Decisive City Action Against Khan, HOORAY
Pictured above, a Mahmood Khan property where a fire took place, 2008 21st Ave. North. It's not the only property where there's been a fire on Khan's watch. There was a fire in March of 2013 at 4425 Aldrich Ave. North which had people bailing out of windows and one couple dangling their four-year-old child from the window...
"Let him go!" yelled firefighter Robert Martin, and caught the child, according to an account in the Star Tribune.
It was not this dramatic fire on Aldrich Ave. N., but a fire some time later at 2008 21st Ave. N. which caused this blog to editorialize as follows:
WHEN IS THE CITY OF MINNEAPOLIS GOING TO TAKE THIS BASTARD'S RENTAL LICENSES!???? WHEN CHILDREN DIE!!???
My editorial comments were strongly worded even by the expressive standards of this blog, but I intended to provoke our city officials to action before something happened like, well, what happened at the property of Paul Bertelson.
Now, a little under a year after the second fire, the city is taking action to revoke all of Khan's rental licenses. I guess it's time to say, in large letters, THANK YOU CITY GOVERNMENT OF MINNEAPOLIS FOR HEARING OUR NEIGHBORHOOD'S CONCERNS AND RESPONDING EFFECTIVELY.
Aging Hooker Suing Khan? Or "Name Is The Same?"
An article in the Star Tribune reminded me there was a lawsuit against Khan for injuries from the fire at 4425 Aldrich Ave. North. Trying to research this lawsuit led me to write about the mind-boggling number of evictions filed by Khan. Well, now it's time to focus specifically on the lawsuit over the fire and, oh, it's not pretty, folks.
One of the tenants in the lawsuit, as revealed in a Star Tribune article naming her and then compared with a civil suit filing on MNCIS, (27-CV-14-15718, Mike Williams, Angela Cannedy v. Mahmood Khan) was a woman named "Angela Cannedy."
Naturally, I searched both the criminal and civil side of MNCIS to see what turned up for anybody named "Angela Cannedy" and, well, oh my.
I will just let this rap sheet speak for itself:
27-CR-85-903050
There is, I must say, a delightful CONSISTENCY in both this rap sheet and, presumably, Cannedy's lifestyle and career choice. Please note the ONLY thing she's ever been charged with is prostitution. No drugs, no speeding, just THIRTEEN instances of being charged with prostitution in Minnesota.
And convicted. EVERY TIME.
However, all the charges show Angela Frances Cannedy as a resident of Brooklyn Center, not North Minneapolis. Also, the civil suit against Khan naming "Angela Cannedy" as plaintiff does not list a middle name nor a birthday. However, one of the prostitution busts which turns up with an online mugshot shows the arrest taking place in "Minneapolis." Which makes it more likely it's the same Angela Cannedy.
But here's another arrest which took place in Brooklyn Center, click here for mug shot. Certainly the crossover between crime in Brooklyn Center and North Minneapolis is well known, but my level of certainly hovers around 85 to 95 percent, not 100 percent. As a blogger rather than paid mainstream journalist, it has been my habit in these close instances to make a judgment call, publish, and call attention to the fact there is a lesser degree of certainty than I would prefer.
A Different Image Of What Happened That Night?
People were in danger that horrible night on Aldrich Ave. N., when 20 people got out of the building, nine were injured, and somebody had to toss a 4-year-old child from a window to the waiting arms of a Minneapolis fireman. But if Angela Cannedy at the fire is the same as Angela Frances Cannedy, the hooker, how does this change the collective image of what happened that night?
Well, first of all, it makes me wonder what kind of things that four-year-old child was witnessing. It makes me wonder what kind of desperate legal defense might be mounted in light of these unseemly facts, if indeed there are unseemly facts and this is the same Angela Cannedy.
Picture, if you will, how attempts might be made to get something in front of the jury:
DEFENSE ATTORNEY: Now, ma'am, when you were asked your name in earlier testimony, and your job, and you said you were unemployed, that wasn't the whole truth, was it?
ANGELA CANNEDY: I don't know what you mean by, by whole...
DEFENSE ATTORNEY: Well, let me just cut to the chase, here. You're a professional prostitute, aren't--
PLAINTIFF ATTORNEY: Objection! Objection and a sidebar, your honor.
JUDGE: Approach. (In a whisper, to defense attorney) What on earth, counselor? Relevancy?
DEFENSE ATTORNEY: Your honor, anybody who watches a movie where there's a sex scene knows that afterward people smoke cigarettes, so if there was a lot of sex going on, paid sex as part of prostitution, then most likely there would be a lot of cigarette smoke and--and--the smoke detectors could have been deliberately disabled so--
PLAINTIFF ATTORNEY: Good god.
JUDGE: Approach the topic in a different way, counselor. If you get there you get there, but you'll have to start with the smoking, the smoke detectors--I'm not going to advise you, but it seems fairly obvious. And if you ever try to get something like that in front of a jury again without laying foundation I'll have you in jail for contempt UNDER the courthouse? Are we clear?
DEFENSE ATTORNEY: Crystal, your honor.
PLAINTIFF ATTORNEY: I'm going to object if he tries to bring up Crystal, Kitty, Honey, or any of the other women without laying foundation.
DEFENSE ATTORNEY: And how are you defining "women?"
...
To Be Continued, In Court
As I've mentioned, I'm looking forward to wrapping up this blogging mission and writing novels. I can already see a more imaginative and fictionalized form of writing trying to come out. But for now let's continue in the dry world of online court records with what is actually known about Angela Cannedy.
There are two family court cases naming somebody named "Angela F. Cannedy," one in which "Janice C. McClain" took Cannedy to court in 1989, and another in 1993 in which the same "Janice McClain" took Angela to family court again, this time with the Hennepin County Bureau of Social Services as an additional petitioner.
It seems likely Cannedy has a child and Janice McClain is the person taking care of this child.
In 1998, an entity named LA Investments, Inc. from Eagan, Minnesota sued Angela Cannedy in an eviction action.
At that time, also named as defendants were Michael Williams and "Angela Williams." It seems likely "Angela Cannedy" and "Angela Williams" are the same person in the suit and this is really an "also known as" listed as another defendant.
What's notable is that in 1998 Angela and Michael Williams were living together and getting evicted together. A decade and a half later, they were trying to get out alive from the burning building on Aldrich Ave. N.
That completes what I know about Angela Cannedy. And what I don't know. For the record, I state once again that a "name is the same" coincidence is possible. But if it's NOT a coincidence, then the whole ugly mess makes you wonder who to cheer for...the slumlord? Or somebody with baggage of a baker's dozen prostitution convictions?
I just hope testimony might reveal how Khan runs his empire...why he's so happy to house people with extensive criminal records. How, exactly, does that fit into a profitable business model? Hmmmmm?
Another fact which makes me think this could be the same Angela Cannedy...well, it wouldn't even be the first time somebody involved in prostitution was connected to a Khan rental. In 2013, there was (good God!) SEX TRAFFICKING OF MINORS taking place at what turned out to be a Khan rental.
KHAAAAN!!!!!!!
How happy I am the City of Minneapolis is finally taking down this notorious slumlord. THANK YOU!
And now there is no better way to wrap up this blog post than a tried-and-true YouTube embed of "the Khan scream."
