Interesting Jail Roster Data On The "Bored Shooter" Malo D. Gomez Of 3341 Oliver Ave. N.

Mug shot, therefore public domain, blog post by John Hoff

First of all, I would like to know WHO THE HELL NAMES THEIR KID "MALO GOMEZ?"

In Spanish, "malo" means bad or evil, depending on the verb tense.

So if you were to say "estoy malo," it means "I am bad." "Estoy" is used for the "impermanent or lesser state of being." If you said "soy malo," it means "I am evil."

If "Malo" was your first name, you would always be saying, "Soy Malo."

At last, all that griping I do on the comment threads about grammar has finally found its way into the heart of a story.

In any case...

Malo Gomez, the 18-year-old who was "bored" and so he fired his pistol at two police in a squad car, is the subject of some very interesting jailhouse data...

Here is a list of all the charges against Malo Dashaunta Gomez, whose birthday is October 4, 1992.

HOWEVER, there's another Gomez on the jailhouse roster named Deshaunta Dmar Gomez. This "other Gomez" lives at the same address as the first Gomez, which is 3341 Oliver Ave. N., a rental owned by Kevin and Christine Stevenson of 1485 Creekside Drive, Waconia, MN 55387.

However, the "second Gomez" has a different birthday: August 6, 1993. That's just about 10 months after the "other Gomez."

Deshaunta Gomez has some serious charges, too, but not as many charges as the "first Gomez."

So what's going on, here? Are these the "same Gomez" using two identities? Or different individuals, most likely brothers?

It seems like the mainstream media is missing half the story. Meanwhile, by doing a little digging on the internet, these pieces are easily found all the way from where I sit in Afghanistan.

R.I.P. 2015 26th Ave. N.

Contributed photo, xoxo, blog post by John Hoff

Word reaches me in Afghanistan that 2015 26th Ave. N. was recently demolished, after being done in by the North Minneapolis tornado.

However, the long time homeowners are rebuilding on the same spot, and are curently in process of submitting rebuild plans through city and neighborhood approval process.

Tornado Renovation Reveals Old Window Space, Antique Wall Paper...

Photos by Megan Goodmundson, blog post by John Hoff

NoMi Citizen Megan Goodmundson, who has been repairing her storm damaged home with insurance proceeds, sent me these pictures in Afghanistan of her post-tornado home renovations.

Ripping into storm damaged walls revealed...

A space where there used to be a window, hidden beneath the paneling. Megan decided to spend some extra money and restored the former window with lovely leaded glass. (See top photo, middle photo shows the discovery of the window space)

Renovations also revealed what may be the original wallpaper of the old bungalow. (Bottom photo)

As bad as the tornado was, Megan's house will actually be NICER when all the repairs are completed.

New Shake Menu At Bangkok Market, And "Thanks For Your Service" From The Owner...

My girlfriend Megan Goodmundson videotaped this "thanks for your service" message from the owner of Bangkok Market in the Hawthorne Neighborhood. In the video, the owner refers to Megan as my wife, no doubt because we've spent so much time there, together, enjoying his good food. We are not, in fact, married.

When Johnny comes marching home again, I am looking forward to enjoying all the many treats at Bangkok Market, especially the "pig organ stew."

Let me tell you, it's pretty much impossible to get pig organ stew in Afghanistan.

On the other side of the world, I'm excited to learn from Megan that Bangkok Market has a whole new shake menu.

WHEN I GET BACK TO THE WORLD, (so many soldier thoughts begin with those words) I can picture myself going to Bangkok Market one day, and ordering the first three shakes on the menu. The next day, three more. The final day, the final three shakes.

Little things like that keep you going in Afghanistan: knowing there is a world full of comfort and yummy treats just a day's jet travel beyond the cloud of dust that hangs over the jagged mountains.

Johnny Northside Blog Says "Buh Bye" To Trolls For One Month, Maybe Longer...

Contributed photo, blog post by John Hoff

Since the very beginning of this blog, I have tolerated a great degree of dissent in the comments section, even allowing anonymous comments that viciously attack me from every angle. Some comments, attacking my son, my girlfriend, my country, my uniform....these comments go too far and I don't publish them.

