Northeast residents near 2419 Washington St. NE seem kind of surprised a murder took place in their neighborhood. I think editors at Fox 9 were surprised, too, when they realized the shooting happened in NorthEAST and not in, well, True North.
In fact, I'm pretty sure when the article was originally published, the headline said "North Minneapolis" instead of "Northeast." That's revealed by the URL of the article, which the internet magically creates when an article is first published but which stays unchanged even when a headline is edited:
http://www.myfoxtwincities.com/story/22479899/man-gunned-down-in-car-outside-north-minneapolis-party
Compare the URL to the headline now appearing on the article:
Man gunned down in car outside northeast Minneapolis party
See what I mean? An assumption based on a stereotype was involved when the article was first published. The article said "North Minneapolis" and not "Northeast Minneapolis." Which was why it turned up in my Google search for "North Minneapolis."
But I'm glad it did. Because I managed to find out some rather interesting facts to share...
Engaging in the usual, frustrating practice of mainstream media, Fox 9 says the article happened on the 2400 block of Washington St. NE. But then "B roll" camera footage of the duplex in question reveals the residence is 2417 and 2419 Washington St. NE.
A simple property search reveals the owner.
Minneapolis Public Housing Authority.
Wow, to think that residents of that property were having a party at FOUR IN THE FREAKING MORNING. And then some (likely) no account was shot sitting in a car in front of the property.
Johnny Northside is shocked, appalled, surprised and amazed.

I look forward to the name of the shooting victim being released. Dollars to doughnuts this guy was the sort of thug life lowlife who, on a different day, was just as likely to be the SHOOTER.
Could it be that crime in North is already being driven out of the neighborhood because police are getting out of their cars and walking a beat?
That's my crackpot theory and I'm sticking to it.
(ADDENDUM, JUNE 3: Despite my earlier confidence the victim would turn out to be some kind of lowlife, I have to admit that a preliminary search of police records at this point reveals ONLY traffic citations. Here is a recent article from CBS Minnesota, click here, identifying the victim)

For those of us who do not live in Minnespolis......the presumption has been that North is on the west side of the river and NE is on the east.
ReplyDeleteHere's an interesting line from a news source that describes the party.
ReplyDelete--------------
Witnesses tell KSTP there were about 100 people in the basement, and the music was so loud they didn't hear any gunshots.

Here is a link to the video news story talking about the party, music in the basement so loud nobody heard the shots outside but neighbors did; some of the neighbors had young children.

Authorities have released the name of the man killed during a shooting this weekend in Northeast Minneapolis.
ReplyDeleteThe Hennepin County Medical Examiner said the victim is 25-year-old Mohamed Omar Aden.
Our local Fox News brown boots telling their own version of the incident and the all too telling use of the monstrous NOMI moniker to add to their reality of "all scare-no substance" and fuck the facts.
ReplyDeletesomalians will rule northeast eventually...as soon as the other ten million come to our WELFARE STATE
ReplyDeleteI just learned about this death from my daughter, a long-time friend of the victim. I'm very sad, as this was a young man who I helped raise through his high school years. He was a "big brother" & frequent babysitter to my younger children while living with us. Although he was a Somalian refugee he loved America & was eager to learn about our cultures & traditions. A particularly fond memory I have is from Easter 2007. He saw me filling plastic Easter eggs to hide & wanted to learn all about our Christian holiday which I gladly shared with him. He got his first taste of marshmallow Peeps that night & giggled like a 5 yr old as he ate it. He begged me to let him fill & hide the eggs, then stayed up ALL night, too excited about watching the little ones hunt for them to sleep. When the sun came up he couldn't wait any longer so he woke them up & got a huge kick out of helping them search... I'll never forget how delighted he was to be included that day.
ReplyDeleteAnother time my daughter got chicken pox & we asked if he'd had them before (to avoid exposure). He said "what kind of chicken is that?" & when we burst out laughing he looked confused & said "I mean what kind of seasoning is on the chicken?" Lol! I have so many great memories of this kind, respectful young man & really want to find out more about his murder. He loved playing soccer which helped keep him out of trouble & was so proud to have 3 young babies - who sadly will never know his loving spirit or exuberance for life.
Rest in peace Mo... I will never forget your big glow-in-the-dark smile or all the things you shared with my family about your culture that otherwise we never would've known. steele91
