Jiyaad Jamaal Copeland Just Can't Stay Out Of Jail, Subject Of MPR Story About Easy Gun Access Back In Jail AGAIN...

Mugshots are public domain, putting your thingie all over it doesn't
change that, also JNS blog asserted public safety exception, blog
post by John Hoff

Jiyaad Jamaal Copeland was the subject of a story on MPR about easy access to guns on the street. Following the story, he was arrested and JNS blog wrote about him.

Well, he's been arrested YET AGAIN...

...and, once again, it's for alleged gun crimes. Copeland was arrested on January 20 by the Stearns County Sheriff's office. He's now sitting in jail on $200,000 bail and charged with possessing a pistol or assault weapon after being adjudicated for a crime of violence. He doesn't have a hearing until March 10. No address is listed though an extraneous comma tells me something was there and then removed so it only says ",Minneapolis, MN 55411."

I've spent so much of my life scrutinizing the jail roster that I've come to the conclusion there is a default in the system which adds ",Minneapolis, MN 55411" automatically. Sometimes I see addresses where are nowhere near the 55411 zip code but these addresses have ",Minneapolis, MN 55411" appended.

But I digress, and in a very geeky blogger way, I might add...

ANYHOW, Copeland's name is flying around in comments made about another matter. I have not gotten to the bottom of those anonymous factual assertions.

Yet.

It should be noted the new arrest could very well be for an OLD matter and might not rise to the level of a new matter.

  1. I have confirmed there is no new charge just the prohibited person charge from May. Due to the "caveated" way this article was written, this is relevant additional info HOWEVER no correction is warranted as the article was written to cover the possibility this was not a new charge.

  3. YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY WRONG. Even though the original photo was public domain, once it is watermarked it becomes the property of the company posting it. They have staff that goes to the courthouse/jail pays (buys copies) of the photos for their use only. Reposting it proves you are violating their copyright because they charge to remove the photo from their site.
Similarly, my son has a high school yearbook photo. I paid for a copy of it. But I cannot make copies, post it on the internet or anything else without the photographers permission. EVEN THOUGH IT IS PUBLISHED in the school yearbook, the yearbook has the rights of publication.
So clearly, you have a limited understanding of copyright, and make up rules to fit your needs

  4. Yeah, that's not how I view it. It's a public document. Throwing a watermark on it doesn't change that. If I have a document that I paid for and I write "This is Johnny's Document" on it and post it online, I haven't just made the public document my document. It's still a public document.

You can get on here and beef about it, anonymous commenter, but you're not the one who paid for the document so what you have to say is largely irrelevant. Furthermore, I try to be nice and send traffic to those sites with the document. I believe I am in compliance with emerging and current views of copyright.

  5. Instead of doing a story about "easy gun access", MPR ought to be doing a story about why people who have been legally proscribed from possessing a gun are given only minimal penalties for transgressing that prohibition. These are the guys who commit violent crime. They should face many years in prison for unlawful possession of a gun. It would save lives.

  6. According to p84 of this PDF, http://www.house.leg.state.mn.us/hrd/pubs/firearmsgd.pdf#page77 being a "prohibited person in possession" carries a 5 year minimum mandatory sentence. Is that truly being enforced, and is it sufficiently harsh? I'd like to hear the opinion of Johnny and others.

  7. The only thing better than convicting a prohibited person for possessing a weapon once is doing it two or three or four times. Just like those repeat drunk driving convictions.

  8. Do A story on how he killed Ty Crack in epic night club and why he's not charged with it and it's on camera and his cousin GI Louis banks told him to do it

  9. I'd say it's enforced less the 5% of the time in North Minneapolis.. Some felons even shoot people like @folwell park and only get sentenced to 8 months.

  10. If something is "on camera" is it also online and can somebody link to it for myself and readers?
