In North Minneapolis it's not just the thugs that die. Every so often life has that single moment that takes your breath away and the old song comes to mind ‘’only the good die young.’’ Brandy Banks was one of the good ones……

Blog post by Jordan North…

Brandy Banks aspiring model.

Facebook photo, used under First Amendment Fair Comment and Criticism.
She attended MacPhail Center for Music, college, worked and had her own business until a REPEATED drunk driver allegedly took her life as he was traveling at over a hundred miles an hour. Did I mention he’s out on bail living in his Golden Valley home? Philip S. Bertelsen, you allegedly DRUNK buffoon. The good citizens of North Minneapolis will make sure justice is...

...served.

Mugshot, therefore public domain, blog post by Jordan North.

I will let Brandy’s words speak for themselves. Words that let us know some young people ''get it''.

Perhaps her thoughts on Baby Isaac Early getting shot.

She was loved, respected and embraced by so many in this community. I actually met her in downtown Minneapolis while shopping and I remember her. As much shopping as I do and the annoying sales people I encounter, that speaks volumes. Some people make such an impression you remember them. That was Brandy Banks.

The man who allegedly killed her was reportedly a drunk driver with 11 or more various, past offenses. Reports from local news stations claim he was going at speeds in excess of 100 MPH. Please see the link to the most recent court appearance where he
was let out with No bail. http://kstp.com/article/stories/s3410221.shtml   What can we do? What can I do? Let me tell you something very important. Are you paying attention?

You MUST write the honorable(cough,cough)

Judge William H. Koch and let him know that we are watching and waiting to see what value he places on the life of a GOOD and kind Minneapolis resident.

JNS Blog welcomes guest author "Jordan North."

The views of Jordan North are not necessarily...oh, you know what, I should put this into an actual article....

Johnny Northside! said...

And I will, later...

Good work, Jordan North. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

OK, on another note: I know it's a stretch, but can anybody determine if the Bertelson accused in this vehicular homicide is in any way related to Paul Bertelson, the "low end landlord" who owns the property on Colfax Ave. N. where five of the children of Troy Lewis perished?

Johnny Northside! said...

I guess this one in the accident spells his name "Bertelsen." Doesn't matter to me. I've seen spelling variants among people that are cousins so I still want to know if there's a relationship, or is it just a coincidence that when people die in the neighborhood there's a high probability of somebody named "Bertelson" (spell it as you please) being somehow connected or involved.

ON ANOTHER NOTE, it is the habit of THIS blogger to say "Honorable" when referring to judges, and to say it without sarcasm. But this blog hosts guest authors, commenters, and so forth. This is where the rubber meets the road on my comment, "The views of Jordan North may not necessarily be the views of...etc. and etc."

I will also add: This is what happens when people can't have their views heard on North Vent. They might find their way over here. I do not mean that as any harsh criticism of North Vent. I love North Vent and what it's doing. But you can't make 100 percent of the people 100 percent happy 100 percent of the time. And a certain percent of the time, unhappy with one place, they go to another.

JNS blog is glad to have guest author Jordan North. Let's hope for something productive and prolific and not a passing trend.

I read through the court document from this case and they have his name and D.O.B. listed as:

"State of Minnesota, COMPLAINT Plaintiff, Order of Detention vs. PHILIP SCOTT BERTELSEN DOB: 11/14/1958 8640 WINSDALE STREET NORTH GOLDEN VALLEY, MN 55427 Defendant"

I'm going to see what else I can find on this tool and if he is any relation to the other tool, with a similar spelling.

Thanks for the warm welcome. (cough)

One participant in the North Vent forum reports on that forum she received an email from the judge. JNS blog has copied and pasted the email, as shared on North Vent, and here it is:

I received your email concerning my bail determination regarding Philip Scott Bertelsen, who appeared before me for his First Appearance on April 23. I know you are upset about my decision. While ethical rules prevent me from commenting on pending cases, I want you to know I hear and understand your concerns.

