Vimeo Video Of "Monique's Story" On Foreclosure In North Minneapolis...

Monique's Story: Facing Foreclosure from Peter Leeman on Vimeo.
Blog post by John Hoff

Sitting in Afghanistan, I have read a lot about the Occupy Wall Street movement. In fact, my bother Judd Hoff is involved in the movement and has traveled to Fargo, North Dakota with at least one of his six children to participate in events.

All the same, I really have not made up my mind about the "Occupy" movement and, in particular, I have no opinion about whether I support their occupation of the house at 3310 6th St. N.

However, I was sent this "Vimeo" video by somebody involved in the protest and it's definitely the kind of thing this blog publishes for commentary and debate. So here you go.

  1. I support that 100%. Once you're back you'll most likely support the Occupy movement.

  2. I couldn't get the audio on the video, but did she say if she has been making any payments to anyone since since January when her home was sold? If she hasn't made any payment in nearly a year why should she get to keep the house? Let the sheriff do his job and toss her out. If anyone(Occupiers) gets in his way I hope he tazes them all and then pepper sprays them afterward just for fun. I understand that we on the Northside all face financial hardship from time to time but live within your means and pay your damn bills! Plan ahead! My husband gets laid off from November-April every year and we have never been late on or missed a mortgage payment in 4 years!

  3. Thanks Johnny for posting this video of Monique. There are some in NoMi, or anywhere who are irresponsible and have come to rely on others to support them. In listening to this video of Monique, it is my impression she has a good heart. Monique was working two jobs, one a non-profit, and now she is still working a part-time job when she could just give up. She seems to be making an effort but who could buy enough food and cloths via a pt job at a liquor store? Also, if you are not currently employed, many employers hesitate to hire. The way mortgages are set up, you get behind 2 months or more, it takes an act of God, through the kindness of well to do others, to make amends. Monique . . . if it's ok with you, I will pray for you and others trying to be responsible in NoMI who are behind in mortgages, and pray you get some employment very soon. My heart tells me you want to work and you are looking for work thus trying to be responsible. Unless proven wrong, I will assume you are trying to be responsible. God bless you Monique and your family. Minneapolis needs to support those who show they are making a serious effort to look for work. If you read this Monique, I hope you give us an update.

  4. Livin'UpNorth.

Would you want to be treated in the same way that you want to treat Monique or the people trying to help her? I would like to know if your seemingly fascist bravado comes from someone who feels that the only good welfare is the welfare that you benefit from. I assume your husband receives unemployment benefits between November & April, right? What's the difference between unemployment benefits and other forms of welfare? I would think that for someone in such a precarious position you wouldn't want to throw too many stones. Are you really that secure as to overt a catastrophic situation such as Monique's if you had a slip-up or are you just fooling yourself? I'm not trying to be mean, I'm just trying to understand your logic.

  5. FF when did I say anything about welfare?

And while my husband receives unemployment in the months he is off work we live what is typically described as a "No Frills Lifestyle" meaning that we are not visiting the Pancake House (as evidenced from Monique's fridge art in The video) nor are we enjoying a grill full of Ribs for dinner tonight (also evidenced in the video). We live within our means when times are tough. Cut corners. Eliminate the extras. and BAM! The mortgage gets paid.

  6. You didn't mention welfare, I did. I don't like subsidizing violent people. This includes thugs and people who would want to use violence against NON-VIOLENT people trying to help out a good neighbor. I also have a hunch that you vote Republican too, or do you think that would be a conflict of your interests? This was my point. The poor people eating ribs and going to a pancake house be damned and tazed and pepper sprayed, but give me MY entitlement. Explain how you think you are anymore virtuous than Monique. Would it matter if she were accepting welfare? What if she wasn't? How would you then perceive your own virtue as a welfare recipient?
