Anthony Lovell Magnan, whose death was reported on by JNS blog guest author Jordan North, click here for that story, was an outstanding example of a the Biblical principle "He who lives by the sword, by that same sword, he shall die."
Normally, I'd be writing a headline about the "latest shooting victim" and his routine, much-to-be-expected criminal record, but the long predicted "long hot summer" of 2014 has kicked off exactly as North Minneapolis residents predicted repeatedly and emphatically while pleading for...
...more police. Dead before I can write about Magnan is one Steve Martin, whose identity was first reported on JNS blog by--once again--guest author Jordan North, click here.
Magnan, born in 1990 (I have a pair of Army sweatpants that will outlive him!) was convicted of his first crime in 2008 when he would have been, gee, 18 years old, right? Though no juvenile record is to be found online, it's hard to believe...
...he simply turned to crime at 18 after a spotless childhood and early teenage years. So here, before it disappears from MNCIS in the wake of his early death, is Magnan's rap sheet, as follows:
27-CR-08-53962 MAGNAN, ANTHONY LOVELL 04/09/1990 10/27/2008 Hennepin Criminal/Traffic/Petty Downtown Anderson, Jamie L. Crim/Traf Mandatory Under Court Jurisdiction Damage to Property-3rd Deg-Reduce Value $501-$1000
Pled guilty. Had a year sentence hanging over him, but served only 30 days of it. Got probation. Warrant was issued. Later another warrant was issued. Oh, wait, yet another warrant. Honestly, I'm losing count and the print is really small as I find even MORE warrants.
Suffice to say there were a handful of warrants issued over failure to appear, repeatedly. Every time I look, it seems like there's another (Honorable) judge handling the case on the electronic docket, about half a dozen. The man's docket for this one case looks like a yearbook which was passed around and autographed.
Which makes sense. He was about the age of a high school senior. Did he even GRADUATE from high school?

Pled guilty. Credit for 30 days served. Let's count up the warrants issued again, shall we?
One. Two. THREE.
The answer is THREE.
* 86-CR-10-8030 MAGNAN, ANTHONY LOVELL 04/09/1990 12/27/2010 Wright Crim/Traf Mandatory Under Court Jurisdiction Drugs - 5th Degree - Possess Schedule 1,2,3,4 - Not Small Amount Marijuana Not applicable - GOC Traffic-Drivers License-Driving After Suspension
He got the drug charged thrown out, pled to the other charge. Served 20 days. Died still owing $75 on this charge. Only ONE warrant issued THIS time.
* 27-CR-12-38078 MAGNAN, ANTHONY LOVELL 04/09/1990 11/16/2012 Hennepin Criminal/Traffic/Petty Downtown Alexander, Pamela G. Crim/Traf Mandatory Under Court Jurisdiction Fleeing a Peace Officer Not applicable - GOC
Served 60 days. His probation would have ended in 2016, but he didn't live as long as that. Just one warrant issued on this case.
* 27-CR-12-39761 MAGNAN, ANTHONY LOVELL 04/09/1990 12/04/2012 Hennepin Criminal/Traffic/Petty Downtown Alexander, Pamela G. Crim/Traf Mandatory Under Court Jurisdiction Drug Possession-3rd Degree Not applicable - GOC
Served 180 days in the workhouse, had a 27 month sentence hanging over him which was stayed.
Ironically, most likely Anthony Lovell Magnan would still be alive if he'd gone to prison. Now he's just another predictable North Minneapolis statistic.

johnny on the spot...I love your ass(not your ass) man...keep on keepin' on
ReplyDeleteYes he did graduate from high school despite the inadequate public school system in north mpls.
ReplyDeleteMajority of the people dying to this violence are known to each other its very little stranger crimes happening.I am not sure why u are spending so much time pulling up dirt on dead victims when the families are already in extreme pain.
