The victim was shot with his own gun. This is the most shocking revelation in the criminal complaint against alleged "Good Samaritan Killer" Devon Derrick Parker, charged with the murder of 69-year-old Vietnam War vet Thomas Sonnenberg. In addition to being a vet and a longtime home owner (reportedly trapped by his mortgage in a high crime neighborhood) neither Sonnenberg nor his wife ever had so much as a charge of a speeding ticket. He was known as a helpful and soft-hearted man whose last earthly act...
...was to let a 20-year-old man inside his homestead when that man, apparently a complete stranger to Sonnenberg or no more than a "known face" in the neighborhood, came to the door pleading for help and asserting he was being chased by a gang of men with baseball bats.
Sonnenberg not only offered the man protection of his home but the protection of his gun and military training, instantly taking in the stranger and calling 911. Sonnenberg was wearing a holstered gun, which he reportedly always wore. Sonnenberg locked the door. A 911 call was placed. Some of the cockamamy story told by Devon Parker of being chased by a gang was apparently captured in the recording of the 911 call.
When the police showed up Sonnenberg was dead, his wife had been assaulted, and the assailant (still trapped in the house after Sonnenberg had locked the door) surrendered to police.
The victim's gun, loaded except for one expended round, was found upstairs under a bed.
Decent Northsiders who have seen almost everything are besides themselves with fury over this shocking incident which falls outside the usual pattern of criminal-on-criminal violence or the OTHER usual pattern of small children in close proximity to criminal activity who are hit by stray bullets.
Parker was a convicted violent felon who, incredibly, had been released by Honorable Judge Fred Karasov some days earlier after an admitted violation of terms of probation. The tale of the release is told in dry little notations on MNCIS, as follows.
2/23/2013 Notice of Appearance (Judicial Officer: Karasov, Fred ) 12/30/2013 Probation Violation 12/30/2013 Warrant Issued 12/30/2013 Warrant Cleared by Wt Office 12/31/2013 Probation Violation Hearing (1:30 PM) (Judicial Officer Quaintance, Kathryn L.) Result: Held 12/31/2013 Interim Condition for Parker, Devon Derrick - Post bond 01/23/2014 Hearing (2:30 PM) (Judicial Officer Karasov, Fred) 01/15/2014 Reset by Court to 01/23/2014 Result: Held 01/23/2014 Interim Condition for Parker, Devon Derrick - Post bond 01/23/2014 Probation Violation Admitted (Judicial Officer: Karasov, Fred ) 01/31/2014 Probation Violation Hearing (10:00 AM) (Judicial Officer Karasov, Fred) Result: Held 01/31/2014 Warrant Issued
The crime at issue was some kind of "crime against transit operation." A "third degree assault, substantial bodily harm" case for which Parker was ALSO on probation was wrapped into that same hearing in front of Judge Karasov.
Despite ADMITTED parole violations on January 23, Parker was released by the judicial system to commit the cold blooded murder of a war vet and good Samaritan, plus assault the man's wife inside their home (allegedly)).
Ironically, few judges have as much military background as Judge Fred Karasov, who is a Gulf War vet. JNS blog suspects this matter weighs heavily on the soul of Honorable Judge Karasov and I have elected to reign in my criticism. It appears, however, a terrible miscalculation has been made by the judicial system. Parker should have been in jail but instead he was out on the streets to commit murder, allegedly.
It should be noted Parker is "Facebook friends" with baby-faced gang banger Glenn Smith, whose release a few days ago after charges stemming from an alley shooting incident where a 74-year-old man was hit in the face is equally inexplicable.

This is the same judge who sentenced Denzell Mitchell 9/21/11 to 5-1/2 years for aggravated robbery with conditional confinement of only one year. That left Mitchell free on 0/20/13 to commit burglary.

DeleteWhy is the only charge second degree murder?
ReplyDeleteWhere does the Judge live and how many dangerous felons has he released back to his neighborhood?
ReplyDeleteWhy second degree? I assume there was a judgment that it lacked premeditation. It was, after all, the victim's gun.
