Which would you prefer: these homemade cookies from Megan Goodmundson or a pistol whipping in the dark and dead of night?
A few hours ago, the Star Tribune published a story about two suspects arrested in North Minneapolis after a "pistol whipping" crime spree, click here for the article if the Star Tribune link isn't already dead, which happens ALL THE TIME, and it's quite annoying but, hey, I'm sure dead trees feel even WORSE.
Notably, the Star Tribune published details about the two suspects such as...
...the fact one of the men is from Elk River, plus their ages but DID NOT publish their names.
Why is that? You just have to wonder.
Figuring out their (likely) identies, however, is not difficult by scrutinizing the online Hennepin County jail roster. It appears (likely) one of the men is Antawon Antonio Baker, born 6/9/1984 and having a home address of 607 Twin Ave. N., Elk River, Minnesota. (A more detailed criminal record search may follow)
Baker was booked into the jail today at around 4 in the morning and charged with aggravated robbery. He is held without bail.
The other suspect is (apparently) Lante Edjuan Morris, born 6/7/1981, whose address is 3250 Morgan Ave. N., booked around 4 in the morning and charged with aggravated robbery and criminal possession of a pistol. He is held pending $75,000 bail.
So there you go, and that wasn't so hard, but I have to ask: why does it fall to the blogosphere to provide these details instead of the (paid!) mass media?
More easy-as-pie criminal record searches will likely follow regarding these two clowns.
Oh, excuse me. ALLEGED clowns.

Not a very serious criminal record, as far as these things go. What gets more interesting...really, really interesting...is that searching for Lante Edjuan Morris turns up a guy named Lante Lamar Moore. Normally, you'd just think, well, a similar name turns up in the search, so what?
But it turns out Lante Edjuan Morris has the exact same birthday as Lante Lamar Moore: 6/7/1981.
And this Lante Lamar Moore has a much more serious criminal record, including being charged with premeditated murder.
So for what it's worth...and there's no definitive proof that Lante Edjuan Morris has any relationship to Lante Lamar Moore other than the same exact birthday and a similar sounding name...but heres the rather severe criminal record of Lante Lamar Moore.

Please note: when the jailhouse roster was first published, I am convinced "Antawon" was spelled "Antawan." I know because I copied and pasted right off the website. Subsequently, it appears the spelling has changed and, accordingly, I changed the spelling in the body of my post.
Using the revised spelling for Antawon turned up this criminal record, which did not turn up when the suspect's name was spelled Antawan.
I was working that night, but was not involved in this incident (got a stolen car...). Those coppers that figured this mess together were fantastic... our initial descriptions were terribly vauge and they were able to swarm the area and connect the parts. Real gritty police work. Nice work in a real mess.

Why? Because responsible news outlets do not publish the names of suspects until they have actually been charged with the crime. Sometimes, not often, but sometimes the police get the wrong bad guy. Or there is not enough evidence/proof to charge them.
ReplyDeleteThat way the media can avoid being sued for publishing false/defamatory information.
Also it's just poor journalism to guess or speculate on who a suspect is. Once they have been charged, there is no question.
Getting the facts correct is far more responsible than getting "an exclusive" wrong. As a matter of fact the Editor of the Strib wrote a recent article on just this subject, to explain why they held a story until facts could be verified.
The Star and Tribune will never tell you the whole story especially when it comes to the perpetraters. Your best bet is to get an inside source or sources that are Police Officers. When i say sources i do not mean that they are giving out info that they shouldn't give out, it's the information that is being kept from us because the Tribune panders to these lying broke down fux. John is correct when he says that the Tribune is an enourmous waste of paper that could be better used to sanitize(?) my dooky chute.Good Day.
ReplyDeleteI think Boathead is adding some creative interpretation to my general disapproval of killing trees to make newspapers, but oh well.
ReplyDeleteThe fact is that if the Star Tribune won't print the names of suspects in North Minneapolis crimes, and this blog gets its hands on that information, I will happily publish it and eat the Star Tribune's lunch. In fact, I will publish the names and addresses of the suspects' LANDLORDS.
To Just A Cop:
ReplyDeleteWhat's up with this Morris/Moore coincidence?
Johnny - Thanks for posting this publicly available information. You are simply providing the information that would be available to any of us if we had the time / ambition to find it. If it turns out Moore and Morris are two different people (by some miracle), I'm sure you'll let us know. I take the information here critically, as we should with all published reports. Thanks for all the hard work, and don't let the haters get to you.
ReplyDeleteThere is a difference between publishing accurate suspect information, and guessing the names of the suspects from jailhouse rosters. It's not an "exclusive" if you have the information wrong. That would be considered poor journalism.
ReplyDeleteMaybe you're right, maybe you're wrong. If you're right, good for you. If you're wrong, expect to be trashed in the alternative media.
Oh. I'm shaking. (Sarcasm font)
ReplyDeleteAlso, as of this moment, I don't see any indications the Star Tribune is going to follow up and publish the names of the suspects.
ReplyDeleteCourt appearance for Mr. Morris.
ReplyDelete3/22/2011..09:00
Looks like he'll be cooling his heels in the pokey way past St. Patrick's Day.
Having not been charged in 48 hours, Baker was released. Morris remains in jail under the gun charge, but the aggravated robbery charge did not happen in the first 48 and so he is not being held for THAT.
ReplyDeleteThree days later and we still wait for the Star Tribune to give us more details about this crime spree and publish some names. I'm going to post the original article here for purposes of First Amendment fair comment and criticism, because of an oft-commented upon tendency for Star Tribune links to go dead.

At least two men in a green minivan went on a 45-minute robbery spree early Wednesday in north Minneapolis, taking one victim's purse, pistol-whipping another and chasing a third down a street at gunpoint, police said.
A 26-year-old Elk River man and 29-year-old Minneapolis man were captured minutes after their alleged spree began and were booked into the Hennepin County Jail.
The Minneapolis man was ordered held in lieu of $75,000 bail; he was booked on suspicion of aggravated robbery and possession of a pistol. The Elk River suspect was ordered held without bail on suspicion of aggravated robbery.
According to police: A woman told police the thieves took her purse at gunpoint just before 2 a.m. along West Broadway. Minutes later two men who matched the descriptions she gave were on the 3400 block of Fremont Av. N.
They jumped out of a green minivan and confronted a 20-year-old man on the sidewalk. They stole his cigarettes and pistol-whipped him, sending him to the hospital for cuts to his face, according to a relative.
Fifteen minutes later, a man brandishing a gun jumped out of a green minivan and chased another man down the 800 block of 34th Av. N. He threatened to shoot if the victim didn't follow his commands, police said.
Using victims' descriptions of the men, police found the green minivan and arrested the pair inside.

Officers responded to the above address on the report of a robbery of persons at gunpoint. V1/female, 49 yrs, & V2/male, 31 yrs, were just getting into a vehicle when V1 observed a green van pull up & an unknown male exited the driver’s side & approached V2. V1 thought it was to converse with V2, but then observed the male put a gun to V2’s head. At this time, V1 exited the vehicle & dropped her purse as she attempted to run from the scene. V1 felt the male grab her by the jacket & she pulled herself out of it. The male took V1’s purse & left in the green van. Officers left the scene & were later informed of another robbery of person at gunpoint. Other officers stopped a green van containing AP1/male, 26 yrs, who matched the description given by V1 in the earlier incident. V1 was brought to AP1’s location & he was positively ID’d as the male who robbed her. AP1 was booked in HCJ. See related cases below—CCN #’s 10-384493 & 10-384501.
