Demiteras Al Cooper, DOB 4/11/76, a resident of 822 Thomas
Ave. N., was arrested today and jailed at approximately 3:42 PM on a probable cause charge of murder by the Minneapolis Police Department. Given the fact there was a murder today on the 2000 block of Hillside Ave. N., it's likely this arrest involves THAT, though it could just be an incredible coincidence.
Incredibly, nothing turns up in MNCIS or even Google for a "Demiteras Al Cooper," leaving this blogger to wonder if it's a fake name or a spelling error. (ADDENDUM, FEBRUARY 21, either there was a fluke in MNCIS last night or something was wrong with the initial search. Turns out the guy has a long record. See next blog post)

Jury finds for cops in alleged brutality case
ReplyDeleteTwo police officers used reasonable force in a traffic stop in February 2005 and aren't liable for injuries to 31-year-old Demiteras Cooper, a jury decided Friday.
A Hennepin County District Court jury agreed within a couple of hours that officers William Woodis and Clinton Letch behaved reasonably.
In his closing argument, Assistant Minneapolis Attorney Tim Skarda said Cooper had numerous mental and physical health problems before the incident and his injuries weren't consistent with the repeated kicks and stomps he alleged. The officers acted reasonably throughout the traffic stop, he said.
Cooper, who claims to have suffered cracked teeth and facial abrasions, blamed the verdict on the fact that all but one of the eight jurors was white. "I didn't have a jury of my peers," he said. A county arbitration panel had awarded Cooper $25,000, but he took it to trial, seeking unspecified damages.

ReplyDeleteSo it's ANOTHER case of where if he'd been sentenced in 2011 to the five years he's supposed to have gotten for being a "prohibited person in possession", this murder wouldn't have happened. It's time to spotlight the judges and prosecutors. It's also time to increase the mandatory minimums for this crime. Where are NoMi's legislators? Why aren't they pushing for mandatory minimums on this?
