Images, Aftermath Of The "Nobody Cares But Northsiders" Shooting On Penn Ave. N.

Photos contributed by Jeff Skrenes, blog post by John Hoff

Jeff Skrenes, who recently purchased a house on Penn Ave. N., and quickly received his "baptism of fire" when a shooting happened between the occupants of two cars on the street outside, recently sent me four photos of the aftermath of the incident.

Nobody was killed and the incident didn't even make "the news," except the version of the news offered up by Johnny Northside Dot Com.

However...

"It's Crazy How Used To This S*** You Can Become" On Penn Ave. N. Tonight...

Afghan sewage truck leaking sewage, COP Arian, Afghanistan, blog post by John Hoff

Because I happened to hear about it on Facebook, an incident that happened tonight on the 2600 block of Penn Ave. N. will be immortalized here in the blogosphere even though nobody was killed by gunfire. Here is what happened according to an account by Penn Ave. N. resident Jeff Skrenes, as posted on Facebook...

The JNS Blog "Half A Legal Victory Party" At Good Sports Bar And Grill...

Photos and blog post by John Hoff

The party-loving "revitalizer class" in North Minneapolis (NoMi) will seize upon nearly any excuse for a champagne toast, including the recent "half a legal victory" in the Jerry Moore v. John Hoff a/k/a Johnny Northside defamation lawsuit. Heck, if we'll
toast to a whorehouse being demolished we'll sure toast "half a victory" in court.

The verdict in the lawsuit was, of course, THIS BLOG TOLD THE TRUTH when I said
Jerry Moore was involved in a high-profile fraudulent mortgage at 1564 Hillside Ave. N. From that legal determination of truth, victory can be wrestled out of the rest of the ruling, especially with so much high-powered legal help coming out of the woodwork to get a piece of the action, and God bless 'em, every one. But I still think this one may go all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. Something in my gut just says so, though it's hard to put one's law-trained finger upon the precise "issue of first impression."

But back to the subject at hand...a drinking party!

In the photo above, shot glasses are pressed into service to...

...drink champagne. Who cares what you use as a cup, so long as the cup is filled with bubbly? Ann Yin is visible in the photo. Her local and organic foods store,
Local D'Lish, continues to garner accolades far and wide. With the end of winter, farmers markets will spring up all over, but where was the living green fire of the farmer's market kept alive during the long, severe winter? In Ann's store.

That's where you can find a farmer's market during the winter, and virtually nowhere else. Just as spring comes "up from the valley" in the mountains of Virginia, so do springtime farmer's markets "come forth from the door of Ann Yin's store." Ann Yin made what was, to me, the most moving toast of the night: because this blog is not afraid to speak out, others do not feel afraid. If this blog falters, if this blog is afraid, others will be afraid as well.

That can't happen.

The champagne was given to Megan Goodmundson by one of her relatives, who was moving and was all, like, "I don't really need this magnum of French champagne." So we dubbed it "freegan champagne" because it was free.

Attorney Paul Godfread, above, is really more of the "listener type," especially compared to yours truly.

Brian Finstad and his partner Raymel, who moved from South Minneapolis (SoMi) to NoMi. In the foreground, Allie Wagner and her father, Dennis Wagner. When Jerry Moore was involved in the physical altercation in the basement of Jordan New Life Church, on the night of the JACC election which put the "New Majority" in power, Allie Wagner had to witness her father, Dennis, get struck by Jerry Moore--according to an eyewitness account.

The one and only
Jonathon Palmer. At one time, Palmer was executive director of the Jordan Neigborhood...before the "Old Majority" managed the organization so badly they can no longer afford an executive director...not yet, anyway.

Jordan resident Dave Haddy demonstrates how he witnessed Jerry Moore strike P.J. Hubbard in the face on the night of the "church basement altercation." Yes, P.J. was wearing glasses, too.

For a "half a victory" party, we had quite a crowd!

