Mugshot, therefore public domain, blog post by John Hoff
Information just floating around on the Old Highland Listserv and forwarded to JNS blog by I'm-not-saying-who reveals the City of Minneapolis is THINKING ABOUT enforcing a state nuisance statute against John Adrian Handy. Handy has already been convicted once of animal cruelty but recently more dogs (illegal for Handy to possess if over 20 pounds) were found at his homestead by police; specifically at 1417 Fremont Avenue North.
An official with the Fourth Precinct told neighbors it was great news and they should...
..."savor it."
JNS blog is not yet in "savor" mode because I'm too busy being bowled over by the fact our state has a nuisance statute and city officials are actually THINKING about applying it to an ugly situation in North Minneapolis rather than just letting our pot of soup simmer in its own savory chaos. Oh, but please keep in mind the matter has merely been "referred."
No, friends and neighbors, kids of all ages, our city officials are not yet at the point of actually DOING something and yet we (the decent people who read neighborhood listservs about neighborhood issues) should "savor" this moment. "Savor it" because our public officials are MULLING OVER whether they can help neighbors and innocent animals with this dusty old statute found at the bottom of a legal library "Free Box," it would appear.
I guess when innocent animals are involved the human neighbors and their children stand a much greater chance of actually receiving some help from our city. Good to know. Increasingly, in light of the death of a senior citizen Good Samaritan, a prevailing sentiment in the neighborhood is we have been abandoned by public officials and the judicial system. The "thin blue line" of cops have not abandoned us, thank God, but our public officials have failed to maintain police numbers and provide sufficient reinforcements.
So how about duplicating this "savory" legal action against dozens and dozens of nuisance properties which threaten the peace of safety of residents in North Minneapolis? There are scores of residents who could provide a list of such properties off the top of their head.

Thinking about it? Yes, that is how our government officials operate here in Mpls. Laughable! Boot them ALL out.
ReplyDeleteJust like Jennifer Waisanen's handling of the felonist activities that have taken place at Jon Peterson's 3723 Girard Ave. N. slum. Do any of these people actually give a shit about OUR community?
ReplyDeleteYea no shit, JNS! I got mugged 42nd and Fremont this summer and after calling 911 (being instructed to wait there for officers) I waited for 2.5 hours without ANY police showing up. After about 7 more calls to dispatch they told me that there were only 5 officers that Friday working 394 to 53rd Ave. You tell me how someone can expect safety, security, or justice in that situation!
ReplyDeleteSo what does this nuisance ordinance actually involve? Will it mean he goes to prison for his offenses? Lose his homestead exemption? Have to vacate the premises? Sounds good, but will it actually do anything, or is this just another way for the authorities to blow smoke at the good residents of Nomi?
ReplyDeleteUhhh, can you explain why you have multiple ads for Homestead Road on your site??
ReplyDeleteI'm not aware of any such ads on MY site so can you tell me what you're talking about?

ReplyDeleteIt's about time!
Isn't this a little discriminatory to Dogs under 20lb?
ReplyDeleteI mean, Whose to say he won't start a bantam league?
BANTAM LEAGUE DOG FIGHTS!!!! Oh, you are killing me.
ReplyDeleteBear in mind that the Nuisance Laws were created by the State to address many of the problems we face and have excellent remedies that include civil penalties and help to good landlords needing to evict bad tenants.
ReplyDeleteThe only reason they might be "dusty" is because our City and County Attorneys have never enforced them.
Instead they have been attacking BAD structures in a flawed attempt to drive out bad investors.
At the risk of sounding snarky, if you LOOK at your site right now, at the bottom of the first story is an ad for HOMESTEAD ROAD. It was like that last night as well, only two of your stories had Homestead Road ads.
ReplyDeleteIf the Goddamned city and the Goddamned police can't do anything I think it's time for us to start forming armed militias. Would that get their attention? We're truly on our own up here.

ReplyDeleteI hate to say it but I think you have a bug on your PC because I don't see any ads on my computer.
The ads are the ads. I don't know if the ads you see are the same as the ads I see. Whatever. If some slumlord entity pays its money and advertises on BlogSpot, that's really no different than if, for example, they submit a positive comment about themselves and I publish it. But I've never seen an ad like that. Take a screen shot and email it to me to prove what you are saying. Oh, wait, that won't convince me, either, because it could be Photoshopped. I guess I'll just have to wait for the mysterious ad you're talking about to appear.
ReplyDeleteThis went around on the Old Highland List Serve.
ReplyDeleteOne resident asked this question:
------
Sorry; but I am confused what is there to savor? Is he in jail, will be for long time, being forced from the house? What?
-----------
This is the answer that came from an MPD rep:
-----------
He will probably go to prison for a long time. Yes he will lose his house. There are several charges against him. On our end we are expecting him to serve prison time. We are hoping that the prosecution will push for the maximum. He is a career criminal.
---------
This is the question Johnny Northside has:
So who will get the house? Will it just go on the market for another slumlord to snap up? I feel like our neighborhood is on a cruel and painful treadmill just like those dogs.
Yeah, I checked the page on another computer and other ads from sites I've looked at recently popped up. Fuckin sucks that I have to look at Homestead
ReplyDeleteRoad vomit every time I use a particular computer though. Not JNS's fault. I wonder if those assholes didn't catch wind of his stories and signed up for pop-up ads that would magically appear on his site.
Clear your browser cache. Clear your browser history. I do it every day. Also deselect targeted ads.
ReplyDeleteAlso remember that it sucks to look at the ad but someone paid money to waste your time.
What's to THINK about? Just enforce the damn laws the way they are written!
