Taking The Grand Tour Of 2601 Penn Ave. N., New Home Of The Hawthorne Hawkman...

Photos, blog post by John Hoff blogging from a Burger King in rural Minnesota

A couple weeks ago, Jeff Skrenes gave me and my son, Alex, a tour of his new home at 2601 Penn Avenue North, a location that is right in the middle of everything. From all sides of Jeff's property, one can stand and watch the unstoppable, inevitable forces of neighborhood revitalization pushing up against, well...

Images, Aftermath Of The "Nobody Cares But Northsiders" Shooting On Penn Ave. N.

Photos contributed by Jeff Skrenes, blog post by John Hoff

Jeff Skrenes, who recently purchased a house on Penn Ave. N., and quickly received his "baptism of fire" when a shooting happened between the occupants of two cars on the street outside, recently sent me four photos of the aftermath of the incident.

Nobody was killed and the incident didn't even make "the news," except the version of the news offered up by Johnny Northside Dot Com.

However...

Introducing New Penn Ave. N. Resident Jeff Skrenes To "The Hooker Steps" At 2755 Penn Ave. N.

Photo, blog post by John Hoff

Jeff Skrenes, whose numerous neighborhood titles will probably soon require a special blog post that I can link to and skip introductions each time he is mentioned herein, is a new homeowner on Penn Ave. N. Buying that home shows how Jeff Skrenes--who I normally think of as "King of the Geeks"-- has a bit of a gambler streak. But if anybody can turn that area around, it's the Hawthorne Hawkman; part nerd, part swashbuckler.

Naturally, when I visited his home for the first time I wanted to know what problems he was having with Penn Ave. N. hookers...

"It's Crazy How Used To This S*** You Can Become" On Penn Ave. N. Tonight...

Afghan sewage truck leaking sewage, COP Arian, Afghanistan, blog post by John Hoff

Because I happened to hear about it on Facebook, an incident that happened tonight on the 2600 block of Penn Ave. N. will be immortalized here in the blogosphere even though nobody was killed by gunfire. Here is what happened according to an account by Penn Ave. N. resident Jeff Skrenes, as posted on Facebook...

City Of Minneapolis 311 Smart Phone App Reportedly Not Playing Nice With Android Phones...

YouTube Video embed, blog post by John Hoff

A few nights ago, proud new NoMi homeowner Jeff Skrenes was having a house warming party and wanted to show me his Minneapolis 311 smart phone app that he'd recently acquired. Wanting to spread word about the cool smart phone app, I decided to videotape Jeff's enthusiastic demonstration. Things didn't go exactly as planned, however...

"Hawthorne Hawkman" Buys 2601 Penn Ave. N., Pretty Little "Anchor House" In One Of The Toughest Stretches Of North Minneapolis Real Estate...

Photo from the Irving Inquisition, blog post by John Hoff

Jeff Skrenes, who took on the nickname "Hawthorne Hawkman" from a comment made by this blogger, who got his blogging start on this very blog, but then spun off and started the successful and influential "North By Northside" blog, is now a home owner...

Johnny Northside Blog and Friends Featured in The Line Publication

Photo and blog post by NoMi Passenger

The above photo of Johnny Northside was not taken this morning after reading this feature article in The Line. No, this above photo was taken this past summer, after Johnny collected $50 off a winning political wager, plus an extra $10 for delayed payment and, well, because the losing bet was such a loser it just made sense to kick in some extra bucks to regain any shred of credibility after making such a god awful bet...

But the reaction captured above is pretty much the reaction many of us bloggers and blog readers are having this morning after seeing local journalist Anna Pratt's coverage of some of the northside blogs and the impact they are having on the revitalization efforts and conversational climate of the northside. (Notice I say *some*, there are several more northside blogs doing their own thing towards their cause that aren't mentioned in Anna's article)

The daily life of northside activists can be hectic and stressful and involves absorbing a more than fair share of blows. Learning of delays to neighborhood or city projects, finding out a notorious slumlord now owns the house a few doors down, taking in the blight of boarded and dilapidated buildings, swerving suddenly in a frustrated panic because a punk in all dark clothing is walking in the middle of the street at night and you almost clipped his hip with the bumper of your car. Political enemies filing another frivolous lawsuit in attempts to discourage and distract and dissolve your focus and efforts. Etc. Etc. Etc.