Ed Kohler of The Deets blog shows up, and poses with the champagne. He was off to some exotic city to inspect the toilet paper. I think Ed Kohler was about going crazy to be a witness in the trial, and be part of the circus. Too bad he didn't get a chance to testify, but his name was on the plaintiff's witness list so Kohler gets his footnote in "blogosphere trial of the century" history.

Joel Breeggemann, the "get to NoMi" guy, was already at the bar and kindly made an appearance at our gathering. He talked about how he remembered, very well, a homophobic rant Jerry Moore launched into right after an article was published in Lavender Magazine about how NoMi is the "gayborhood of the year."

Eric Johnson, from the Irving Inquisition blog, drains the last few drops of champagne from the bottle. Maybe some crafty lawyer can use this picture to accuse Eric Johnson of blogging while intoxicated.

(Sarcasm font) Don Samuels is the principal, Johnny Northside is merely the agent. All power and glory to Don Samuels.

Brian Finstad's Canadian relative is home shopping in North Minneapolis and has been for a while, looking to expand the revitalizer empire. At social events like the "Johnny Northside half a victory party" we plan, we exchange information, we renew our bonds which are already strong like soldiers in a platoon, facing adversity but bringing about victory.

This is our neighborhood. We're not leaving. The thugs, mortgage fraudsters, and Level Three sex offenders, THEY are the ones who will be LEAVING. We are sticking around, and turning this place into Urban Utopia for our children, and our children's children.

Thank you, friends, for coming to my party. I look forward to another one and--if it is necessary--another and another. If you missed this one, maybe you can make the next one!

Celebrating Earth Day At Connie's $7,900 House In NoMi...

Photos and blog post by John Hoff

Recently, I was lucky enough to have my son Alex over for a weekend visitation on Earth Day. We went to Farview Park and saw a science demonstration about groundwater. Woo hoo.

I certainly hope as Earth Day continues to develop we will have traditions that are a lot more fun. For example, recycled and re-purposed presents for friends and family. Heck, just take the old leftover Christmas stuff you don't want and give it to somebody else.

But, anyway, after Farview Park we needed a ride--my new vehicle named "Lefty" was getting fixed out of town--so we walked over to Connie Nompelis' house near Farview Park, figuring Jeff would be there hula-hooping and we could bum a ride. Sure enough...

There was Jeff doing a new hula move, click here for more details.

South Minneapolis (SoMi) activist Brian Finstad was there, and gave Alex a tour of the house so Alex could see the amazing transformation. Alex hadn't been inside the house since the night of the housewarming, so he found the changes truly notable.

Finstad kindly made a point of telling Alex how "your dad" managed to figure out a way to get the nasty, smelly fridge out the back door like an oversized Chinese puzzle; opening the fridge door and putting it outside door first, making it wheel around like a frumpy ballerina and then repeatedly kicking it to force it through, somehow doing this WITHOUT breaking the door frame. Good times.

Outside, a friend of Brian was patching up the foundation. All in all, it was a low-key but fun earth day with THE COOLEST SON EVER in a rapidly revitalizing neighborhood which has made frequent and good quality visitation possible. NoMi might be "Divorced Daddyville" but it sure beats "Lives Too Far Away From His Kid In The Twin Cities To Spend Meaningful Time Together Daddyville."

Party! Woo hoo! PARTY AT CONNIE'S $7,900 House In Hawthorne!

Photos and blog post by John Hoff

With improvements happening at Connie Nompelis' $7,900 house almost every day, neighbors are starting to sit up and take notice. In fact, word is the house next door--which has an identical layout and, for the past several years, has been beautifully painted--will soon be listed on the real estate market. Improvements include a brand new boiler just installed days ago.

Yay! New boiler.

No, seriously, things like that get me excited.

Clearly, the presence of good neighbors instead of 1.) a vacant house, 2.) a vacant lot, or 3.) yet another slumlord rental right next door has played a positive role in allowing the "house next door owners" to ask for a decent price instead of a "just give the damn thing away" price.

A couple nights ago, friends gathered in the backyard of Connie's house to have a barbeque and bonfire. The pictures and captions which follow are from that event...