ReplyDeleteYes he did graduate in fact he has a high school diploma and was very intelligent but like yourself "Johnny northside" and everyone else he was not perfect although he wasn't a angel HIS GOOD OUTWEIGHED HIS BAD so instead of trying to assassinated his character why don't you mention the positive things he accomplished and dis
ReplyDeleteYes he did graduate in fact with a high school diploma he was very intelligent but just like yourself " Johnny northside" he was not perfect or an angel but HIS GOOD OUTWEIGHED HIS BAD so instead of assassinating his character why don't u recognize the positive things & his accomplishments
ReplyDeleteIf there are some "positive accomplishments" you want to talk about, feel free to comment. I'm not really finding any evidence of "positive accomplishments" on Facebook. The man was a criminal and died as we can expect criminals to die.
ReplyDeleteTrust me, pulling up "dirt" isn't THAT hard and doesn't require THAT much time. As for the point of it, the only way to prevent shootings is to examine why they happen. And that involves an honest and frank assessment of the lives of both the victim and the shooter. When the shooter is known, I'll be examining THEIR life, too.
ReplyDeleteMy son who I have lost was not perfect but he was not perfect but he had a good heart and was loved by many. My son was not at all into social media and the many small but good things he has done and accomplished would not have received media attention. What is the purpose of dragging dead loved ones through the dirt. What are you doing in the community to change this cycle of violence?
ReplyDeleteSo you have examined the causes of many shootings.you should now have the info needed to create an action plan. Please let us all know so we can be part of the solution!
ReplyDeleteI have a three part action plan as follows:
ReplyDeleteCameras. Cameras. Cameras.
You are evil to the core and care nothing about this community i was hoping u really hAd ideas and plans that we including myself could participate in.
DeleteHow would your life be different if…You stopped making negative judgmental assumptions about people you encounter? Let today be the day…You look for the good in everyone you meet and respect their journey. If someone isn't what others want them to be, the others become angry. Everyone seems to have a clear idea of how other people should lead their lives, but none about his or her own.
ReplyDeleteAnon @ 2:01, you're his mother? Tell me what you did to prevent your son from becoming the thug that he was. What have you ever done in the community to stop the cycle of violence? Do you have a job? Have you ever had a job? Did you model how a responsible adult takes care of his/her family, or are you a welfare queen with multiple children by multiple baby-daddies? My guess is you fall into the latter group. Maybe YOU should do something to protect the rest of us from the thugs you are creating.
ReplyDeleteI have worked since i was 14 years old and I am a homeowner. I was not busy creating a bunch of children he was my only son. I worked full time while in college obtaining my associate in science degree. I graduated with honors.I was not a perfect mom but I did try to instill work ethic and morals. U really need to stop with all the stereotyping.
ReplyDeleteYes this is his mother I work and have since age 14. I have associates degree in science and graduated with honors. I have been a home owner since 1996.stop with all your stereotypes!
ReplyDeleteHow did this fake get out of grade school? I have associates degree? I can't cuz I cudnt? I cannot capitalize cuz im illtrit? Fuck you.
ReplyDeleteanother brother from a so called mother who got fucked by some monster who had latent stages of syphilis...jus' sayin' that you all should check the stats for dat....uh huh.
ReplyDeleteAbhorrent "syphilis" comment rejected.
ReplyDeleteYou try worring about proper grammer after your child is murdered.
ReplyDeleteI am not a fake! Again if you lost your only son would you care about about using proper grammar? Well I don't care I am barely finding the will to live. you probably never lost a child or you couldn't be so cruel. Its easy to say these horrible things anonymously but if you spoke with some of my colleagues you would find that you are picking on a decent human who is in severe mourning.I can't wrap my head around how anybody can find this entertaining.
ReplyDeleteThe author of this blog is not saying stuff "anonymously."
ReplyDeleteFurthermore, how are we--the decent people who live in the neighborhood and own houses in the neighborhood--supposed to FEEL about all this crime, about people with long-as-your-arm criminal backgrounds who treat our neighborhood to all this crime and then, as a kind of grand finale, we witness the spectacle of their MURDERS practically outside our collective front door? Murder that could have been PREDICTED by the outrageous criminal way they were LIVING?
This blog will not tread lightly on the facts and whitewash these unproductive criminal lives. The decent people in our neighborhood need to know that if they just keep on acting like decent people and COMPLETELY AVOID these no-accounts, odds are decent people will be just fine and can live their lives in peace--as much peaces as we can find while this neighborhood is in its current state.
But we are turning it around. Yes we are.
