A Historical Pic Of The Old Hawthorne School

Somebody sent me this picture of the old Hawthorne School. The way I was told the story, the Hawthorne Neighborhood was NOT named after Nathaniel Hawthorne. Rather the neighborhood was named after THE SCHOOL. The school was named after Nathaniel Hawthorne.

If anybody knows more, they can comment. In any case, it's a cool old picture.

  2. In the Hawthorne Neighborhood, that is as much as I know. Somebody sent me the photo a while ago but I had technical difficulties getting the post up...today I backtracked and found the old pic when I was able to access some of my downloaded documents in a different way.

Hopefully, somebody else knows and will write something.

  3. The Hawthorne School was at 2400 Sixth Street North. It appears the address changed to 426 24th Ave North when a house was built on the site in 1977.

  4. This picture is a view of Hawthorne Elementary School, 2400 N. 6th Street as seen from the SW corner of 24th and 6th. As a youth I spent many hours playing baseball, kickball and basketball on that fine asphalt playground, not counting the time I spent actually attending school there.

The neighborhood is, of course, named after the school. When they were planning to build a new elementary school in the neighborhood I thought they should have named it Hawthorne (after all, the new school in the Whittier neighborhood that replaced the old Whittier school was named Whittier) but they did not. Us older folks who remember the old school weren't their target audience, I guess.

In the mid '70s they knocked down the school and replaced it with six houses of questionable quality.

  5. From 1950-1957 I went to Hawthorne Elementary School. Lived at 240 24th Ave North and walked several blocks straight up 24th to the school. I love the old picture of Hawthorne.

  7. And I think the comment at 11:08 helped to draw your attention to it, so isn't it cool how that works out?

  8. I went to Hawthorne School from 1958 to 1965 (K-6) and the address was 2414 N 6th St, we lived on 4th St. If this is correct I think we were the first Japanese family to attend that school. I remember my first day in kindergarten - I didn't speak English but I learned quickly. When I lived in that neighborhood there were Norwegians, Swiss and Polish (all speaking their native languages). It was interesting growing up there and I miss that neighborhood. Our house/block is now gone (taken over by Clover Leaf Dairy?). I remember the drills we had at Hawthorne where we had to go down to the basement and where we had to go under our desks. I even remember some of the teachers I had there. It is wonderful to see the old picture of Hawthorne, it brings back a lot of fond memories. Oh, one other thing, I remember most of the kids in our neighborhood went to a Catholic school (which they were not allowed to play with us either because we were not Catholic or we were Japanese or both). But we managed to play when our parents were gone. Thank you for letting me share this.

  9. Hey Yuri,
I also attended Hawthorne school. I reconize your name and think you were in my 6th grade class with Mr. Jereski. He was a tough teacher who always had us playing sports.
I lived on 30th avenue and 6th street. It was a fun neighborhood. Did you ever get a chance to play in Farview Park?

  17. I want to point out if you are on Facebook there is a site "Old North Minneapolis" and "Old North Minneapolis" dedicated to history and revitalization of the north side of Minneapolis. Very exciting site developed by Will Lumpkins. If you have a chance please check that out! Many historical memories by folks who grew up in northside Mpls.

  21. I went to Hawthorne 1956-1961. We lived on 30th and 4th and walked through Farview Park to get to school. Sometimes we would walk home for lunch, but when it was too cold we brought a bag lunch and ate it in a classroom.

  24. I'm Kevin Yuri's brother, I had lot of memories in that school.
I was there from 1959 to 1966. I also played at Fairveiw Park. I went there in 2010 and climbed up to the top. I was sitting there and I noticed there was several men coming out if their houses and started climbing the hill so I went down on the playground side and went to my rental car and left.