And yet, in an attempt to allow as much discourse as possible on issues of public concern, I've gone so far as to publish PORTIONS of a comment, or to say that a comment has been rejected. This allows the commenter to reformulate and resubmit their comment, and maybe get it published.

Well, as of September 11, 2011, with several anonymous trolls attacking my uniform, my service and even this great country, I've decided to drastically revise my policies about tolerating trolls.

Call it, if you will, "virtual national security."

For a period of one month, and perhaps even longer depending on the results, this blog will no longer...

...publish comments that might be characterized as "shallow, stupid and anonymous." And I will apply this policy loosely rather than strictly. If I don't feel like publishing your comment, I just won't.

This change in policy has been a long time coming. I've been urged by other NoMi bloggers--some of whom I inspired to blog in the first place--to apply such a policy. It has been pointed out the "spirit of the forum" gets poisoned by these prolific trolls who, like the borderline mental patients who show up at public forums and seize control of the microphone, impact everybody's feelings about the forum and whether they want to participate.

People become afraid to stand up and speak, particularly in their own name, out of fear they will be viciously attacked as well.

At certain public forums, like city council meetings, incredibly broad latitude of speech should be tolerated. However, at privately-funded forums, I think the folks who are buying the potato chips, diet Coke, and the electricity for the microphone have a right to say, "Hey, stinky bum speaking in word salad. Your turn to speak is completely up and now we're going to ask you to leave, because you're scary and we rented the church basement for the night, and we don't want you here."

Freedom of ASSOCIATION is part of the First Amendment. If you are forced to publish somebody else's commentary, then you don't really have free speech because you are saying things you don't want to say. If free speech is anything, it's the right to say what you think.

For a couple of years, now, I've provided a "free microphone" where all kinds of people come and speak--including those who pour out their anonymous venom--but there comes a point when it's time to show the door to the stalker mental patients with the anti-Johnny obsession who are even willing to say how much they hate America.

Everything I've seen leads me to believe the trolls have their own forums--including the Star Tribune, where lack of conscientious forum moderation has led to an environment that is not fun for the vast majority of participants. Most Star Tribune forum discussions turn into the same tired voices who blame democrats, unions and black people for pretty much everything.

Therefore...

On blog posts dated from September 11, 2011 to October 11, 2011, I will no longer publish or acknowledge comments that are shallow, stupid and anonymous. The trolls are, for now, free to be stupid and anonymous on blog posts for OTHER DATES, but we shall see how long THAT tolerance lasts.

If the trolls who want to comment so badly (in every sense of the phrase) will obtain blogspot profiles and speak in their own names or through profiles that can be linked to real people then I will strongly consider publishing their commentary--even if they feel like attacking America on September 11, as several trolls did the other day, along with attacking me personally for wearing my country's uniform.

As of yesterday, I don't have a problem publishing comments that are "shallow and stupid" and attacking everything from me to my son to my girlfriend to the armed forces, but hell if such comments will also be ANONYMOUS.

Therefore, blog posts dated September 11 to October 11 of this year should be considered "safe" for non-troll commenters. Other blog posts may be a "free speech free fire zone" (for the most part) but 9/11 to 10/11 are off limits to trolls.

I am very interested to see what happens to the blog commentary if my loyal readers know trolls won't be allowed to attack what they are saying in response to blog posts. If I decide the commentary is flourishing due to the lack of trolls, and there is a "net gain of free speech," then I will extend the anti-troll policy.

If there is no tangible result, I may go back to saying "What the hell" and publishing the commentary of the trolls, even if they want to say anti-American things on September 11.

And so the experiment begins...

The Adventures Of Johnny Guardsman Blog Goes Public, 9/11/2011, 9:11 AM

Photo by an Afghan brother-in-arms, blog post by John Hoff

Normally, I write a blog post, I hit the PUBLISH button, and that's it, except for going back and fixing typos.