So when a little pat on the back encouragement comes our way, a little sign from the universe that all the hours spent doing and doing and doing AND THEN blogging about the doing just might in fact be creating change, well, it's a moment to share and savor.

Good job, NoMi Homies.

JSPAN VIDEO COVERAGE! City Council Resolution Honoring Dr. William Green

Video by John Hoff, (using borrowed camera) blog post by John Hoff

Today I was in City Council Chambers, and I was fortunate to catch an awards ceremony for Dr. William Green, the outgoing superintendent of the Minneapolis Public School system. Jeff Skrenes (the Hawthorne Hawkman) had a video camera handy, and I captured this footage with Jeff's camera, which Jeff promptly posted to his YouTube profile.

I Give You Robert Serr, Of Miami Restaurant Douchebag Fame...

Blog post by John Hoff

It was more than a month ago when somebody contacted me through my blog, telling me some very interesting things about a guy named Robert Serr, who is heavily involved with North Minneapolis real estate through an entity called United Federal Properties LLC. Here is a link to a website, which was turned up by searching a phone number linked to Robert Serr.

http://unitedfederalpropertiesllc.com/For%20Sale.html

The "UK Office" and "US Office" is a nice touch, don't you think? Note that the US office is located in the fictional town of "Minnepolis."

I should point out that both the title of this blog post and the sentence above come, verbatim, from some of expressive emails which have been circulating behind the scenes, discussing Robert Serr and United Federal Properties, and the impact on North Minneapolis...

"Hawthorne Hawkman" Jeff Skrenes--whose eyes light up with delight at the word "spread sheet," it's sick, I tell you--put together a very interesting document with data about the various properties linked to Robert Serr, click here to obtain a copy of that document.

To most people, Robert Serr is best known for his involvement in the "Restaurant Miami," which used to be on Lake Street, and had a Miami Vice theme. The attitude of folks revitalizing Lake Street (God bless 'em!) appeared to be "Good riddance" when it came to Restaurant Miami going away.

Expect more coverage in the future here on Johnny Northside Dot Com about Robert Serr. Hopefully, this coverage will be pushed forward mostly by the Hawthorne Hawkman, who is much better at the spreadsheet...thing. However, in behind-the-blog discussions, the Robert Serr conversation has reached a kind of critical mass (plus we apparently ironed up some data space issues with the PDF support site) and suddenly, on Memorial Day 2010, it was time to let readers know:

Another dubious real estate baron has hit the radar of Johnny Northside Dot Com. Pull up a lawn chair to your laptop, and watch the fun and fireworks as things develop.

To any and all public officials trying to help turn around North Minneapolis: please, examine the data on the spreadsheet. Something very fishy appears to be happening here.

It could be "legitimate flipping," but does it SMELL that way?

Man Tries To Enter Alisha Neely Funeral With A Gun...

Video by Don Allen, blog post by John Hoff
ADDENDUM: February 6, 2011. This blog post was written before I and many others in North Minneapolis discovered what a disreputable con man character Don Allen is. I would advise anybody: Do not trust Don Allen. Seek further information about Don Allen from various online sources before having any contact with him.

Don Allen called me up and threatened litigation for the embedding of this video in this blog post. To which I respond, you put it on YouTube with an embed code. It is merely linked through the embed code. As of today, I am re-posting this blog post.

