"Umami By Travail" Will Open Around September 11 In Old Louisiana Chicken Restaurant At Hawthorn (Sic) Crossings Strip Mall...

Minneapolis Eater Dot Com wrote a little piece about Umami by Travail, and how this "pop up" concept restaurant will be opening in North Minneapolis. But Eater Dot Com didn't say where, exactly, the restaurant was going to open or precisely when.

According to Joel Breegemann, a giant of North Minneapolis neighborhood revitalization, Umami will be opening in the former Louisiana Fried Chicken restaurant in the Hawthorn (sic) Crossings strip mall.

To my recollection, Louisiana Fried Chicken didn't last long there. But the owners of Umami won't have to worry about succeeding in that space, because the whole "pop up" concept is the restaurant will be temporary. Umami is scheduled to last through October 11 before it finds permanent space inside The Rookery.

The word "umami," by the way, is a Japanese word that means something close to "savory."

Ever since I announced my "What Should Johnny's Next Blogging Obsession Be" contest, discussion has been taking place and suggestions are being made. I heard one Northside resident was going to take pictures of tornado-damaged houses that should have been fixed long ago, still wearing ghostly aqua-colored wraiths of tattered tarps.

And then there's 3203 Logan Ave. North. Plenty to say about THAT one, but participants in the North Talk Facebook forum are still reeling from yesterday's revelations the elderly owner's son is none other than "White Student Union" founder Thomas David, an incredibly controversial character in 1991, now a twice-divorced convicted felon on parole still reliving glory days when he was (so he claims) the valedictorian of Patrick Henry High School.

And then, to put the cherry atop the flaming flambe of neighborhood controversy, somebody set fire to 3203 Logan Ave. N. a couple nights ago and arson investigators are reportedly looking into it. (The fire was put out quickly, almost as though somebody who cared about the property was right there to call after the fire....hmmmmm...readers can do the freaking math)

In light of all that, once bent up little fence at the Hawthorn (sic) Crossing strip mall may seem a bit anti-climactic. However, as the poet said, "Good fences make good neighbors." On this basis, Hawthorn Crossings hasn't...

Hawthorn (Sic) Crossings Strip Mall Is The Ragged Stepchild Of Sherman And Associates...

The Star Tribune recently had an informative article on Sherman And Associates, a local real estate developer with a billion dollar portfolio, click here. The article mentioned many of George Sherman's various properties, including his exciting and visionary redevelopment of Riverside Plaza in the West Bank area.

One Sherman and Associates property noticeably ABSENT from the article is our very own...

...Hawthorn (sic) Crossings strip mall, a location which (it must be admitted) has cleaned up a bit lately, but still remains quite troubled by drug dealing and loitering. Pictured above (photographed from two angles) is one piece of evidence that Hawthorn (sic) Crossings is the ragged, neglected stepchild of the Sherman and Associates empire.

This fence, obviously hit by a car and bent out of shape, has remained in this sorry state for, well, more than a year. I think it was about a year ago that I called 311 about this fence. I can remember making the call because the fence is quite a distance from the strip mall, and I distinctly remember thinking, well, what address should I use? I ended up using the address for the McDonalds, because it's located across from that business in the strip mall on the other side of the parking lot.

More than a year later, it's still unfixed, still bent out of shape, still a pony-could-get-loose-and-run-in-traffic situation. Click here for musical homage.

I must confess, before I read the article in the Star Tribune, I had no idea how financially successful George Sherman is or how extensive his property holdings are...though I'd heard about his plush condos down by the Mississippi River. After reading the article, I can't help but think: why can't this highly successful man make Hawthorn (sic) Crossings a better asset to the community?

Is Hawthorn (sic) Crossings Strip Mall Turning Around?

Word reaches me from a reliable source saying some of the store owners in Hawthorn (sic) Crossings strip mall believe the drug and loitering-infested area has been "turning around lately" due to increased police presence. In the photo above, City Councilman Don Samuels is pictured with a crew cleaning up litter in the area, and doing a very nice job, I might add.

From where I'm standing, it's hard to notice very much difference at the troubled Hawthorn (sic) Crossings strip mall--though maybe, possibly, I think--there is a slight decline in the number of no-accounts hanging around in the parking lot dealing dope.

However, these no-accounts seem to congregate at the front entrance of a nearby apartment building OWNED BY THE SAME FOLKS WHO OWN HAWTHORN (sic) CROSSINGS STRIP MALL and, of course, the no-accounts also like to hang out in the alley near Burger King, click here.

If the drug-loitering thugs have actually been displaced from Hawthorn (sic) Crossings, they haven't been displaced very far.

"Thug Memorials" Refreshed In North Minneapolis--No Good Will Come Of This!