I don't fool around with the time stamps on blog posts because I feel the electronic record of when a post was written is part of the factual information associated with the post. And this blog is infamous for its dedication to The Truth, ugly though it might be.

So I will make a point of truthfully telling you THIS blog post was actually written on September 8, 2011 but dated ahead for 9/11/11, at 9:11 AM.

I will be very busy that day. For one thing, being at a Forward Operating Base in Afghanistan, we will be extra concerned about threats, and extra preoccupied. I am also scheduled to see my reenlistment NCO, to sign up for another six years, along with a buddy of mine.

We have a wide window of time to reenlist--my current hitch isn't up until the end of this year long deployment--but we thought it would be cool for our reenlistment to be dated on the tenth anniversary of 9/11 while we are stationed in Afghanistan, knowing very well the date will make it into our DD 214s.

Also, the internet goes down for days at a time around here. And I really want this blog post to be dated September 11, whether or not the internet is working that day.

You see, I have been hiding something...

Another little blog project on the side, click here for Blog Utopia, a/k/a The Adventures of Johnny Guardsman.

At some point I realized that, as much as I feel the Johnny Northside blog is important to my neighborhood and should continue as my primary blogging effort, it is limited by its very nature to always be a LOCAL blog. And, though I have done it quite a few times, I do not care to commit further "unnatural blogging acts" by trying to wedge in stories about my many travel adventures, which are only tangentially related to North Minneapolis issues.

Also, the Johnny Northside blog is never going to make me rich. Heck, it's more likely to make me POOR, considering how often I have to defend lawsuits, cracked and ridiculous though they may be. (Don't worry, faithful readers, I'm just too stubborn and willful to ever stop blogging about North Minneapolis issues. Exhibit A: blogging from a mud and straw "qalat" in Afghanistan about North Minneapolis issues)

But I wish to make some money blogging--or at least revel in free meals, free trips and free samples--as well as produce commentary on national and even global issues. I'd like to get a bigger audience and have a bigger impact.

Ultimately, the focus of Blog Utopia will be consumer culture, but for now I'm in Afghanistan, so I will write about Afghanistan.

During the time I am deployed and right after, it is right and fitting that I should document some of the small human interest stories of deployment. Indeed, I will even manage to document consumer culture from the perspective of a deployed soldier, since this experience has exposed me to all kinds of interesting products I wouldn't normally encounter in the United States.

For the record, I am extraordinarily careful about operational security (OPSEC) which is one of the reasons I prefer to focus on consumer products and small human interest stories rather than my vantage point in the larger war effort. Those war stories may get told eventually--years from now, when our nation leaves Afghanistan--but now is not the time to tell those tales.

The Adventures of Johnny Guardsman blog will appear on my "blog roll," just like Hammers And High Heels, NoMi Passenger, North by Northside and other blogs that are relevant to North Minneapolis.

And so I hit the PUBLISH button, knowing for the first time it won't actually publish...

Until September 11, 2011.

God bless America and free speech.

Owner Of Storm Damaged House Says, "I Am Home And Will Protect..."

Contributed photo, xoxo, blog post by John Hoff

"Super Citizen" Megan Goodmundson took this picture while driving around in North Minneapolis, and forwarded it to me here in Afghanistan. Check out the board on the window to the left.

"I am home and will protect."

Truly a post-apocalyptic image and message.

Megan asked me, "Do you suppose he is advertising the catering business or just using the boards?"

My guess: Just using the boards. Or he would have posted some kind of contact info like an email or phone number.

Tootie's Boiled Peanuts At The West Broadway Farmers Market!

Photos by Megan Goodmundson, blog post by John Hoff

Tootie Martin--no relation to the Tootie's on Lowry Ave. N.--has been making appearances at the West Broadway Farmer's Market selling a Dixieland delicacy: boiled peanuts.

When I used to drive a truck in America instead of doing army duty in Afghanistan--where I currently find myself--I would just about live on boiled peanuts as soon as my truck crossed into the area considered the "Deep South." In Dixieland, boiled peanuts are sold at roadside stands, farmers markets, mom and pop convenience stores, and even major chains like Kangaroo and Cheetah.