Don Allen of IBNN was at the Alisha Neely funeral, and captured this video of a guy packing a pistol who tried to enter the funeral, and got frisked...up against the very vehicle which was prepared to carry Neely's casket, by the looks of it. A disturbing and deeply symbolic moment. One commenter on this blog asked what 60 some kids were doing at a party after curfew anyway? This was a massive breakdown in parental supervision. Any neighbors who witnessed the party and DID NOT call 911 on all those minors out after curfew should also consider themselves morally culpable. (One person who claims to be a neighbor and commented on this blog says they didn't see or hear anything)

Since Don Allen's blog doesn't have the same kind of comments function as Johnny Northside Dot Com...and captures a different reader demographic...I wanted to share the amazing video here, with thanks to Don Allen for putting it on YouTube so quickly.

Yesterday, while I was taking a drive with Jeff Skrenes, good ol' Jeff talked about the possibility of going to the funeral. I told Jeff, "Are you kidding? That funeral is going to be full of thugs, and there have already been incidents around the memorializing of her death. You should stay away."

This is me telling Jeff "I told you so." But I kind of hope he went anyway, and maybe collected some pictures and commentary. One thing I have suggested needs to change in North Minneapolis: uncooperative witnesses are unacceptable, particularly those laying on the ground with bullet wounds, refusing to identify their attacker. Maybe the answer is to start hauling them in front of grand juries.

Blog Upgraded, Thanks For The PayPal Donation!

Stock Photo By John Hoff

So, this morning, I was trying to upload a photo of Local D'Lish store owner Ann Yinn posing with some used egg cartons--which she collects for local farmers markets--and the technical guts of my blog screamed something I'd never heard before. I WAS OUT OF PHOTO STORAGE SPACE.

Yes, this blog puts out so much image content that we've surpassed the "free space limits" of Blogspot! As you may have noticed...

I believe EVERY POST MUST HAVE A PICTURE, even if it's just a stock photo. Furthermore, this blog goes to tremendous lengths to get photographs, whether that means crawling across the surface of a not-quite-frozen lake, or purchasing cheap "gangster cams" to replace yet another low-cost, broken camera--or borrowing the cameras of friends like Megan Goodmundson, Jeff Skrenes (the Hawthorne Hawkman) or Connie Nompelis. (No-bell-iss, it's Greek)

Also, many readers have contributed photos, too many to list. Thank you, JNS blog readers.

In any case, for a relatively low sum of money, I managed to purchase 20 gigabytes of data space for photos. (To give you some idea of how much that is, apparently this blog was already using 1 "gig" when we ran out of space this morning)

Thankfully, this blog recently received a $25 donation through PayPal, which I want to gratefully acknowledge.

More Photos--"The Devil's Brothel" Goes Down At 3020 6th St. N., NoMi Activists Celebrate With Sausage, Vodka, And Hula Hooping!

Photos By John Hoff and Jeff Skrenes, post by John Hoff

Above, Housing Director Jeff Skrenes holds a hula hoop in front of the demolition of 3020 6th St. N.

Yes, I realize this blog has a tendency to report demolition in extensive detail. There are reasons for this.

First of all, NoMi neighborhood activists fight so long against certain problem properties--places with a fatal combination of decrepit structure combined with criminal thugs--that when the Backhoe of Doom finally arrives, we can't get enough of watching in delight or, as Commander Mike Martin put it so well, "reveling" in the demolition. (Of course, the "delight" is mixed with regret in this case. The house at 3020 6th St. N. could have been a renovation success story before the unsolved arson ruined that possibility)

But on to the second reason for the obsessive demolition coverage:

Though this blog always writes for a CURRENT audience, we also write for the history books. Right now, our neighborhood is being massively transformed, as houses which stood for a hundred years get demolished or--hopefully, and more often--get snapped up by a new wave of enthusiastic owner occupants. Some day, the current generation of children will have their own children and grandchildren in NoMi, and they will be curious about what once stood at the home where they reside. They will be FASCINATED to learn it was the devil's own brothel, or a beautiful historic home tragically fallen on hard times and (quite arguably) prematurely demolished.

So, keeping in mind that 3020 6th St. N. stood for a hundred years and then went down in mere hours, here is more of the story-in-pictures of yesterday's demolition...