On Memorial Day--the holiday set aside to honor dead members of the military who actually made some kind of (expletive) positive contribution to this nation--at least two "thug memorials" were refreshed in North Minneapolis. One of the memorials, pictured above, is at Hawthorne Crossings strip mall and memorializes Haywood Eaton, who died in a hail of bullets over some kind of drama involving a vehicle--badly borrowed, but NOT stolen.

The other memorial is in the Jordan Neighborhood and memorializes Marvin Ray Maynard, a much-too-young-to-die young man who was hanging out with the wrong crowd and paid for it with his life.

Despite promises made in the dark by the 311 system, check out this blog post, the Marvin Ray Maynard memorial has only been "addressed" by being ignored. At one time there was one teddy bear in the memorial--tied to the tree like a torture victim--now it appears the first teddy bear died in a gang-related incident, but left a whole brood of little bears with no decent father figure in their life.

As for Haywood Eaton's memorial, the soggy remains had been removed--apparently by management at the drug-and-thug infested Hawthorn (sic) Crossings strip mall, only to...

...reappear on Memorial Day.

Despite my hard ass tone, I am sorry for the loss represented by these memorials. I think memorialization is appropriate and, indeed, could take place at the site of their untimely deaths for as long as a month. But after a month or so, the appropriate place for a memorial is a CEMETERY. My neighborhood is not a cemetery and my neighborhood should not LOOK like a cemetery.

The Mayor has announced crime-fighting initiatives in North Minneapolis, including (my personal favorite) leaning hard on uncooperative victims of shootings living the "thug life." Well, I think getting rid of these "thug glorifying memorials" is surely one valuable piece of the strategic puzzle.

Goddess Of Glass And New Restaurant Expected To Open On 2200 Block Of Lowry Ave. N.

Connie Beckers, known as the "Goddess of Glass," is opening a new shoppe (sic) at 2205 Lowry Ave. N., as announced on her own website, click here. Northsiders are excited to hear of an established artist moving into space on Lowry Ave. N., an area both needing and poised for commercial revitalization.

At the same time, word is a hot new "sit down" restaurant may open in the space next door, note the top two photos in this blog post. The owners of the would-be restaurant (not named here quite yet) were initially interested in the old Wafana's building, but decided to avoid that location due to variance issues which appeared insurmountable. (If only all would-be property owners could be THAT smart)

Some of us in NoMi were teasing Connie Beckers about her decision to go with the word "shoppe" instead of "shop." Where, goes the joke, did Connie find those two spare letters? Well, according to my sources...

The "E" is the missing letter from "Hawthorn (sic) Crossings" strip mall, which apparently went with a simpler spelling to accommodate their customer demographic of sparsely-educated thugs and drug dealers who hang around all day in the parking lot.

As for the extra "P," it is reportedly the "missing P sound" from the last name of the "other well-known Connie" in North Minneapolis, Connie Nompelis, which is pronounced "No-bell-iss."

It's Greek.

Update On The Olympic Cafe Hours Issue...

JNS blog previously reported on Olympic Cafe on West Broadway and their hopes of staying open later. Despite opposition in the community--those of us who feel like Olympic primarily serves chicken drummies to drug dealers who hang out at Hawthorn (sic) Crossings strip mall all day long, the kind of "lower than low end" establishment we call a "thug store"--word came that Olympic got approval to extend their hours.

In regard to the extension of the hours, I was told other businesses in the area had late hours, and failing to approve hours for Olympic might have exposed the city to unacceptable liability. So Olympic got its approval--with teeth clenched during the "aye" vote, I imagine--and the next step for neighborhood activists is closely monitoring the business...calling in vigorously on any litter, graffiti, suspicious characters hanging around outside, that kind of thing.

As part of this "close monitoring," a couple nights ago I dropped by there with some friends...

...hoping to have a gyro. Word was their gyros were fairly good, served with a standard but perfectly adequate gyro sauce.

However, when we arrived outside the restaurant--this must have been around 1:30 in the morning--the restaurant was closed, though it was lighted inside and loud Middle Eastern music was playing. A sign on the window said the cafe closed at 1 a.m.

We were disappointed but, then again, NOT disappointed. If this place closes up at 1 a.m. despite permission to stay open later, all the better.

We're still watching like hawks.

How Long is Long Enough for Makeshift Memorials?

Earlier this week, I was talking with some employees at businesses in the Hawthorn (sic) Crossings strip mall. One concern that got brought up was the memorial for Haywood Eaton on the corner of Broadway and Bryant.

The sun has faded much of the lettering away. The balloons have long since deflated. Many of the businesses don't want this on the property anymore, and their customers have said so too. Calls to the property owner, Sherman Associates, have gone unanswered.

People have said they wouldn't even mind taking down this memorial themselves, except for two things...