ReplyDeleteApparently Devon Patrick was involved in some sort of shooting involving public transportation. Online records show that he was charged and plead guilty to that felony count for some sort of shooting and was sentenced for that count.
ReplyDeleteAt the online Minnesota court records is found the following

It is disgusting, disgraceful, and pathetic that you check the criminal histories of people killed in north side violence, and then post it.
ReplyDeleteSo if this poor elderly victim had a speeding ticket, you'd find it necessary to tarnish his memory by posting it?
Decent citizens all over Minneapolis are outraged by this senseless act.
The only difference is YOU are NOT a decent citizen, you are a heartless, inhuman scumbag, who only sees this death as an opportunity to write a blog post.
Too bad it's not a "criminal-on-criminal" (what you really mean to say is black-on-black) killing so you can post their criminal histories and maybe videos and ramp up your blog hits (yes, I'm using your famous sarcasm font).
Can't wait for your tragic end so we can post all the crap about your life. Won't your son be proud.
Good question. What is the judge's address? C'mon Johnny you publish everyone else's, or are you too much of a boot licker to dare?
ReplyDeleteJudge Karasov is up for re-election in 2017. He ran unopposed last time and prior to that was appointed by Pawlenty. It's time to eliminate the crony judiciary MN has had for decades.
ReplyDeleteThe grassroots effort to unseat this elitist, callous judge needs to start here. Please, everyone that feels similarly, let's start a website, facebook page, whatever to drum up support for unseating this overseer of injustice!
PS Judge Karasov lives in Golden Valley, and no he would never release a multiple, violent felon into that neighborhood because he knows they cannot afford to live there.
ReplyDeleteIt's time for him to see what real justice is. Impeach or unseat the crook! Write to every legislator you can think of. We need to show the elitist judiciary of this state (which is almost universally appointed undemocratically) that VIOLENT FELONS deserve jail time. I thought after Sandy Hook, Americans would take our existing gun laws much more seriously. Apparently Karasov was off sipping martinis at his country club when the debate occurred!
I'm all for reducing and eliminating sentences for non-violent drug offenders, but this very situation is what our entire country talked about fervently for months after SandyHook. Why weren't you listening Karasov?!!
No. I will not be publishing the judge's address. Making a mistake due to too much faith in humanity is not the same as being an accused criminal.
ReplyDeleteNo. I will not be publishing the judge's address. Making a mistake due to too much faith in humanity is not the same as being an accused criminal.
ReplyDeleteBe assured that if the man had nothing more than a single speeding ticket, I would say so. As it is, however, he doesn't have so much as a speeding ticket that I can turn up in my search. His record and that of his wife is unblemished so near as I can determine and I did look. That being the fact, of course I will state that is the fact. So what's your beef? Too much truth leave a bad taste in your mouth?
ReplyDeleteYou mean Devon PARKER not PATRICK but, yeah, you're showing the correct record on MNCIS in the rest of your comment.
ReplyDeleteYou're a boot licking hypocrite Johnny.
ReplyDelete@JNS@5:59: What I meant was, why not more charges? Felon in possession of a firearm, terrorist threats, kidnapping, concealing evidence -- make him WORK for his plea.
ReplyDeleteWhere is the mayor's voice in all this? Shouldn't she show some compassion and care for the victim and his family and order the city attorney's office and the cops to start to get tough on criminals in MPLS. Afterall she wants to add some 100k people to the city...assuming these new residents are going to be decent middle class people they will want to know they are safe and the city doesn't accept crime such as this. The city needs leadership not just empty words.
ReplyDeleteSeems to me that Sonnenberg was the one with too much "faith in humanity". Judge Karasov is appointed (and paid) to administer justice and protect our society, not endangering the public by dealing out his own brand of social opportunity.
ReplyDeleteWhy wasn't a psych evaluation ordered for a guy who shoots at a bus full of people?
My comment at posted Feb 3 at 5:59 PM does have an error as noticed by JNS.
ReplyDeleteThe comment should begin:

Continuing on as originally posted.
Not sure how that happened, apologies for any confusion.
Speak for yourself, John. I am a "decent northsider" and I have seen everything, but I'm not outraged over this. Unlike you, I'd rather direct my energies toward improving the neighborhood one step at a time, instead of tearing it down piece by piece.
