More Details, Criminal Record Of Wesley "The Child" Gubbin, Who Dumped His Oh-So-Distinctive Hit-And-Run Vehicle In North Minneapolis...

Stock photo, Afghanistan, blog post by John Hoff

In my previous blog post, I was able to find the online court record of Wesley Gubbin; who attempted to dump his vehicle in North Minneapolis after fatally running down an older gentleman on a bike.

However, I wasn't able to flesh out the story of what happened with each charge because, well, the online records just weren't pulling up. Today the internet gods are smiling on me in Afghanistan and so I was able to get the rest of the pertinent info...

Here are those old cases, AGAIN, this time with the resolution of each included:

ASSAULT SECOND DEGREE
ASSAULT SECOND DEGREE

This was a juvenile case back in 2001. Result was "care, custody, control" returned to parents, and C ("child") to have no contact with victim(s).

The following note was made on the case:

CHILD CAME IN ON TWO CHARGES FOR ASSAULT 2ND DEGREE. PARENTS TEND TO THINK THAT CHILD IS NOT A FLIGHT RISK AND REQUEST. THE LESS RESTRICTIVE ALTERNATIVE. CHILD DENY ALLEGATIONS AND CONTINUE FOR PRE-TRIAL.

Wesley Gubbin, a/k/a "The Child," was "adjudicated delinquent" on one of the assault charges, the other was dismissed.

This OTHER really amazing note was made on the case:

"PURSUANT TO NEGOTIATION, CASE #J3-01-065852 (REVOKED PLATES AND NO PROOF OF INSURANCE) WAS DISMISSED, COUNT 2 OF CASE # J4-01-063589 (2ND DEGREE ASSAULT) WAS DISMISSED AND CHILD ADMITTED COUNT 1 OF CASE #J4-01-063589 (2ND DEGREE ASSAULT)IN THAT ON 8-21-01 IN NORTHEAST, MINNEPOLIS, HENNEPIN COUNTY CHILD CHASED A CAR CONTAINING 2 GIRLS AND HIT THE CAR DELIBE..."

I assume that truncated word is "deliberately." And so began the criminal career of the bad seed Wesley Gubbin. He was placed on probation, made to perform unpaid service to the community, had to write a letter of apology to the victim, and had to pay restitution.

AID/ABET BURGLARY-3RD DEGREE
TRESPASSING

Three years later, The Child was up to his old tricks, and this time got convicted in a grown up court of law for trespassing. However, an "aid and abet third degree burglary" charge (which was a felony) got dismissed. Since Wesley actually pleaded guilty on the one charge, it's easy to see this was probably a plea bargain.

Whatever the heck this was, it seems to be some kind of moving violation. He pled guilty and was fined $100, plus a surcharge of $60 and costs of $10. The case file was "destroyed per retention schedule." I bet it would have been useful to the prosecutor who will handle this hit and run, but oh well.

NO MN DL M

I want to make a leap hear and supposed "NO MN DL M" stands for "no Minnesota drivers license, motorcycle." It seems reasonable, since the very next thing he was charged with involved a motorcyle. In any case, it was another moving violation, Gubbin pleaded guilty, and he was sentenced to 90 days, which seems to have been stayed, one year of unsupervised probation, a $1000 fine ($700 of it stayed, sweet!) and the usual $70 of surcharges and costs.

I tell you, those surcharges add up like video late fees.

One sees a pattern forming, here, and part of the pattern was Wesley messed up again and again but the system never came down very hard.

Off-highway motorcycle-Operate on a a public highway

This happened in Mille Lacs county. Real country boy stuff: taking a vehicle meant for "off highway" use on a public roadway. There was a mere $50 fine, but Gubbin also paid a criminal surcharge and law library fee. Notably, he paid a bench warrant charge of $50...which appears to mean he didn't bother to show up at one point.

Now comes the inevitable demon weed. One suspects weed was a big part of Wesley's life since the first juvenile incident, and this was simply the first time he got popped. He pleaded guilty, paid a fine big enough to purchase five dime bags, and then got reamed, as usual, on the criminal surcharge and law library fee.