...first, a level of respect for the deceased and his loved ones, and second, the nature of Eaton's death. Like too many of our youth, he was senselessly killed in a tit-for-tat argument. Folks are rightly concerned that if the wrong person is offended by their taking down the memorial, then such action could spur more violence directed either at an individual or business in the area.

Personally, I think this makeshift memorial has long outlasted its usefulness in its current form. This isn't to say that no such memorial to Eaton should ever be placed here, and I freely admit that I have no comparison to the depths of grief that Eaton's loved ones must still be experiencing. But something that looks like this no longer pays respects to Haywood nor does it help the community. So what to do?

Ideally, the family and other loved ones of Haywood Eaton would remove these items on their own. That way if anything has sentimental value to someone, it would not be taken down and disposed of by anyone else. And then nobody would accuse people of disrespecting anyone's memory. The family could even contact Sherman Associates to see what kind of more subtle memorial the property owner might be willing to allow.

If that doesn't happen, then either the property owner or the city should remove these items, and soon. If the family and friends of Eaton, and those who placed these items here initially, don't clean things up, then somebody's got to be the bad guy.

How long do we allow such memorials to stay up? Who takes care of them? And most importantly, what do we do as a community so that these don't even need to go up in the first place?

I Love My Home In Nomi--! Here's My (Sorta) New Electric Dryer!

Sometimes I have to stop and celebrate the little milestones of home ownership, like the time I got the electric stove hooked up and made a meal of corn on the cob, click here.

Several months ago, the Minneapolis Re-Use Center had a half-off sale, and I took the opportunity to snap up an electric dryer which was normally $100 but--on that particular day--only cost me $50.

And, well, it took me a while to get around to moving it from my detached garage down to the basement, but that day finally came last week. And just in time! Hawthorn (sic) Crossings strip mall is rapidly becoming a free fire zone AS WELL AS an open air drug market, who wants to do laundry THERE? But I truly believe not only will the police get a handle on that crime, but the day will com in the not so distant future when...

Hawthorn (sic) Crossings will become a safe, clean, prosperous place where you'll be able to sit down to a $25 entree with linen tablecloths and real silver wear, accompanied by wine that doesn't come in a screw-off-lid bottle, but has a cork. So much investment and effort is going into West Broadway, but that area around the "900 block" continues to be a challenge.

Ha. I guess this isn't the thing most people think about while plugging in their new dryer and doing that first load of laundry. But what a grand adventure home ownership has been in this rapidly-revitalizing neighborhood. And how good to have clean laundry for my next impending truck driving adventure!

Yet Another Shooting At The Notorious Hawthorn (Sic) Crossings Strip Mall From Hell...

Today word came by phone from a friend who told me of police and crime scene tape on Bryant Ave. N. and West Broadway Ave, the very spot which had been taped up after the murder of Haywood Eaton not so long ago, click here. By the time I got there only a single remnant of the tape remained, but I know that street well enough to realize the tape was fresh, not leftover from the previous shooting.

No information could be obtained from bystanders--heck, I walked into one store and nobody seemed to actually be there working, even when I yelled "HELLOOOOOOOOOOOO." I could have walked off with a new pair of shoes but, well, I didn't and (for the record) I prefer used shoes from the Salvation Army. More environmental, you know.

Tonight I managed to find out from the Star Tribune what happened at Broadway and Bryant Ave. N.

"A man was shot at least once in the back in Minneapolis about 1 p.m. Sunday at Broadway Avenue W. and Bryant Avenue. The man, who is in his 20s, suffered a non-life-threatening injury, said Minneapolis spokesman Sgt. William Palmer. The victim did not provide suspect information, Palmer said. The motive is unknown."

This comes just a day after I posted the incredible 911 data for that area, click here. What's really amazing is how few calls there actually are. If a person sat and watched from a concealed vantage point and just called 911 over and over, it would be possible to rack up--by my reckoning--about ten times the calls. But the area is so full of thugs and dubious doubtful so-called businesses, there really isn't a good observation point like that.

Some places you want to make a plea for more police, but in the case of Hawthorn (sic) Crossings, you have to wonder if, really, maybe what we need are National Guard troops.

Incredible, Epic Numbers of 911 Calls On the "900" And "1000" Block Of West Broadway, Here They All Are...

So just the other night I was with a friend trying to buy a shamrock shake at Hawthorn (sic) Crossings strip mall, but that didn't work because McDonalds shuts down their shake machine late at night. How stupid is THAT? I mean, hey, shamrocks are supposed to be lucky, and we weren't feeling lucky that night.

But a couple women got lucky in the car ahead of us, as a small hand-to-hand exchange went down even as we sat there and watched. So brazen was the exchange it was like--WHO CARES if somebody in the car behind is watching? Hey, this is Hawthorn (sic) Crossings. Drug deals happen here all the time.