ReplyDeleteSonnenberg had too much faith in Judge Karasov and the rest of our civic leaders!
ReplyDeleteWhere are the Mad Dads ? Why aren't they having a vigil for this man who was taken away from us? Where the hell are they now? Your silence speaks volumes, SMITH! Where are the poverty pimps..? All of you assholes can burn in your make- believe hell.. phony, fake perpetrators.
ReplyDeleteIn "defense" of the Mad Dads, if you want to call it that, does anybody really think the family would want a vigil from self-appointed community spokespeople wearing funky hats, talking through loud speakers, etcetera? I mean, if you know different then tell me different, but you ask me it's just as well Mad Dads kept their nose out of it and stick to holding vigils for criminal-on-criminal violence and children hit by stray bullets while in close proximity to criminal activity. This was a decent homeowner and a citizen, not a typical casualty of the crime in our neighborhood. It wasn't a typical Mad Dads situation and fine they stayed away. But did anybody WRITE anything on the internet CONDEMNING this who was speaking on behalf of Mad Dads? Somebody post a link if you've seen something like that.
ReplyDeleteMad Dads has done more for the north side than John Hoff ever will.
ReplyDeleteHoff is just jealous that they get more TV and newspaper coverage than JNS does.
The difference is that the Mad Dads have care and compassion for the north side. Hoff just sees it as fodder for his blogging.
It doesn't matter where John Hoff has lived or currently lives as he'll write the same crap he's been spewing out for years.
Hoff just wants attention, any way he can get it.
Seattle, Texas, Grand Forks, Alexandria, Minneapolis - Hoff has left a trail of angry, antagonized, and damaged reputations in his wake.
Truth, falsehood, made-up data is all good for the "dominant blogger" in NoMi.
Just don't stand in his way or he'll stalk you and your family for is next headline.
In Minnesota, a grand jury indictment is required for first degree murder. This hasn't gone to a grand jury yet.
ReplyDeleteFuk derrick parker..everybody waiting on him to come to st.cloud so they can use him as a punching bag..no respect for a punk of that nature..u don't touch elderly people..oan and fuk ynt and Taliban..1x for 19 #crackcity
ReplyDeleteLet this be a lesson, if somone comes to your door who you don't know pull the gun out of the holster and aim between the eyes and squeeze, you'll be out in 24 hours and you can do it again!
ReplyDeleteVery sad day when a vet gets killed by a pile of shit like that, why don't u bangers take out lil bitches like devon and make yourselves useful!
They do, that's how we were lead to this blogspot. Duh!
DeletePhuck the Mad Dads they only come out when a camera is present.
ReplyDeleteJake G, your comment is deplorable,as are you. Please go knock on someone's door and make this world less ugly. As far as Mad Dads, I am thoroughly disappointed that they have not mentioned this on their facebook page or sent any message to the community. There is no excuse for that the page is more accolades to VJ,and his sex offender, community outreach coordinator son, Marco.
ReplyDeleteAsk freddy karasov about other murders he is complicit in....such as the murder of Thomas Malloy. I think Judge Freddy is prejudiced against people with the name Thomas.
ReplyDeleteThe "angry sperm-dumpers" are part of the problem as they continue to run their Chicago bullshit and fuck up Minneapolis. talk, talk, talk,..as long as its black youths killing each other they have a job and they know it!
ReplyDeleteThey hope for it! do not let these charlatans fool you...they are fucking crack dealing crooks who use religion to run their poison.
To the commenter writing about "Thomas Malloy," first of all The Honorable Judge Karasov will be referred to by me as the Honorable Judge Karasov, not "freddy," but this blog does encourage a wild and wooly free speech debate. So I approve your comment with that caveat. Show this man respect, even if you think he made a mistake.
ReplyDeleteSecondly, I (of all people) am familiar with the death of bicyclist Thomas Malloy but please elaborate on what the heck you think Honorable Judge Karasov has to do with THAT? I'm not going to go digging and look into your remark. You'll have to make your own point and support it, whatever it is. You haven't done that, yet.