Wesley initially pleaded not guilty, then changed his plea. One count was dismissed, however.

The pattern is clear. Long ago Wesley learned to plea bargain and to trade a guilty plea on something for a break on punishment.

ONCE AGAIN, he initially pleaded not guilty, then changed it to guilty. ONCE AGAIN, a slap on the wrist: A mere $100 fine plus "video late fees."

Wesley Gubbin has been gaming the system his whole adult life, and a little prior to his adult life. This guy needs to go to prison for a while where he can think very hard for a very long time.

The fact he turned himself in is part of a pattern, much too lengthy, of trading systemic cooperation for light sentences.

  1. I think he was actually from the northside, not just dumping his vehicle there.

There is a Wesley Mckeown Gubbin on facebook who lists North High class of 2002 on his public page.

  2. I just wanted to thank you for your hard work digging this information up. I was a witness and the event had a big impact on me. The driver displayed a remarkable disregard for human life, he was driving like a manic and actually accelerated after plowing down this poor old man.

  3. I was a friend of Wesley's as a child. I can attest that the address in the prior post is accurate and that he, nonetheless, attended North (magnets and all in MPLS).

  4. I'm glad there's a forum for this discussion.

So, OK, he's FROM North Minneapolis. He still picked this place to dump his vehicle when, in fact, he lives in Northeast.

Does that make him better or WORSE in terms of his regard for our neighborhood? Of course, the feelings of anybody in this neighborhood or that neighborhood were clearly the last things on his mind.

  5. Also, he appears to have two middle names, Frances and McKeown.

Yeah, if I had to choose between one or the other, I'd also go with "McKeown" whenever possible. And then I'd compensate for "Frances" by driving a truck with ugly homemade camouflage.

  6. To clear up my prior comment, that listed address is where he grew up (his Ma's house). I don't know if he still lived there. I ain't seen the man in five years (he worked at a Mr. Tire on Central and Broadway in NE).

  7. Any idea what happened with this case??? Have not heard SQUAT on the news, I am assuming he is still a free man?

  8. Just checked online- not on the Hennepin County jail roster.

Can't find any record of any open case for Wesley Gubbin. What was the case#?

  9. Wesley lived in Northeast Minneapolis. He went to North high school. I hung out with him when I was younger. He did a lot of stupid stuff and never cared who he hurt. It was all a game to him. He needs to be put away for life! He will never change!

  11. I had an encounter in NE with wesley before the hit & run. he harassed me while riding in his wanna-be army truck (the original hit&run truck he dumped ion the Northside) while i was riding my bike. I have spotted him since the hit & run. he seems be be holding down a job at Lightworks: 404 Washington Ave N # 100 Minneapolis. I am wondering why he isn't in jail...seems to have once again dodged the system. SHAMEFUL.

  12. This serves as a good reminder that I need to do an update to this story.

  13. He plead guilty today.....will be sentenced in September. I was a witness, and think about this almost everyday. A horrible horrible memory to have.

  14. Hey anonymous. I was one of the cops at the scene. Just want to thank you for being a great witness for this case. We were ready for trial but he opted out. He knew better.

  15. This happened on Nov 12, 2011. Two days earlier on Nov 10, my wife and I were driving north bound on the same West River Parkway near the falls when this idiot raced around us and past two additional cars then disappeared around a distant bend in the road. This puke was out of control. Speeding around in an unmistakable truck like that, what an idiot.

  19. Anyone who kills a human with a motor vehicle and then RUNS AWAY from the scene of the CRIME is a PIECE OF SHIT.

WESLEY GUBBIN IS A SELF ADMITTED PIECE OF SHIT.

Hopefully he remakes himself and learns how not to be a PIECE OF SHIT while serving his PRISON SENTENCE for the DEATH OF James Malloy.

You trolls who post this crap (Sept 3, 11:36PM; Sept 25, 1:00AM; Nov 4, 10:36 AM) are pieces of shit too.
