The criminal complaint doesn't say so but strongly implies Derek Angelo Burgess, DOB 2/15/89, isn't the sharpest tool in the shed. Click here for the criminal complaint and judge for yourself.
On June 9, police responded to a report of a man with a gun at 301 24th Ave. N., a property owned by Proton Investments, Inc. Their less-than-stellar property management is a recurring theme here at Johnny Northside Dot Com.
According to the criminal complaint, Derek Burgess (who also goes by Derek Angelo Cobbin) came walking out of the residence when his seven months pregnant baby mama arrived with her own mother and sister. The pregnant woman had just been to the doctor. Derek walked up to the three women, pointed a gun at them, and announced, "I'm going to shoot a motherf***er today."
Why Derek felt that way is...
...a little mystery of the criminal complaint. It's simply not explained.
However, according to the complaint "Victim 1" (the baby mama) has been living with Burgess four years. On June 7 and 8, he hit her so hard she was rendered unconscious. The victim went to the hospital by ambulance.
So it was the next day (June 9) when Victim 1 went to the residence along with her mother and sister to "get some things and make sure it was locked up." The sister had her own four-year-old daughter along, too. Derek came out of the house (allegedly) and brandished a pistol at the three adult women and made his mysterious announcement.
The pistol was described by a witness "sleeping in the house" as a rusty black handgun. No word on whether it was "janky," a recurring theme here at Johnny Northside Dot Com.
Victim 1, the baby mama, signed a consent form and officers searched the house. They located an old Smith and Wesson .38 caliber revolver. The gun was hidden "under the stairs going to the basement, tucked in a ball of white fabric."
Burgess has a conviction from a second degree drug sale in 2008 and is ineligible to possess firearms. He remains in jail and is charged with three counts of assault and being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm.
The criminal complaint doesn't mention why police weren't summoned when the victim was beaten unconscious on June 7, on June 8, or when she arrived at the hospital by ambulance. Apparently she endured this recurring violence until the point where Burgess involved a firearm.
Allegedly.
Addendum, 10:28 PM. The criminal complaint contains a typo with the defendant's reported address, but all other info including where the incident took place has now been confirmed to be accurate as originally reported in this blog post.

2301 24th N. is an empty lot.
ReplyDeleteWord I have from the prosecutor's office is they are working to get me an answer on the address situation and whether one of the addresses is a typo. I will update this blog post when I get that info.
ReplyDelete2801 Emerson avenue North is where this little bitch Used to live along with spending his nights loitering on 7TH AND NICOLLET with other warrant absconding black and white males and females who like to sit down there and harass people and sell drugs.
ReplyDeleteYou should post about that corner since alot of North Minneapolis is downtown, stay the hell out of St. Paul's business otherwise.