Moments before the demolition, one of the workers makes measurements for plastic sheeting to cover the loads of haz mat coming from the house.

Would you like fries with that? A mysterious order of fries was on the ground as the workman measured out the plastic sheeting.

As the house was torn apart, we saw a toilet hanging at a sideways angle. I asserted the toilet was made out of steel, like a prison toilet, but another bystander said it was standard porcelain, covered with soot from the fire. I couldn't believe the guy running the backhoe let the toilet hang there and hang there. I would have been all, like, WOO!!! SMASH THE POTTY!!!

This photo gives a better idea of where the toilet was during the demolition. When you watch a building get demolished, you get caught up in the fate of individual objects, whether it's a bathroom mirror or a historic trunk, tragically and needlessly smashed at the house of Pauline Fjelde, despite the feeble efforts of a toothless and cowardly Heritage Preservation Commission.

When consuming champagne in a public street, it is very important to make sure you cover the bottle with a paper bag. I offered Commander Mike Martin a drink, but he declined.

The faces of two little Hmong children watch in a window, fascinated with the demolition. Unlike the little face which watched the demolition of Pauline Fjelde's house, the lives of these children will be made better by the demolition, not worse.

Knock knock, who's there?

Tyrone Jaramillo of the Jordan Neighborhood--pictured in his van next to Hawthorne Housing Director Jeff Skrenes--came by to see if any scrap metal could be salvaged at the demo site, but went away empty-handed. He was still in a cheerful mood to see our neighborhood making progress.

Detail of Tyrone's steering wheel.

The demolition site was fenced off due to asbestos danger.

Water used to keep dust down at the site made this oddly-beautiful scene. Look at all that scrap metal. There has to be a better, more environmentalist way to do these demolitions in the so-called "Eco Village."

Workmen use plastic sheeting to cover the load of Haz Mat. Gee, what if we used biodegradable corn starch plastic instead of petroleum-based plastic?

The Backhoe of Doom stands on the spot where one drug addict after another knocked on the door.

Taking a break from watching the demolition, Jeff and I went to the house of "the Polish lady" and her husband for our traditional "demolition day" meal of Polish sausage. Above, "Andy the Sausage Maker" poses proudly with an advertisement in the "Northeaster" community newspaper, which features his likeness.

Andy is kind of a "sausage maker rock star," an expert artisan whose medium is meat. This Christmas, he made over a thousand pounds of sausage for his employer. If you want to try the great Polish sausages that folks in the Eco Village rave about, Andy works at Sentyrz Liquor and Supermarket in Northeast, click here for more info.

Above, the ad in Northeaster which made Andy proud. The ad features greetings in Polish.

Above, Jeff enjoys Polish sausage with Polish mustard on Polish bread. This is the first time we sat down and ate our "demolition sausage" with a plate and silver wear. Usually we just gnaw it cold for breakfast while walking around, checking progress in the Eco Village. (Fortunately, the sausage is just as delicious cold as it is hot!)

Andy served us this amazing and unique vodka. Zubrowka vodka is flavored with something called "bison grass" which grows in the last bit of untouched, primeval forest in--so the bottle says--all of Europe. The forest is known as the "North Podlasie Lowland" in the region of Bialowieza. This aromatic plant resists cultivation and must be harvested by hand in the wild. What a perfect Eco Village drink! (Here's a link to one of the Eco Village planting projects)

The aromatic flavor is amazing, complex and very complimentary to the vodka, unlike so many newfangled flavored vodkas where the flavor appears to have little resonance with the vodka itself. In fact, this vodka barely tasted like vodka. The aromatic plant which flavored the alcohol (and gave it a subtle olive hue) seemed to create a wholly new and different drink. Andy brings this stuff all the way from a Polish neighborhood in Chicago. If you can get your hands on some of this stuff, give it a try. You won't be disappointed.

