Just moments ago, the Hennepin County Attorney's office sent out a press release about the charges against Blackwell, and just by virtue of being in my email that very moment JNS blog might be the first to publish it, as follows...

Man charged in September murder of man walking home Sunday morning

A Minneapolis man was charged in the September murder of a man walking home on a Sunday morning, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Monday.

Jeremiah Elijah Blackwell, 20, was charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of Eulalio Gonzalez-Sanchez, 36, shortly after he got off a Metro Transit bus just a short distance from his home.

“This is a good piece of police work, using all the technology available, to bring some closure to the family and friends of Eulalio Gonzalez-Sanchez,” Freeman said. “While it took more than two months to bring charges, investigators were methodically working the case and we look forward to bringing Mr. Blackwell to justice.”

According to the criminal complaint, Gonzalez-Sanchez left a residence in Northeast Minneapolis at about 6 a.m. on Sept. 21, boarded a bus for his home in Northeast Minneapolis, got off the bus at 6:15 a.m. and at 6:24 a.m. texted his friends that he was nearly home. One minute later, witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots and Gonzalez- Sanchez was found in a parking lot in the 2200 block of Seventh Street Northeast. He was dead from multiple gunshot wounds and his cell phone was missing, the complaint states.

On Oct. 1, a man was robbed of his cell phone at gunpoint in Northeast Minneapolis and eight days later, Blackwell was charged with the robbery. In the meantime, on Oct. 2, police pulled over a vehicle in which Blackwell and another man were riding. From the car, police seized a Ruger .40 cal. semi-automatic handgun that would later be matched to the bullets and shell casings recovered by police in Gonzalez-Sanchez’s murder, according to the complaint.

Further investigation found more links between Blackwell and the ammunition. In addition, Blackwell’s cell phone was just over 200 yards from the murder scene at 6:09 a.m. that morning and was back in North Minneapolis at 7:10 a.m., the complaint states.

Prosecutors have requested a $1 million bail and Blackwell is expected to make his first appearance Tuesday.

-------
Per my usual habit of examining both the lives of the victims and the accused in my crime-ridden neighborhood, I looked into Eulalio Gonzalez-Sanchez. But I was unable to find evidence the man had ever committed a crime in his life, with the exception of illegal immigration in search of hard work and a better life.

This blog has rarely hesitated to level moral judgments at criminal wrongdoers. But I level none at Mr. Gonzalez-Sanchez. Illegal immigration is a difficult public policy issue about which this blog is not taking a position, being the issue is not very relevant to North Minneapolis. Illegal immigration only becomes a crime issue when undocumented workers commit crimes, and I see no evidence Gonzalez-Sanchez ever did that. On the contrary, Gonzalez-Sanchez appeared to be what I'd habitually call a "good citizen."

Rest In Peace, Eulalio Gonzalez-Sanchez. The following embedded YouTube video serves as a respectful tribute to that rarest of things in North Minneapolis: a victim who was a "decent person" and didn't appear to be involved in the exact same bad and unproductive lifestyle choices as his (alleged) murderer. It is, like the murder of "Good Samaritan" Thomas Sonnenberg, a "tragedy of Biblical proportions."

  1. Inadvertently, this blog post had a link to the robbery charge in place of the link to the murder charge. That has now been corrected.

Well, feel free to leave an anonymous comment if you have information different than the police, prosecutors, the judge, the jury (if there was one) and now the prison system.

  5. Yes i know everybody knows they just dont want to tell but jeremiah is innocent and i feel that he shouldnt have to do time for a crime he didnt do the media is so quick to just charge innocent people and its not fair

  6. Jeremiah feel that if he says something the real person who did the crime would lie about it and accuse him dats why he didn't talk with investigators

  7. This is a bunch of bs, Jeremiah didn't have anything to do with killing this man and I know for a fact he didn't he isn't the type either but nobody wants to known as a snitch . HE IS INNOCENT

  8. He's not charged by THE MEDIA. He's charged by the PROSECUTORS. The media are merely reporting on the charges.

  11. I just think its crazy how they found dat gun in a car Jeremiah was driving but discovered it from under his friend seat and on top of that a girl told investigators she gave the gun to the the friend of jeremiah that was riding in the car with him then the investigators said it was 7 people fingerprints on the gun so how could they even charged him for it all i want to know is where is the other 2 friends that always walked around flagging that gun and why they aint got the friend name trell that pulled the trigger to kill that man

  12. Do you have any specifics like NAMES to back up these assertions you are making?

  13. Prosecutors decide who gets charged with what. Media just report.

Or to phrase it another way...

    We report. They decide.

  14. The investigators got pictures of Jeremiah and his friend together 2 days before the murder and the friend the one who got the gun on every picture and he was bragging dat he killed the man to everyone so like i said before everybody knows who pulled dat trigger their scared to talk and dont wanna be known as snitches but the.dude dat did do it he goes by the name Trell

Its crazy cause they said his cell phone records show he was 200 yards from the murder scene 15 minutes before it happen dat dont mean he killed that man they dont got no witnesses saying he was there and they cant say he was there he was just in the area i feel that he could be that case only cause its more than 3 people fingerprints on it

  16. Im very mad cause he in there facing charges for a crime he didn't do and everybody not caring bout his innocence by being quiet about the situation

    ReplyDelete
  17. Is the media still reporting on this case

    ReplyDelete
  18. He still havent got a plea bargain or he aint even had a court hearing to where he says he's not guilty they keep continuing his case every court hearing and making a new court date everytime he do go to court for the murder

    ReplyDelete
  19. No, I think they're about done reporting on it until there is a conviction or acquittal. If you have something to say, feel free to submit a comment.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Only thing i have to say is they need to convict him or let em go they keep continuing his court dates cause they dont have any witnesses

    ReplyDelete
  21. And i feel dat they need to go get the person dat really did it so he can get out of there

    ReplyDelete
  22. Do u kno why they keep continuing his case every court hearing the judge say they gonna continue it to the next month

    ReplyDelete
  23. No, I don't know that but I will tell you that's pretty common and not unique to this case.

  24. I am a friend of jeremiah and he read to me some papers that was served to him and it says who on the paper making statements about the firearm that was found in the car he was driving in but it also says four male fingerprints is on the gun but one male Dna is on the gun and it belongs too a boy name davion jones a old friend of jeremiah's what does that mean

    ReplyDelete
  25. I don't know what it means.

I know that I play fair and if somebody wants to send me a PDF of those "papers," I will be happy to publish those.

If Blackwell didn't do the crime, I don't want him convicted of the crime. But I don't think prosecutors get this stuff wrong very often. But I have an open mind and an open email. You want to send me information instead of just commentary? Send me something solid. Don't feed me little comments and expect me to go running and look.

  26. He didnt do the crime and some of his friends have talked with the investigators thats working this case telling them that the boy that did the murder bragged about doing it to them so the investigators got more info now on who really did it
