The first news I'm hearing of some kind of major fire in North Minneapolis came from a post by Collier White on the North Talk FB Page, as follows.

Last night as I drove through Northeast, the river by Lowry was covered with smoke at around 2:45 am. The smoke was thick enough on Marshall to affect visibility. I picked up a client, a bartender at Suzy's and he said they had watched a fire at a Hawthorne recycling plant for about two hours. Thick smoke was still billowing out into the night sky. No word of it at StarTribune or WCCO this morning.

We need to follow up on this, on the high likelihood that it's from Northern Metal.
This blog has no further details at the moment, but sure wanted to break the information ahead of STrib and the local television stations.
Unconfirmed that it's Northern Metal.
This is the current status, as discussed on North Talk FB page.

Heading to a meeting about Northern Metal right now, and will keep people informed of what I find out.

Not a whole lot of new info yet. We're checking with the Fire Department to see if they were called. We're also going to look into the possibility that Norther Metal would want to avoid calling it in. If they contained the fire without outside help, we'll have to check and see what kind of self-reporting is required under their permit rules.
Update on the current status.

So I just got off the phone with the MFD. There was an industrial fire on Kasota Avenue, which is southeast of the area. That's what they have on file as being reported. But Kasota is a few miles away. (5 miles on Google Maps, 3-4 as the crow files, assuming inhaling pollutants hasn't killed it) Collier White, do you think it seems reasonable that the smoke could have come from there? Again, it would be in Northern Metal's interest to NOT report this, so I don't consider the case closed yet by any means.

ReplyDeleteI passed along my "smoke hugged the cold river and moved along that way" theory to Jeff.