(Um, we don't have those "major chains" up north)

Once upon a time, this is the way MOST peanuts were consumed: boiled while they were green, then eaten out of the wet, leathery shell.

If you've never had boiled peanuts, obviously you're wondering, "What do they taste like?"

Well, the closest way I can describe it would be...

..."peanut flavored mashed potatoes," in both taste and texture. They've very yummy. Even my son Alex, whose picky eating habits are legendary, tried a boiled peanut when he visited me during my R&R leave in on the Gulf Coast, and said boiled peanuts "tasted good."

Judging by the photos forwarded by Megan Goodmundson, the boiled peanuts at the West Broadway Farmers Market are being served hot. But some folks also serve the peanuts chilled, and they are good that way, too. One thing I've noticed is that the top of the container of peanuts is quite different than the bottom, because the peanuts come out very hot but don't seem to hold their heat long. For this reason, I usually buy a small container rather than a large container, even though the larger container is usually a better deal.

I prefer the "original flavor" boiled peanuts but "Cajun flavored" boiled peanuts are quite popular in the South. Tootie sells both original and Cajun flavor. He believes anybody who has eaten only gas station boiled peanuts hasn't really experienced boiled peanuts. To which I say: if your peanuts are BETTER than the gas station peanuts, they must be fantastic, because I love the gas station boiled peanuts.

Here's to entrepreneur Tootie Martin, who is bringing North Minneapolis a taste of Dixieland.

"Calls For Service" Examined Around Penn Gas Stop Before And After The North Minneapolis Tornado...

Contributed photo, xoxo, blog post by John Hoff

With the Penn Gas Stop ready to reopen after the North Minneapolis tornado, more than one neighbor is asking the question, "Were we better off with the Penn Gas Stop closed than we are with it open?"

One way to answer the question is to examine the 911 "calls for service" in the area right around the gas station before and after the tornado.

However, the answer appears to be YES WE WERE BETTER OFF WITH THE PENN GAS STOP CLOSED.

Here is the data. Let's look at it together...

Calls for service BEFORE the tornado. The date range is February 22 through May 21, 2011.

GRAND TOTAL OF CALLS AFTER TORNADO IS 26.

The conclusion is inescapable: 62 calls to 911 while the Penn Gas Stop was open. But only 26 calls when the gas station was closed.

The Penn Gas Stop attracts trouble. Despite its new ownership and recent remodel (oh, wow, cool bulletproof glass!) the business is just as much an "inconvenience store" as it ever was.

JNS BLOG EXCLUSIVE: Attorney Jill Clark Takes On Lawyers Board Of Professional Responsibility...

Stock photo, blog post by John Hoff

Attorney Jill Clark doesn't live in North Minneapolis but has involved herself in a number of North Minneapolis issues, including lawsuits against this blogger and rising to the defense of Pete "The Pedophile" Rickmyer, a notorious bane-in-the-backside to the Jordan Area Community Council. The decent people who live in North Minneapolis and want to improve their community always have to wonder, "What kind of crazy legal b.s. is Jill going to file next?" Of course, the City of Minneapolis has to wonder the same thing and has spent a fortune defending itself against Jill.

Oh, and her clients. But it's hard to tell. It feels more like Jill doing her own thing, and the clients be damned. Exhibit A: The "Old Majority" clients in the JACC case, who have been slapped with legal fees.

Now an interested "court watcher" has pointed this blogger in the direction of Jill's latest cases: taking on the Office of Lawyers Professional Responsibility on behalf of some allegedly bad lawyers. Here is the case information, as I found it in the online database...

The "board numbers" on these complaints--"2011-2," and "2011-1," tell us they were filed early in 2011. They were, in fact, the first two cases filed that year.

So, we have to wonder, who are the bad lawyers? Could it be Ben Myers, whose cocky head hasn't popped up in quite a while? Could it be Ben's law partner, Dokor? Ben AND his law partner? Could it be some lawyer whose shenanigans are unrelated to North Minneapolis politics, and therefore not that interesting to this blog?