Our meal also featured Tyskie Polish beer and Polish mustard. Even the bread was Polish. Andy brings many of these items from Chicago because he can't obtain them locally. The connection this couple maintains to their native land is amazing. Even their television was tuned to a channel in Poland. Jeff said the beer was fantastic and, "If it wasn't, I would not hesitate to let you know."

"The Polish lady," pictured above, is locally famous for her gardening skills. Mayor Rybak has toured her garden during a visit to the Eco Village. In the winter, she pages through her seed catalogs and dreams of her next garden.

The Polish lady is very dedicated to her Roman Catholic faith. In the picture above, note the "Black Madonna of Czestochowa," Poland's most revered icon.

After dinner, Jeff played with the Polish couple's big Huskie, named Miko. They also have a small "back up dog" named Sparky. Jeff asserts that a big, fierce-but-lovable dog combined with a smaller "back up dog" is the perfect canine combination.

Now there's a cool dog toy: A rubber beer can. A dog could learn a valuable fetching skill from a toy like that!

Above, Jeff tests our ongoing hypothesis: there is no family-friendly way to pose with a Polish sausage. As you can see from the photo above, the thesis is still solid.

Yup, the thesis is still solid.

Today, I went to the demolition site and rubble was still being hauled away. But on the public sidewalk, I found half a brick.

I picked up the broken brick and took it with me to add to my ever-growing North Minneapolis brick collection as a war trophy.

Yesterday was a bittersweet victory. But the battle to transform and revitalize North Minneapolis continues.

3020 6th St. N Goes Down At Last--!

Today 3020 6th St. N. went down. This place was a notorious house of prostitution and drugs and the subject of frequent posts on this blog, not to mention getting plenty of coverage in the upcoming Adventures of Johnny Northside movie. The demolition was witnessed by...

...myself, former Hawthorne Neighborhood Chair Peter Teachout, Jeff Skrenes (the Hawthorne Neighborhood Housing Director) and Jordan resident Megan Goodmundson. As reported in an earlier blog post, myself and Jeff Skrenes did the "hula by proxy" to commemorate the words of Joyanne Teachout, who said she felt like "doing the hula" in happiness at the evacuation of the "Apartment Complex of Anarchy," which was just down the street. Champagne was also consumed at the scene, in a brown paper bag to keep it legal legal, especially since Fourth Precinct Commander Mike Martin pulled up at the scene.

Unlike the recent and tragic demolition of the Pauline Fjelde house in South Minneapolis, the house at 3020 6th St. North was relatively insubstantial and broke apart like crispy kindling. At one point, a toilet was sideways as though mounted on a wall. Carpeting hung from the newly-split-level layout like a massive stage drape, and the carpet looked like it was pretty nasty even BEFORE the arson.

The crews at the sight informed us the house was considered "haz mat" due to the arson, and put plastic wrapping around the truckloads of debri leaving the sight. One of the crew members informed us that doing a demolition this way--with the haz mat precautions--costs three times as much.

At one point, Jordan resident Tyrone Jaramillo showed up, hoping to get some scrap metal, but had no luck in that regard. (On a side note, Tyrone is a wholesome and honest scrapper with a wife and three kids. If you know of scrap metal needing to be cleaned up, get in touch with Tyrone. The Jaramillos also put on one great Christmas dinner!)

In the window of a house next door, two small Hmong children watched the backhoe in fascination.

The highlight of the day may have been some of the words of Mike Martin, Commander of the Fourth Precinct, who said he came by just to "revel" in the demolition of 3020 6th St. N.

Martin said, only half-jokingly, that the plunging crime rate was going to put him out of a job. I responded to Martin and said something along the lines of, well, what about white collar crime, like mortgage fraud? What about terrorism and theft of intellectual property such as DVD piracy? Hey, once we get all the violent street crime under control, there are still big swathes of crime needing the time of police officers. In fact, the officers will require MORE TRAINING and, being more specialized, will make more money.

The whole time we spoke, the Backhoe of Doom roared in the background.

