The impact of social media in the form of aggressive blogging was proven in this campaign, with City Council Member Barb Johnson overwhelmingly crushing the campaign of upstart amateur challenger Kris Brogan.

A factor in the race was The Brogan Files, an anonymous blog which appeared in March of this year and made trashing Kris Brogan its mission in life. Because the blog discussed Northside issues, JNS blog added Brogan Files to our "blog roll," giving the blog exposure to our 3,000 daily page views. (1980s heavy metal "rock on" gesture with tongue extended)

The Brogan Files was ugly, bare-knuckle politics by SOMEBODY (the author of the blog is still unknown) and it appears to have worked overwhelmingly. There was never any serious doubt Barb Johnson would win the race, but the enduring lesson of the Brogan Files was apparently DO NOT DARE TO CHALLENGE BARB JOHNSON IN AN ELECTION OR YOU WILL GET MESSED UP...

Ward 4 City Council Incumbent Barb Johnson Gets DFL Nomination On First Ballot, According To Facebook Chatter..

It is being widely reported on Facebook forums that Barb Johnson, who represents Ward 4 on the Minneapolis City Council and is the council president, has won the all-important DFL nomination. Word is this happened on the first ballot.

Barb Johnson, who was widely expected to face no candidate at all in the race since Troy Parker didn't appear to be running, was facing a candidate named Kris Brogan who has no qualifications worth noting other than residency. A blog called The Brogan Files appears to have made an impact on the race, arguably reducing Brogan to a marginal candidate who didn't appear qualified to hold office. The authorship of the blog remains unknown.

It is unknown if Brogan will continue in the race despite the (reported) drubbing at the DFL convention or if she will wisely drop out. Given how effective The Brogan Files has been in the fate of this council race, JNS Blog believes we will see a continued "blogification" of city council races in the future.

Kris Brogan (who I've never heard of outside of city council races) is the only candidate foolish enough to run against City Council President Barb Johnson and may God have mercy on Brogan's soul. Former "candidate for everything" Troy Parker has apparently learned a lifetime of hard lessons and doesn't appear to be running for anything at the moment.

Very disheartening for bloggers, I might add, but the fees for Minneapolis political races went up recently and, well, I'm just saying.
