Fire That Killed 5 People Was At 2818 Colfax Ave. N., Owned By Mission Inn Minnesota, An Entity Controlled By Slumlord Paul Bertelson...

One major media outlet is reporting the recent duplex fire which killed five people (so far) was at 2818 Colfax Ave. N. This troublesome slumlord entity is controlled by Paul Bertelson, whose neglectful doings have slimed their way through the virtual pages of this blog a handful of times...

In June of last year, one of Bertelson's properties came up in association with a story about gangs and gun crimes, click here.
The name of Mission Inn Minnesota came up with yet another story about gun crime in May of 2012, click here. It was Halloween of 2009 when this blog first urged city officials to have Paul Bertelson on their radar and look into his slum lording practices and do something about him. City officials apparently were not listening very hard and now five people are dead.

So far.

At the beginning of this month, a Paul Bertelson property at 3103 James Ave. N. was raided by police. That particular entity was under the name Renewal Development LLC but was, once again, a Paul Bertelson entity. One neighbor took a photo of the aftermath of the raid and posted it on North Vent Facebook Forum where it was used as "wall paper" for a while.

In January of 2013, this blog wrote about an incident at a Bertelson property where Desmond Deshaw Cathron was accused of domestic violence by banging a woman's head against a bed, over and over.

There are reports, so far, of 15 people in that duplex. That is simply too many but you can bet Bertelson was raking in the dough the more people he could pack in a duplex and charge rent. Even if people are related by blood, there needs to be some kind of upper limit on the number of people who can live "per square foot" in rental housing, particularly if the rental housing is subsidized.

Though I do not have proof this housing was subsidized, I will eat a can of fried silkworm pupae and post it on YouTube if solid proof comes my way it WAS NOT.

JNS blog urges the city of Minneapolis to revoke all the rental licenses of Paul Bertelson and, by any legal means necessary, take emergency control of his rental properties.

  1. SHIT!

When are our civic representatives going to stop sticking their heads in the sand and address these issues?

  2. A version of this blog post which appeared for about ten minutes online said "five children." I am told it was, in fact, three children and two adults and therefore I have quickly corrected. If there are more fatalities as a result of the fire, however, that will be noted in a comment since the headline and story is accurate this moment so far as I can determine.

  3. Bertelson likes to dress up his slumlording in the raggedy clothing of "Christian charity," see this blog post on Hawthorne Hawkman's blog.

  4. You are such a scumbag. People died, and all you can do is trash them and their landlord. Have you no humanity, no compassion for those that died? Is all you can see is getting a headline in your blog? You are a pathetic piece of shit!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. John,
Maybe THEY should SUE the City & the leaders that turn a blind eye to this BS. Once someone is successful in this endeavor and can get MILLIONS from the City, then maybe someone WILL do something about it. Do the leaders really CARE about the misfortunate in these hell holes?
Did anyone (civic leaders) care about the dying gays of AIDS in San Francisco or anywhere back in the day (Dallas Buyers Club)?

  7. I bet he's rubbing his palms together right now ,thinking about how he gets to wright that 10,000.00 dollars on his taxes next year. He'll probable be able patch together the section 8 dump ,and the government money or should I say our taxes and let the voture begin flowing once a gain right into his bank account . And soon again be rolling in it .Wasn't suppose to make some changes and make sure these places are code. A smoke detector is such a small price to pay . Shame on you Paul Bertelson. You sicken me you are truly disgusting .

  11. This article mentions how the previous family who lived on the second story moved out because of "problems" with the electrical outlets.

The blood is on the hands of the beurocrates whom stand by idely and let these homes that are bought by slumlord whom neglect them and destroy the community as well as there not safe for occupancy . Lots of people are to blame for basterdizing North Minneapolis , but Paul Bertelson I hope the father of these children gets a really good lawyer and sues him for the five wrongful deaths of those five children . Really three baseboards not working , . SHAME ON YOU ! , YOU CHEAP PIECE OF SHIT ! , ROT IN HELL pAUL bERTELSON !!!!!

