ANOTHER Khan property at 2639 Oliver Ave. N., blog post by John Hoff
Two words: Mahmood Khan.
I've seen three media reports on the recent fire at 4425 Aldrich Ave. N. and every one of those reports pussy-foots all around the ownership of the building. Mahmood Khan is one of the most notorious slumlords in North Minneapolis, the bane of our neighborhood revitalization. According to even these PUSSY FOOTED media reports, the house in question (which is NOT pictured above, that's ANOTHER shitty Khan property) was carved into eight different apartments.
Only ONE of those apartments had a working smoke detector...
KSTP says 25 people were in the house but god only knows how many drifted in and out of this low end living situation.
Other (pussy footed) media reports can be found in the Pioneer Press and the Star Tribune. I am at a loss to understand how the Star Tribune report did not mention Mahmood Khan. It was only back in August of last year the STrib published a story about him. (By the way, I was interviewed for the story and my repeated mentions of how nobody really knows where all that Khan money goes and, HELLO, the guy is from PAKISTAN somehow didn't make its way into the final article)
It takes, like, 30 seconds to look up the ownership of the property on the city's website.
But enough about THAT.
Two thoughts: Thank god nobody died.
And will this finally be the nail in the coffin of Khan's slumlording? It was only on February 16 that Jeff Skrenes reported on the North By Northside blog that Khan is thinking of selling off his properties and leaving North Minneapolis.

"Two thoughts: Thank god nobody died." You know what, I call B.S. It's only going to be when 25 people die when these city clowns take this kind of problem seriously enough. Minneapolis city officials should be hanging their heads in shame or hanging themselves at this point.
I think that last idea about hanging themselves is badly expressed but, yes, it is inexplicable how the process is so slow and lets this slumlord keep doing his dangerous thing. And, also, I really think somebody will have to die before they take his rental licenses.
They ARE cracking down upon him and have been for a while, but clearly it's not having the desired impact.
Does anyone know how the fire started...jewish lightning??
I've heard that Khan has posted 60 properties on the northside on Craigslist for sale. The asking price is supposed to be $3 million.
Why does the City allow this to go on?
What is wrong with our leadership that they can't make the City protect the homesteaders and victims that rent these properties?

Meantime, the property is already on the radar of city investigators. Officials say they've responded to 475 calls to that address since 1989.
So how many calls does it actually take to get some action? Preventative action? Punitive action? One wonders if maybe NOW they're getting ready to give the owner a call, or maybe after the next 475 calls or the next fire...

4425 Aldrich is actually not a" house cut into 8 units". It's a old turn of the century boarding house from when the Camden hood was big on lumber. I believe the city records say the building was built in 1900, its speculated even earlie though. I'm sorry to see the building damaged and glad to hear nobody was hurt! Maybe the neighborhood can reclaim it somehow
