Being the amazing, true-to-life adventures and (very likely) misadventures of a writer who seeks to take his education, activism and seemingly boundless energy to North Minneapolis, (NoMi) to help with a process of turning a rapidly revitalizing neighborhood into something approaching Urban Utopia. JNS Calls for Compostable Cheetos Wrappers!
Post and photos by the Hawthorne Hawkman.
In anticipation of another round of trees in the Hawthorne EcoVillage Tree Nursery, I went and cleaned almost forty of the pots where the trees will go. This blog has repeatedly called for police tape to be made from biodegradable corn starch polymer. We've also celebrated the fact that cups, plates, and utensils at EcoVillage gatherings are made from compostable materials.
But the mulch and moist dirt that accumulated over the winter and spring in the tree nursery pots seems to be the natural habitat for earthworms, beetles, and 99-cent Cheetos wrappers. So, why can't we make those biodegradable as well? It's not like those things have much of a shelf life. Think of how much cleaner our neighborhood would be if the Cheetos wrappers just kind of...went away. And if we can get THAT changed, then next up: Honey Buns.
Sun Chips now come in a biodegradable bag, so why can't we start doing this for other things?
ReplyDeleteOf course, I was totally a fan of Captain Planet and the Planeteers back in the '80s, so I've always wondered why things don't come in biodegradable containers.
Does the Hawkman really wear gloves with pretty little flowers on them?
ReplyDeleteLOL. just teasin' ya.
What's actually kind of depressing is that people are eating so much of this garbage. It really does make it harder to stay healthy, and to keep in a good frame of mind. I think we all know how cranky and uncomfortable we feel after eating junk food--how can we expect our kids to eat this stuff all day and not have it affect the way they feel, and the way they relate to the world.
ReplyDeleteI only wear the dainty gloves to make the slumlords feel EVEN MORE emasculated when I smack them down.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous 9:02s concerned about getting shot for his bag of cheetos becuause he knows he eats junk food too!
ReplyDeleteCheetos should be banned in North Minneapolis until its wrapping is biodegradable. We are not going to grow our green economy by not taking bold action.
ReplyDeleteI can tell you my parents raised me that if i wanted something sweet i should eat an apple. I'm thin and very healthy thanks to my parents. So i think it does start at home....
ReplyDeleteHawkman... LOVE the gloves, did you barrow them from Valeria or did you bring you own? ;)
Hey Hawkman,
ReplyDeleteDont forget to sprinkle baby powder on your hand bofore you slap those hoes.

It would be nice if only biodegradable food containers could be sold in NoMi, or at least in the EcoVillage.
