Don Samuels' Video Update - Dealing With Problem Properties and Disturbances

Today is the thirty-something anniversary of Don Samuel's thirtieth birthday! Happy Birthday Don!

The esteemed council member stated on facebook that all he wants for his birthday is for you to watch his latest video update. This week's topic is how to deal with problem properties and disturbances from your neighbors.

So help make Don's birthday wish come true and take a few minutes to watch and perhaps you might learn something new.

  1. The video is cut off on the right because this particular blogger template is too narrow.

Another tip from me, a frequent 9-1-1 caller: To help ease my mind that I am not taking away emergency resources from an actual emergency, the first thing I say to the operator when I am calling about a non-emergency is "I'm calling about a non-emergency" - then they usually say go ahead or every once in a while ask me to hold if they are swamped.

I consider loitering, prostitution, drug dealing, boom-car/yard/house etc to be none emergencies.

    Happy 9-1-1ing!

  2. Actually prostitution is an emergency as it can kill via aids or other issues. So please do not call prostitution a non-emergency.

  3. @Anony. 8:55 PM.

On the North Mpls. "emergency crime-continuum", prostitution ranks pretty low in my opinion. There are bigger fish to fry with regard to emergency 911 service in N. Mpls. I'm not discounting the fact that prostitution is not a problem, nor am I saying that the police shouldn't deal with it. All I'm saying is that when bullets are flying I'm not too worried about some dude dipping their pen in another dude's (taint)ed ink. I agree with NoMi Passenger, it's a non-emergency and should be dealt with accordingly.

  4. Prostitution is a very real problem over North. But not a lot that the coppers can do about it... in all honesty. In order to get a conviction (or even remotely presentable to the Court) you need a "deal" - meaning an audio or video of the "transaction". Just because a cop stops a car with a 'burbanite and a known prostitute is not enough for the court system.

All we can really do is harass them until they move on... don't blame us... the system has made it tough for us to actually enforce.
    -just a cop

  5. We are fortunate to have this man as our 5th Ward Counciman. He is a distinguished man with a level of caring that would be hard to match. The catch-22 is that if he runs for mayor, we lose him as the unique,A-one leader of our community with the silver lining being that Minneapolis,as a whole ,would tremendously benefit. That means i predict he would win in a cakewalk. In a perfect world of nothing but Boats, Don would be the Admiral of the Navy. Float, Float on Don. In honor of The Floaters, have a musical day.

  6. While murders, drug dealing, and prostitution all merit "911" attention, it's the day to day problem property issues such as loud parties, domestic fights, liter, vandalism, and boom-cars that lead to the degradation of our neighborhoods.

These lifestyles lead to the criminal behaviors that are "911" emergencies but also greatly impact the quality of life that attracts valued homesteaders to our communities.

It is obvious by the feedback that everyone knows the police do not waist their time with non-violent offenses.

Additional enforcement and prosecution of problem property violations needs to be spearheaded by our City Council representatives and I am a bit disappointed that Mr. Samuels does not address his role in this process.

  7. If you believe there are others crimes to be taken more seriously I agree. How about the city council constantly passing illegal rules thoughout the city costing us millions. Need I remind you of those cameras that ticketed cars (not people) for going through red lights? How about spending all sorts of money on stadiums? How about them trying to force property and sales tax free nonprofit (secretly for profit)landlord groups onto our community who don't have to follow all the city ordinances nor pay all the fees we the people do? How about them cutting our police force down? How about them having 2 assistants EACH instead of several more police officers? How about them not cutting their ultra pay checks? I think those are things to tackle that we can speak out on to change locally. Work hard everyone to verify what I say. When you find it's true, attend the meetings and seeing how much truth you end up getting from these council members!

  8. There is a difference between reporting an actual issue and harassing others. 9-1-1ing every loud car that goes by seems frivolous and wasteful.

  9. Let the gentrification begin. As homes are repaired with insurance money the poor will be pushed out of NOMI.

  10. How does that "gentrification" statement even make any sense? Insurance is only going to make the home what it was before the storm. It's not going to turn a little bungalow into a mansion.

  11. Here's what is going to happen. Many homes in NOMI are owned outright. Therefore you are going to see many owners keeping the cash and dumping the lot. Investors will also decline to repair the home and banks on properties with mortgages yet with payees behind on payments will keep insurance monies and let the property be demo'd and become a vacant lot. Any remaining housing stock becomes much more expensive, rents rise and the neighborhood improves. Whites move in and trendy businesses move in and once again the poor are pushed along. Save this post so we can compare in 18 months.

  12. do i sense that certain people are afraid that they will not get stuff handed to them for free anymore? Do these same people think that all black people are painted by the same brush? mr. allen and edwards do. and that is so they can continue to rip them off and claim racism in the same breath

  13. This I will share with you all. There is a lot of drug sell/buying on the block that is located between Aldrich and Bryant between 29th and 30th. Police have been notified and we need to get rid of the illegal activity. The drug house is located either on Aldrich or Bryant. We will find it and shut it down.

  14. The knukleheads are back at 29th and Aldrich North selling their poison. Again, the police have been notified with full description of buyer and seller.