Inquiring minds want to know. But of even more interest is the fact attorney Clark would take a case challenging--oh, my word!--the very body which dishes out lawyer dicipline in the State of Minnesota.

Those who speculate and opinionate about these matters have the following theory: one day in the very near future, Jill is going to find herself facing a series of well-crafted complaints against her filed with the Lawyer's Board of Professional Responsibility, mostly involving filing bogus legal crap. And Jill probably knows that.

So, just like Jill filed a lawsuit against City Councilman Don Samuels on behalf of Loon-At-Large Al Flowers after Flowers shoved Samuels at a public meeting--shoved Samuels in the back, while cameras were rolling, and the next day, incredibly, it was FLOWERS suing SAMUELS--the theory may be the best defense is a good offense.

Move quickly, RUN RUN RUN to put oneself in a position where any board dicipline can be spun as a political vendetta or payback for taking on these cases.

What a fascinating little web is being woven, here. Can anybody get to those case files and tell me more what they are about?

Joseph Obizor, (Not Pictured) Was Present At Hildbran Murder, Is Another Scumbag With A Criminal Record...

Mug shot, (therefore public domain) of Powell, one of the alleged killers of Hildbran, blog post by John Hoff

Joseph Ensha Obizor was present at the killing of Shabar T. Hildbran, 19, according to authorities and the Minneapolis Star Tribune--which spelled his last name "Obiazor," which is apparently incorrect based on extensive online court records.

Like the two men charged, as well as the man killed, Obizor has a criminal record. Here it is...

Given the fact Obizor was reportedly acting in concert with accused murders Powell and Hunter, but is not charged with murder, it seems likely that Obizor is now "state's witness." No criticism of Obizor is intended by this observation, indeed Obizor may be the sharpest tool in a shed of otherwise dull tools.

An Old Army Sleeping Bag, Tornado Tomatoes...NoMi Continues Its Storm Recovery

Contributed photo, blog post by John Hoff

Word reaches me all the way in Afghanistan that North Minneapolis gardens ravaged by the tornado in May are producing crops, (albeit traumatized crops) and that one of my Vietnam-era army sleeping bags has been put to good use in the course of renovation efforts...

Many of the tomatoes in North Minneapolis are rotting on the bottom, and only a few of the tomatoes are good. According to one online resource I located, click here, if a tomato touches the ground this will cause tomato rot. The soil is full of microbes and you don't want the soil to touch your tomatoes while they ripen on the vine.

Unfortunately, the tornado knocked many tomato vines to the ground. So those few tomatoes which did not touch the ground and are NOT rotting...these tomatoes are precious.

The rotten ones...those are "tornado tomatoes."

Now, about that army sleeping bag: some years ago, I was living in my 1979 Shasta RV on the mean, hard streets of the Marcy-Holmes neighborhood as well as a friend's backyard in St. Paul (near Frogtown) trying to save money and get myself established in the Twin Cities to be near my son. At one point, a veterans outreach officer visited me in my humble little abode, and gave me two or three army sleeping bags which appeared to be from the Vietnam era. (He had an inconvenient surplus of the bags, and urged me to pass the other bags along to anybody else in need)

I swear, one of those bags just about saved my life when winter came and I didn't quite have the arrangements finalized in the friend's backyard, where I could plug in a heater. And one of those sleeping bags--maybe the same one--made its way to a friend's house, and survived the NoMi tornado.

Recently, my friend decided to use the old sleeping bag during the course of extensive repairs and renovations. Some tornado victims refuse to leave their house vacant. That was when the old army sleeping bag once again came in handy.

Two good lessons to take away from this storm:

1.) After a storm that knocks down tomato vines, harvest your tomatoes. Even if they are green, you can have fried green tomatoes or make a nice green tomato salsa or chutney.

Leave those tomatoes on the vine after they've touched soil, and they will rot.

2.) Keep useful gear stashed away in case of disaster.

Military surplus gear is a lot cheaper than new equipment and frequently better.

Besides, though you may not know the "story behind the gear," you can be confident there's a story...and it's a good story of service, faith, and overcoming.
