South Minneapolis Gets Prostitution Stings, North Minneapolis Just Gets Prostitution

So I was on the Minneapolis City Attorney's website tonight, looking for opportunities to submit neighborhood impact statements, and I thought it was about time to get around to writing a blog post that I've contemplated writing for about a year, now.

Here's the deal. South Minneapolis gets all the police resources for prostitution stings. What does North Minneapolis get? Well, we get the actual prostitutes themselves instead of any sting operations.

Yes, whores can parade up and down Lyndale Ave. N, but will we ever get a (expletive) sting operation up here to thin out the herd?

Not likely. In fact, check out...

...this data, which I pulled off the city attorney website by searching under "livability crimes" and then narrowing it down to just "prostitution." Check out the addresses where these (alleged) crimes took place. THERE IS EXACTLY *ONE* INSTANCE OF A PROSTITUTION ARREST IN NORTH MINNEAPOLIS? How the heck did THAT happen? If I had to guess, I'd think it was some kind of accident.

Meanwhile, our City Councilperson Diane Hofstede has a proposal to ban indoor couches on lawns.

Is that really such a good idea? I MEAN, WHERE WILL ALL THE NORTH MINNEAPOLIS PROSTITUTES GO WITH THEIR DATES?!?!!!!!

Some city leaders really need to straighten out their "livability" priorities. Check out the police action in East Minneapolis and South Minneapolis and then compare with the reality we experience in North Minneapolis. (And when I say "North Minneapolis" I obviously don't mean HOMEWOOD, just for the record)

  1. I hate to say this (not like I'm excusing what you seem to think is a lack of enforcement on the Northside,) but my beloved old neighborhood of Central is GROUND ZERO for prostitution.

It's the absolute epicenter. Hookers and Johns alike flock to 31st (often from other neighborhoods) in order to do their business right around the corner from the Healy House.

So, I'm not really complaining about the stepped-up enforcement and attention in that area. It was/is sorely needed. And things do seem to be much worse there than even on Lyndale N... at least to my eye.

  2. One Hawthorne resident told me a story about how he drove home once in a pickup truck with a sleeper bed hard top attached.

When he went down 21st (right behind Hawthorn Crossings) the prostitutes flocked to him like tweeners to a Jonas Brothers concert. I've always been hesitant to tell our police force how to do their jobs, but I am officially offering this as a tip for how to do prostitution stings.

  3. I could agree with you, there, but it's a matter of North getting NOTHING when it clearly needs SOMETHING, even if that SOMETHING isn't as much as Central needs.

  4. Yes, and there's a reason why my rusty-as-hell 1988 Chevy Celebrity was nicknamed "The Chick Magnet."

Also, the last few days of the month are when the prostitutes really come out of the woodwork. That's when stings should be happening.

  5. The 4th Pct DP team did a john sting just last week. So far in 2009 there have been 13 arrests for prostitution in the 4th Pct, and 4 arrests for loitering with the intent to solicit prostituion. That is the charged used when the police do not got a firm offer of sex for money...most of the experienced johns and whores no how to watch the language they use.

  6. Penn Ave, between broadway and lowry is another epicenter - especially right off the side streets - like 27th & 29th Ave.

  7. To the anonymous poster commenting about 13 arrests in the 4th Precinct, etc., if that stuff is happening it's sure not showing up on the city attorney website as a prosecution. Are they just being WARNED? Or is the data not going up on the website?

That city attorney website is lame and clunky, but it's better than nothing. Often, though, I get the feeling it's being neglected and citizens are not being given the opportunity to submit impact statements.

  8. i am an upstanding, law abiding citizen and generally stay away from trouble, however, somehow about 5 years ago I ended up in a holding cell in hennepin county jail - downtown. The other person in the holding cell with me, a female, was pacing back and forth like crazy and we stuck up a conversation - this was her 97th arrest for prostitution. 97th. She was keeping close count. 97th arrest.

    ReplyDelete
  9. And I'd like to follow up on that comment I just made..what difference does it make that "experienced johns and whores no (sic) how to watch the language they use"? How does this make any difference to NORTH MINNEAPOLIS?

Are the johns and whores in South Minneapolis easier to catch and less careful of the language they use? Clearly not.

Spring is here--well, until we get hit with a blizzard in APRIL, which can happen in this state--and the vice is coming out on the streets. And that's why I'm raising the issue NOW. North Minneapolis needs more prostitution stings, and North is getting ignored.

It would be one thing if all the police resources were going into catching open air drug dealing, but I can buy a shamrock shake at Hawthorn (sic) Crossings strip mall and see THAT'S not true, Hawthorn (sic) Crossings is FILLED with open air drug dealing. So why shouldn't North Minneapolis get its share of prostitution stings? We pay taxes just like South Minneapolis.

  10. To the anonymous poster commenting on the prostitute w/ 97 arrests:

Some states have a "habitual offender" law in regard to prostitution. You get arrested, like, three times and you could go to jail for a few years.

For the record: I am a libertarian where these matters are concerned. My problem is that it's OUT ON THE STREET. Nations like Canada and Mexico have better legal strategies to keep prostitution off the street and within well-defined zones, INDOORS.

That is, however, a theoretical discussion. Reality is it's ON OUR STREETS and not enough is being done in North Minneapolis to get it OFF OUR STREETS.

  11. On a related note, did anyone else notice that when two kids were shot outside Brookdale in December it was in the news for about a day, but when two kids were shot outside Southdale the Gang Taskforce came out to do an undercover operation to make sure there would be no more trouble at Southdale (and the MegaMall, to boot)? Just wondering.