You'll have to make your own point and support it, whatever it is. ? ? Have to? Haven't done that, yet. ? ? To begin to understand Freddy Karasov will require one to actually read his history. A snippet in a blog will not suffice to explain judicial depravity, or Freddys history of prosecutorial misconduct. Freddy
DeleteKarasov is a self serving judge, with a tremendous appetite for power. He has committed felony crimes as a prosecutor, and has not yet been properly punished. And now this. A successful judge must possess a sense about a case, that is an ability to see past the lies. Freddy, as his friends refer to him, is a complex example of of a frequent visitor who inhabits so very many of the judicial elite minds. That relentless visitor is named Narcissus.
To the "angry sperm dumpers" commenter, I can't make heads or tails of your remark. What the heck do you mean? Who are these charlatans to which you are referring? Who are the "angry sperm dumpers"? Confused as hell by your remark. I have approved the remark because talking about how some people have a job as long as black youth are killing each other does NOT seem like a racist remark, rather it seems like a commentary on certain non-profits who always have a job advocating as long as the violence continues to exist. As for Chicago, well, it is a sad commentary but there's general agreement many of the criminals on our streets in Minneapolis have roots in Chicago.
ReplyDeleteThis might have been answered above, but in Minnesota you require a Grand Jury to file a first-degree murder charge.
ReplyDeleteI don't know this judge, but all he did was follow the law. You may not like it, but he has case law and statutes on his side.
Yes, I believe this comes down to you disliking his ruling -- not that he is a bad judge.
WHERE ARE MY COMMENTS: AND DON'T GIVE ME THAT SHIT THAT YOU DIDN'T RECEIVE THEM - YOU KNOW YOU DID!!!
ReplyDeleteJohnny Northside! said IN ANOTHER POST...
JNS blog abhors the comment above but has published it in a spirit of vigorous First Amendment commentary.
Horseshit. I have submitted several comments that were never approved and posted to this blog.
"...spirit of vigorous First Amendment commentary", my ass.
To the anonymous commenter writing in caps, griping that his comment wasn't published: Oh, could you tell me which comment that was? Since you're anonymous do you think I have any way of telling what you're talking about?
ReplyDeleteI wonder what Judge Karasov would say about how this blog post? And how people were manipulated into veiled threats by the blogger and the way he posted the article.
ReplyDeleteNothing like baiting behavior...
If the Honorable Judge Karasov has something to say I am certainly open to hearing whatever he would like to say and, indeed, I'd be more than happy to publish his commentary.
ReplyDeleteThe former Senior Hennepin County jailor Karasov, who used his job in the Hennepin County Jail, as a place to study for the bar exam, thus cheating the taxpayers, while he advanced himself within the Hennepin County prosecution system, cannot and never will comment here. He would be in violation of the rule known as the right to remain silent. When anyone is guilty of criminal behavior, it is established reason that you keep your mouth shut. Even judges can go to prison, and Karasovs comments, if he were to be so stupid as to make one, could be used against him in the event he was charged the concealing evidence, or Treason.
DeleteAsk the "Honorable Judge" if he'd put a person like this back on the streets in his neighborhood so he could knock on his door.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Judge Karasov would be too concerned about Johnny Northside!.
ReplyDeleteAs a former prosecutor he had to deal with deadbeats and nutcases every day.
As a Judge he'll just toss the John Hoff info in the looney bin with all the other blow-jobs and wackos he deals with.
Hoff's grandiose sense of self-worth is overestimated.
At 7:47 PM
ReplyDeleteAnd yet you're drawn to his blog like a moth to a fugging flame.
Narcissus, you say?
ReplyDeleteTreason with a capital T, you say?
You haven't made a single point or asserted a single relevant fact. If you have some facts to put forth, put those forth. Otherwise get back in your time machine and go back to the 19th Century where your prose will find a more receptive audience.
I may be very unhappy with Honorable Judge Karasov because of this case but, really, what is all this flap-twaddle you are writing? Hot air, sound and fury signifying nothing, "a tale told by an idiot."
Citing coverage by both mainstream media and "bloggers," the honorable Chief Judge removes Honorable Judge Karasov from the Parker case.
