replies- is this an indication that it's still to dangerous to use our parks on the Northside?

  3. To the first anonymous, the replacement is Lt. Jim Heimerl. For more details, see the post before this one.

To Dyna: I am calling Jeff Skrenes on my cell phone right now. This sounds like a job for the Hawthorne Hawkman.

  4. Looks like the "construction" is a rain out for now, but they may be back later. They've laid sill plates atop the foundation and look to have constructed a long wall to substitute for the usual center beam. None of the lumber they've got on site is long enough to bridge the width of the foundation. Suffice to say, it's definately going to be a "load bearing" wall. Wonder if code allows that? Suffice to say, it insures that the basement will forever be divided into tiny little rooms.

  6. Dyna, I thought Farview Park was a great idea, but I was already committed to another location.

We should make an advance plan for next year, for sure!

Connie and Dyna, I went to the top of Farview and it was the single most spectacular fireworks display I've ever seen. You can watch just about every show in Minneapolis from there. Next year I hope to see you both there.

  9. They are pictures of SOMETHING, but whether I was served or properly served, well, I reserve a rebuttal.

  10. Thanks for the Pic of Lt Rugel.

Bless the men in blue and the work they do. I lived next to one for 10 years, they see the worst of people, and are expected to be the best of people. It's a tough job made easier when the community is involved. I wish him well in his next assignment.

  11. Those pictures of you getting 'served' at your party - they remind me alot of when one of my co-def's and I were served with papers of our own defamation suit - last August - at the first of the Heart of the City cook-outs. A bunch of people around Minneapolis pulled together to organize a community bbq, and I had heard word from a another co-def that I would be getting served with a defamation lawsuit. I received a phone call asking was I Megan and was I at home. I asked the girl if she was a process server and would she like to come meet me at the cook-out. She was and she did.

Eerie similarities! :-) I guess things are predicatable, just not boring!

  12. Lt. Jim Heimerl is the same one who screwed up the Metro Gang Task Force - why would be get him rather than someone who would be as great as Rugel?