Later, Jeff and myself went to the house of "the Polish woman" and her husband, who treated us to Polish beer, Polish vodka, and Polish sausage on Polish bread. (There was a theme with the meal, as you may have noticed) Consuming Polish sausage during demolitions in the Eco Village has become a kind of tradition with Jeff and I, though Jeff remarked this was the first time we did it inside, sitting down, with silver wear and plates instead of gnawing the sausage outside.

Yes, I told Jeff, things are really looking up in the Eco-Village.

Paul Koenig Fails To Respond On The Record To Three Simple Questions About Pamiko Properties Scandal...

In the photo above, Jeff Skrenes--The Hawthorne Hawkman--uses bar glasses to demonstrate a point about Paul Koenig and two lines of credit covering many of the same properties. Not shown in photo: me losing consciousness as Jeff makes his scintillating observations about interest rates.

In any case...

In the last couple days, Paul Koenig--whose Pamiko Properties fiasco has been exclusive blog candy for JNS readers lo, these many days and now Christmas, too, woo hoo--spoke to a third party about the oh-so-negative coverage he has received recently right here on Johnny Northside Dot Com. This third party assumed informal intermediary role between this blog and Paul Koenig. It seemed for a while like Koenig wanted to tell things from his side...

Well, this blog is always happy to print the responses of individuals and/or corporations which this blog has criticized, either in a blog post or by providing a fair, reasonably open comments forum. So if Paul Koenig would only make some kind of PUBLIC response, I'd be happy to publish it.

Well, word comes about how Paul Koenig DID respond to my email and three pointed questions, however, he forwarded the response to the third party with great big OFF THE RECORD caveats on the lengthy email. Well, what am I supposed to do with THAT, Paul, you horse-hugging slumlord dirt bag? I prefer to not even tread near something that would involve violating "off the record" confidentiality.

Anyway, dear readers, here is the email I forwarded to Paul Koenig yesterday with the three questions he refuses to answer ON THE RECORD.

Let the reader judge whether this man is a bad character who has victimized our neighborhood.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Paul Koenig via (name of third party)

My understanding is you will get answers to these questions back to me by noon tomorrow. I will publish the questions and answers verbatim, without commentary within that individual blog post. (Of course, readers are still free to add their commentary)

If you don't answer the questions, that's fine, I will just publish the unanswered questions and say what I will. Nor is this email itself secret or confidential. I'm NOT going "off the record" with you.

But Paul, I will be very happy to publish your side of things, verbatim. Frankly, it's good and informative blog content, even if I may personally disagree with or doubt what you're saying. Plus I'm sincerely interested in your side of things, and so are my readers.

Here are the questions. They are easy. There are only three.

1.) Tell me your side of things, in detail, at length.

2.) Why is there so much crossover between these various properties and on
the lines of credit?

3.) Why do we see this pattern of a foreclosure only a few months after
modification and increase in the credit line?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So that is where things stand, with Paul Koenig refusing to respond on the record, and the questions hanging in the air like a joke which falls flat.

Happy Holidays from the Johnny Northside Blog!

Guest post and photos by the Hawthorne Hawkman

A few commenters have asked if this blog will let up on the Koenigs as some sort of Christmas truce, and more readers have objected to that idea. I say that as long as we're still feeling the effects of the Koenigs housing ventures, be it fraud or just bad business, we don't let up.

But that doesn't mean NoMi friends can't have a little fun. Pictured above is John's Christmas present, made by Ken Farkash, and given by Connie Nompelis and myself. It's a piece titled...

"Frog Man." As soon as Connie and I saw this at the 42nd Avenue Station display, we knew it belonged to John. In talking to Ken, we were told it was actually INSPIRED by him, and so we picked it up for him right away.

When we presented this to John, he picked up the reference right away to his frog-hauling stints as a truck driver. He caught further symbolism in his military background, as the "frog men" are often sent in to do dangerous work clearing out an area for the rest of the operation. I don't know if Ken intended for that to be part of the painting/sculpture; if not, it's a sign of quality art. I always enjoy works that stick with the viewer perhaps differently than even the creator of the art intended - like French Impressionist pieces or Catherine Zeta-Jones' laser scenes in "Entrapment."