  12. @ KCz - regarding the 2 kids shot at southdale - did you also notice the ambulance took them to HCMC? like they must have rolled right past southdale hospital while they were on their way to HCMC!! i wouldn't be surprised if the ambulance just slowed down and pushed him out when they got in front of HCMC before they headed back to Edina!

  13. On the prostitution issue: The police concentrate on areas where they get the most complaints...and sometimes cops from around the city work together for a while in one area doing stings, so it appears like another area is being ignored.

A couple of years ago, I put a lot of time into calling in prostitution activities at 27th and Penn. For example, on Easter Sunday that year, there were 7 different prostitutes working the corner over a two hour period. My calls (and those of my neighbors) got results. I got the following e-mail from the CERT team one week:

    "Dottie,

As a follow up I wanted to pass on that we conducted a Prostitution
detail early this morning that resulted in 18 total arrests. 6 ere for PC Prostitution (3 from the 27th/Penn area) 1 Pc Narcotics, and 11 misdemeanors. We will continue to monitor the area."

Three weeks later, I got this e-mail:

    "Hi Dorothy,

We did another prostitution detail last Wednesday morning 4/26 and had
13 arrests. We focused again on the area of 27th Penn and on Lowry.
Several of the PC arrests were from Penn.

I will keep an eye on it and hope to do some more enforcement."

    And six weeks after that:

    "Hello,

Penn is becoming one of our top priorities and you should be seeing more of us soon.

Thanks for the info and hang in there!"

I think the cops respond as well as resources allow when we are all persistent and keep calling about the problems. And there is one more thing we can all do (and should): When the cops respond and help clean up a problem, write to them (Tim Dolan, Mike Martin), thank them, and let them know their efforts are appreciated.

  14. Well, I appreciate your detailed commentary, but I have PERSONALLY made MANY 911 calls about prostitution along Lyndale Ave. N., particularly at the end of the month near Farview Park as well as 31st and Lyndale.

But I see no evidence there has EVER been some kind of stepped up enforcement directed at these well-known trouble spots.

  15. I moved up here to the Cleveland neighborhood a few months ago, and yeah, prostitution is bad here also. Prostitution on Penn Ave N doesn't stop at Lowry, I have seen them working all the way past Dowling for the last 2 weeks. Johnny, I agree with ya on this, the police need to do something up here, I have neighbors who have lived here for years saying this is the worst they have seen it in a long time.

  16. All this is great but.....the prostitution is the symptom and not the actual problem. We have a lot adults who have screamed for help for years. Screamed and screamed. Our State and community have chosen to use the personal responsibility card. Fine, valid, perfectly legal. But then when you don't help folks with housing and food and education and you play the responsibility card eventually the bets have to be settled.
Drug sales, prostitution, money laundering, abuses of copyright laws(read: got those movies!) are symptoms of a society that lacks good paying jobs, a housing market that fits income levels, things to do, and affordable education opportunities.
Putting police on the streets is a futile effort and putting nuisance crimes (and that is what prostitution is) in jail for years is a waste of taxpayer money.
I was a pastor in the affected area and many of the little kids we ministered to we children of the very prostitutes you are targeting. Many of these women and they are women, any one of them could be your sister or mother or aunt are trying to survive. Yes they made bad decisions that brought them there but they are trying to do for their own. If you don't have a solution to the actual problem stop wasting time and money chasing these women and close the curtains! Otherwise please talk about actually solving the problem.

  17. Oh, Jiminy Cricket on a pogo stick!!!! Cry me a river.

When I try to bring up something on this blog about DRUG SALES or PROSTITUTION or even CHRONIC MIDDLE OF THE (EXPLETIVE) STREET JAYWALKING BY SOCIALLY UNPRODUCTIVE MINORS, there's always somebody who is going to trot out the whole social diorama of economic injustice, blah blah blah, and tell me to address the "underlying symptoms."

Well guess what? Prostitution on the street is an "underlying symptom" which impacts our housing market and, gee, the taxes used to pay for the very social programs you're talking about. I'll address what I'm going to address: hookers need to be driven off our streets and North Minneapolis needs, wants, and DESERVES its share of sting ops just like South Minneapolis.

So how about you caterwaul about what you care about, and I'll gripe about what I care about, and we'll both be very happy. In the meantime, hookers need to get off the streets of North Minneapolis and citizens need to push, push, push to get that accomplished.

  18. Thanks all for the great comments. Now I know *exactly* where to go to pick up street walkers when I'm in town. Cheers!

  19. You guys are prudes. Prostitutes are awesome. Where else can you get lovin when you don't have time for dating or money to impress women. Plus some of you use prostitutes yourselves. By the way prostitution will never go away. It never has and never will. Men have urges and women need money so get used to it. My only issue is the diseases they carry. By the way can anyone tell me where most prostitutes are at. No reason in particular. Just curious. Hee HEE hee Ha! Johnny Northside don't you know prostitutes just go to different areas and return when your cops can't afford to be every where at once. Prostitution is Awesome baby especially on Fridays when Free Blowjobs are in high supply, Baby.

  20. I received the following info in an email.

    Hi,

Interesting story below. My ex-husband is listed, 3rd from the bottom, Cory Lee Schmidt.

Maybe you would like to write about his dead beat dad status too, has not paid child support in over 5 years.

Drives on a suspended license, is a self employed locksmith and did not tell his apartment manager about his prostitution arrest when tenants are required background checks. After his arrest, he moved to Wisconsin for a year to beat probation.

Any help for my kids and me would be appreciated.