A call to 911 didn't produce much help--dealer and customer were gone, the customer with Big Macs for those inevitable munchies. But it got me thinking, wondering if I could get the 911 information on that whole block as easily as it turned up for the Olympic Cafe.

Well, I sure did get lucky...

I'm going to toss up all the info. There's no commentary at the end, I'm just putting up the info so the sheer epic magnitude of it can be grasped. Please ask yourself what is the COST TO THE TAXPAYERS of these two blocks, with their constant crime? Whatever it is, I'm sure there aren't enough tax dollars being generated on shamrock shakes and the sale of used clothing items, not enough to make up for the cost of all those police resources.

YES! The night of our collective hopes, dreams and vision arrived last night at Good Sports Bar and Grill. It was the simple, elegant, solid-proof-we've-turned-the-corner-in-NoMi vision of longtime Hawthorne neighborhood contributor Jim Wentzell: a good restaurant on West Broadway Avenue, where you can order a steak and Manhattan.

Jim Wentzell gave us that dream, the way tribes in ancient times might receive a prophesy from their oldest, wisest elders and the prophesy takes root in every mind: we can leave this hard and rocky place, pass through difficulty but arrive on the other side of obstacles. And on that other side there is a happy, safe, productive place with meat and drink for all. If we work hard, if we all pull together, we can get to that place.

We believed in it, gravitated toward it, worked at it. And last night...

...the vision became a reality.

Social gatherings like Jim Wentzell day inevitably turn into opportunities for NoMi movers and shakers to socialize. Above, Sarita Turner (the Executive Director of West Broadway Coalition) and Council Member Don Samuels have an impromptu confab. What are they chatting about? I sure hope it's the problems at Hawthorn (sic) Crossings strip mall, where there is open drug dealing day after day. I'm just saying. 

Realtor and historic home preservationist Connie Nompelis chats with Pat Carney. Pat took a bunch of great pictures which are probably already online. (Nompelis is prounounced No-bell-is, it's Greek) 

Jim's almost-his-birthday-cake was provided by Cub Foods. A VIP at Cub named Ed Anderson probably had a lot to do with it. 

Council Member Diane Hofstede made an appearance, sharply dressed as always. Above, she poses with "ladies man" Jim Wentzell and his lady friend. I hear they've been together for, like, 17 years or something? Jim has great taste. 

The guy above standing next to Council Member Diane Hofstede is a real estate developer named "Swami." He has been the quiet man behind the scenes responsible for so much progress on this part of West Broadway. As far as I know, this is the first time his picture is being published or his name is being associated with all the wonderful work he's accomplished in the Hawthorne Neighborhood. Swami doesn't appear to seek the limelight at all. But this guy deserves our thanks and praise. 

Mike Christiansen of CPED picked up the tab for Jim Wentzell. In the photo above, Mike continues to prove the ongoing Johnny Northside hypothesis that there's no family friendly way to prose with a Polish sausage. The sausage came from Pam Patrek, but was made by the husband of the person known on this blog as "the Polish woman." This sausage frequently shows up at various celebrations of revitalization progress in the Hawthorne Neighborhood, whether planned or impromptu. 

As is usually the case at "revitalizer" events in NoMi, the smallest members of the neighborhood were passed from hand-to-hand so lots of folks could enjoy "baby face time." One of the owners of Good Sports bar commented that it had probably been a long time since the establishment was so family friendly that a baby was present. To which I replied, "Well, you mean a baby present that wasn't dropped off for Child Protective Services?" 

Two former neighborhood board chairs--Peter Teachout of Hawthorne and Kip Browne of Jordan--introduce their babies to each other.

Sherman Patterson--an aide to Mayor Rybak--poses with a friend. When progress is being made in North Minneapolis, Patterson often has his fingers in it behind the scenes. 

The Teachout family loved the family friendly atmosphere at Good Sports. They had pizza with their kids, and then some virgin pina coladas; proving that "fun" is the first word in "fundamentalist." 

JoyAnne Teachout thought she'd lost her purse and called the bar after leaving. Then she called back to say the purse had turned up. While the purse seemed to be missing, everybody looked for it, even City Council Member Don Samuels. 
Peter Teachout had a conversation with U.S. Bank Branch Manager Mohammed Agoubi about criminal activity at Hawthorn (sic) Crossings strip mall, and what can be done about it. Agoubi also sits on the Hawthorne Neighborhood Council Board of Directors.

Another great guy from Good Sports. Here, I was trying to get the secret 12-spice chicken wing recipe out of him. I couldn't get the recipe itself, but I learned it was invented in about 1992 at "All Sports" bar and offers had been made of up to $5,000 for the recipe, but all the offers have been refused. Incredibly, there is no catchy, distinctive name for the chicken wings. 

Anybody? Anybody? Bueller?
