Being the amazing, true-to-life adventures and (very likely) misadventures of a writer who seeks to take his education, activism and seemingly boundless energy to North Minneapolis, (NoMi) to help with a process of turning a rapidly revitalizing neighborhood into something approaching Urban Utopia. Volunteer Work At The Home Of "Patty Cake And The Polish Lady" (Photos 3 and 4)
Photos By John Hoff
Peter Teachout had to mess around with the wood chipper for a long time. It was apparent something was wrong with the machine, and my best guess was the blades hadn't been sharpened after somebody worked the (expletive) out of the machine and then returned it to the rental company. Another wood chipper arrived, and from that point a lot of wood got...well, chipped.
One of the volunteers made it known it was his job to grind up the branches, which was undoubtedly the coolest of all the volunteer tasks. (That's not Ali A. in the photo, but another volunteer whose name I didn't catch)
In the picture below, three female volunteers toss debris and branch trimmings into a large dumpster. (Click here to learn why you shouldn't capitalize the word "dumpster.")