  14. We ought to pay Paul a visit to his home.

  15. Pay Paul a visit, you say?

I've heard people say that kind of thing about slumlords all the time. I see it written on the pages of North Vent. But it never actually happens and the fearsome threat of picketing has no teeth and never comes to fruition. I'm afraid that the best you're going to get is right here on social media, that's the biggest price Bertelson will pay...

    Until the lawyers show up.

  16. If this rental just passed code inspection then maybe we need to do away with our inspection criteria and go with Edina's. Because this doesn't happen in Edina!

Paul Bertelson is a psychopath who hides behind God to get rich victimizing the poor!

  17. Who says picketing John? Time will tell...

  18. People should picket John Hoff's home and teach him to learn some compassion and respect.

  20. So I'm curious. You have posted several articles insinuating that Paul Bertelson being a slumlord is responsible for this fire. Since the fire investigators have determined the fire is of undetermined origin, if your blog posts have a negative effect on his rental income, or licensing, can he file suit against you for "defamation per se?

    ReplyDelete
  21. How did you manage to make a leap all the way from "insinuated" to "defamation per se?" My neck hurts from whiplash just trying to follow your messed up logic.

  22. They're still looking at the space heater.

    http://www.startribune.com/local/minneapolis/246223591.html

If Bertelson didn't have the baseboard heaters working and the place wasn't warm enough, and they had to use a space heater to stay warm...

That's still pretty slummy, wouldn't you say?

  23. Troy Lewis said he bought a space heater because he told the landlord three of the heaters didn't work, but the landlord hadn't fixed the problem.

"The heater was on fire in the house," Lewis told Fox 9's Maury Glover. "It was just blazing. That's when I backed off because I couldn't get no closer because I was running out of air."

The duplex at 2818 Colfax Avenue N. passed inspection 6 months ago and property owner Paul Bertelson told Fox 9 there were no maintenance issues he was aware of.

  24. you people are the most ignorant people i have ever fucking heard in my entire life. I lived there when the fire happened and lost everything in my unit due to this tragedy. all you stupid mfs can say is that this didnt work and this was not corrected. first and foremost troy lewis space heater caught on fire because he had flammable and combustable items in front of it!!!! yall dont know anything. all youre doing is going off of what the next person said. im here telling all of you first hand. my heat worked perfectly fine. i owned fans not space heaters. i find it hard to believe that the heat didnt work properly because heat rises. Paul Bertleson has been nothing but helpful from the moment i moved in there. what makes yall look so stupid is the fact that you all are blaming him when all he does is gives people a chance. it not his fault that dumb fools are getting raided. is not his fault that a woman beater was banging his girls head against a bed rail. like wtf is wrong with yall? am i blaming troy lewis for his house catching fire causing him to lose 5/7 of his children due to negligence???? am i blaming troy lewis or paul bertleson for me and my family having no where to go???? NO IM NOT!!! yall all got something to say but none of you are in these situations so from me to you....stfu and mind your own business. worry about how the streets can get clear of drugs and corruption or world hunger ending....hell if you all put your brains together for something positive you just might find a cure for AIDS or CANCER!!! do something with yourselves....

  26. Something up with Bertelson's Rental License? Now he's on the list?
    www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/inspections/WCMS1P-123806

Also checked and a number of the Mission Inn properties have new TISH inspections since April 1, 2014. Some repair permits pulled on the same properties, maybe he thinks it is time to be getting out of the landlord business?

at 2815 Colfax the recent TISH Report has " #37 Gas Piping Unapproved materials used for gas piping. Plumbing permit required for repair."

  27. If he's getting out of the landlord business then the city must take quick, drastic steps to make sure all those properties don't end up on the open market but fall into the hands of the city and from there, somehow, into the hands of decent property owners.