My Conditional Release Order is a public document, as is the Complaint in this case. They can both be reviewed at one of our courthouses free of charge through various kiosks. Information about the case is also available through the Minnesota Courts Information System (MNCIS) website, although you cannot access the document images on-line. Public access is available through: http://pa.courts.state.mn.us/default.aspx. Mr. Bertelsen's case number is 27-CR-14-11163. You can also search his name through that website and confirm he does not have any prior criminal record (it will show a Petty Misdemeanor offense from 2008 for failing to signal a turn, but a Petty Misdemeanor is not a criminal offense).

Sincerely,

Bill Koch

Bertelsen was driving 107 mph at .18 BAC? Of course, there were no cops around because they were busy booking somebody else for driving 50 mph at .08.

Johnny Northside! said...

The cops can't be everywhere. And somebody who is driving with less alcohol in their system who hits somebody at a lower rate of speed can kill that person just as dead as somebody with more booze and more speed. A lot of it is just luck of the draw. I say God Bless MPD, God Bless The Fourth Precinct.

When a person is in a blackout from any substance and doesn't remember shit and causes deaths, deserves the book thrown at them. R.I.P. Beautiful Souls.

This could have been my child or my family just sitting at a light. One hundred miles an hour gave them no chance. He deserves no chance.

Koch was the judge in my divorce 5 years ago. During this time I came to find him to be very incompetent. I'm not shocked by this, he's a complete moron, and always tends to give the wrong people a '100th chance to change things' RIP Beautiful souls

It's as amazement that even an incompetent judge would let this man slide. This monster killed TWO people that night! Last i heard, that was double vehicular homicide!

It stated that Bertelsen's sentencing or next step was on May 20. What's the update? Also, there is an event in memory on June 8, 4-6pm, at Morgan and Olson Mem Hwy.

Thanks for the update on the court date. Please keep us informed of any changes.

Today the defense requested to continue the case until August 26,2014 @ 1:00pm. The defense wants more time to reconstruct the crash site. I think the alleged drunk wants more time to be free. Please keep emailing and showing up for court!

This is unacceptable! We live in the same neighborhood as this alleged murderer and are just sick that he is living a free life....and, DRIVING!! We are keeping a close watch because we will be voting in the next election. This guy has had enough freedom!

Anonymous said...

Yes he has! It's alleged that both his daughter and him both have previous DUI's. His was over 20 years ago so it's not showing up in court records....be safe in your neighborhood while he is driving!

It's alleged that both him and his daughter have previous DUI's. It has been over 20 years ago for him that's why it's not showing up in court records. ...be safe in your neighborhood while he is driving! !!

Anonymous said...

So what ever happened at the August 26th court date?

Johnny Northside! said...

Good question. I will ask Jordan North to look into that.

Anonymous said...

Well it's late October now and Mr. Bertelsen has not yet been sentenced...
What in the HELL is going on here???
Maybe the judge is letting him have his freedom now because he'll be putting him away for basically the rest of his life.
We can only hope

Jordan North said...

The next court date is November 7,2014 @ 9am and the trial date is set for February 9, 2015 Justice for Brandy and Melvin is a must.
Update: New Judge
REMEMBER TO WRITE IMPACT STATEMENTS to The Honorable Kathryn L. Quaintance.

Thanks for the update!
This guy doesn't have a chance in hell in a trial. His attorney is extending court dates to give him as much time as possible before he goes away probably for the rest of his life being he's around 57. I seriously believe he'll get a minimum of 30 years with possible parole at 18 yrs or so.
Too bad we can't rewind life about 2 years.........

Jordan North said...

You're welcome.

I would be baffled if he were given a lenient sentence but not surprised. Let's hope you're right!

The "karma" remark by an unknown commenter obviously refers to the information found at that link, which turns out to be a foreclosure notice for Mr. Bertelsen. I am copying and pasting it for the historical record.

Though many individuals are mad at Mr. Bertelsen--quite justifiably, I believe--this entire matter is a tragedy, including Mr. Bertelsen (and spouse) apparently losing their home. One can't help but think the expenses of the legal defense and all the stress associated with the ongoing legal proceedings must surely play a role in this.

Awful. The whole thing is awful piled upon awful for all involved. But Bertelsen is alive and the victims are dead, so even with the loss of his home he's still the lucky one and (the facts will tend to show) the one who caused all this pain by his irresponsible action and out-of-control addiction.