On a personal note, I'm always torn about how to address the various holidays around this time of year. "Happy Holidays" seems so bland, but "Merry Christmas," "Happy Hanukkah," or whatever you say about Solstice seems somewhat exclusive. But I think there's a holiday that really encompasses what the JNS blog is all about: Festivus.

Consider this: We've got a Festivus pole, the airing of grievances, a Festivus meal, and feats of strength:

And look! When I click "Publish post," it actually publishes the post! It's a Festivus miracle!

Happy Festivus from the rest of us at JNS!

2222 4th Ave. N. To Be Demolished...

Photos by Jeff Skrenes

Word came first from Jeff Skrenes, the "Hawthorne Hawkman," and was confirmed by an email from Council Member Hofstede which was forwarded by Hawthorne resident Michael Klick.

The house at 2222 4th Ave. N. will be demolished. The council voted today, unanimously. This property is virtually cursed...

It was the place where the dead, frozen body of Annshalike Hamilton was discovered. This murder is still unsolved and anybody with information should contact the Minneapolis Police Department.

Attempts have been made to rehab and rehabilitate the property, but the attempts were slum-lordy and half-hearted, not meeting the standards of the neighborhood or public officials. Apparently, when Mahmood Khan bought his properties, he was under the impression North Minneapolis operated something like the "Wild West" and he could get away with having crappy rental properties left to sit for months and years.

These photos were taken just hours ago by Jeff Skrenes, to show the current condition of the property. Compare with, for example, this image from some time ago, click here.

Wannabe slumlords can look at the example of Mahmood Khan and 2222 4th Ave. N. and take note: this slumlord stuff no longer flies in North Minneapolis, particularly in the Hawthorne Neighborhood.

Standards Are Slipping For Shoes On Power Lines...

Yesterday, Jeff Skrenes (the Hawthorne Hawkman) and I went out and took a bunch of illegal signs off utility poles, which resulted in a festival of bloggy videography. (And when I say "festival," you better believe there's a pinata involved)

While going after the signs, we came upon a pair of shoes kind of, sort of hanging on a power line. The shoes were actually...

...on the power pole "guy wire," and not the power line itself. They weren't very high up, so it was a relatively easy matter to push them down with a broomstick and undo the laces.

I didn't know whether to be happy or a little sad to see the standards for "shoefiti" slipping so much.

"These Are Scammers And Predators And We're Going To Take Their Signs Down"

This was the first video made by Jeff and I documenting our removal of illegally-placed signs on utility poles in the Hawthorne Neighborhood. Because it is our first video, it's a little awkward and, well, the sign actually flies off the pole--sails like a paper airplane--and hits me in the face. Imitating Marsha Brady from the Brady Bunch, I say, "Oh, my nose!"

Like I mentioned in the video...this is how tragedies happen.

Knocking Down Utility Pole Signs (Let's Have That One Stuffed And Mounted!)

Sign, sign, everywhere a sign...

Oh, wait, that's not true anymore. Anyway, here's more fun "knocking down utility pole signs" from the Hawthorne Neighborhood, featuring Jeff Skrenes, a.k.a. the Hawthorne Hawkman.

(Do not click "Read More")

New Party Game Invented In NoMi--UTILITY POLE SIGN PINATA!

Pulling up boulevard signs and burning them was fun for a while, but it started to grow old...so me and Jeff Skrenes (the Hawthorne Hawkman) invented a new activity.

Utility pole sign pinata!

In this video, Jeff demonstrates pretty decent pinata marksmanship. Except, like innumerable other online pinata videos...

Jeff keeps WHACKING at the pinata even after the candy has fallen out, and the other kids are scrambling for it.

But that's OK, because I got most of the candy.

What can we do NEXT to illegal boulevard and utility pole signs?

I'm thinking...water boarding.