Here is the house next door. Soon, the paint job on Connie's $7,900 house will look just as good, and the two classic homes will compliment each other and the neighborhood. Which will make MORE people move in and be good, revitalizing neighbors. It's like a positive domino effect.

Above, some of the guests at the party arrived in a limo, in the middle of a bachelorette party. This is usually a family friendly blog, so nobody look closely at the little tan objects in the young woman's veil. Every day, Connie's $7,900 house accumulates new layers of revitalization history. The bachelorette party was one of those new layers.

Here is the front porch of Connie's house, paint removal in progress.

So, a couple days ago, I was in my small semi-rural home town, visiting relatives, and I did something I hadn't done for a number of years: visited my father's grave. I cleaned the gravesite, including removing these weathered pieces of wood which once held Memorial Day flowers.

Wanting to do something special with the old wooden pieces instead of just tossing them away, I brought them to North Minneapolis to be part of a bonfire. This turned out to be the bonfire.

My father was a taxi driver in Minneapolis, often plying his trade here in North Minneapolis. It was that last cab robbery in North which made him quit, the one where he nearly died from carbon monoxide poisoning, locked in the trunk of his cab by three, possibly four armed robbers who punched and pistol whipped him for a small amount of money.

The Minneapolis Police Department saved my dad's life that day, and though it was probably a relatively routine incident, perhaps even forgotten by the officers that participated, I have never forgotten the debt I owe MPD.

Well, anyway, the wood was very dry and blazed up nicely.

I'm hoping the "No Copper" sign will soon disappear from the house next door. For the record, the reason it has "No Copper" is because the pipes are plastic Pex. Also, note how the letters themselves are copper-colored. I love that thoughtful little touch. You don't see slumlord Keith Reitman doing anything that creative with his Sharpie marker.

Cooking up chicken at the barbeque, Raymel was styling with his zipper pockets. Jordan Neighborhood super citizen Megan Goodmundson is the hand model.

It seems like when you go to a party in NoMi, there's always some new and different food or beverage. This is Dutch chocolate wine, which I'd never seen before. I could have consumed the whole bottle. It reminded me of Bailey's, only not as potent so I could drink a lot more.

Every weekend is a party here in NoMi for those who are hooked in tight with their neighborhood association and neighborhood activism. We work hard to make this place better, and then we party hard, celebrating our success.

When Will Friedman's Shoe Store Fix Its Butt Ugly Windows? SoMi Activst Brian Finstad Makes A Vow...

Photo and blog post by John Hoff

First, let me make it clear I TOTALLY SYMPATHIZE WITH FRIEDMAN'S SHOE STORE. Their glass windows have been broken and replaced so many times they finally gave up and went with Plexiglass, which is now ugly, discolored, and layered with shoe brand stickers as thickly as the United Nations is festooned with the flags of all nations.

So, yes, there's a reason for the current situation...but the current situation is not good enough. You don't see Stu Ackerberg putting crappy Plexiglass on his renovated buildings. And while Merwin's Liquor dragged its feet for a while, they finally did something about the "butt fence" where so much loitering took place, for which we are all grateful.

The inevitable North Minneapolis trend is toward progress and beautification. Like slumlord Keith Reitman with his "ugly ass chocolate brown builing," Friedman's is bucking that positive trend. This blog will not cease calling out and criticizing Friedman's in a very public way until the "butt glass" situation is remedied.

However...

Some weeks ago, while drinking at Donnie Dirk's Zombie den with South Minneapolis activist Brian Finstad and some other fine friends, we were talking about Friedman's "butt glass" situation and Brian made a vow...

Finstad vowed if Friedman's would replace the Plexiglass with real glass, and keep the real glass instead of backsliding, he would BUY ALL HIS NEW SHOES AT FRIEDMAN'S FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE. In the photo above, Brian gestures with his shoe, emphasizing his vow.

I can't remember the last time I bought NEW shoes, since I prefer my footwear cheap and used. So I'll make the same vow, knowing it will probably cost me nothing and never come to pass. This, however, WILL come to pass: Friedman's WILL do something about those butt-ugly windows, or they WILL never hear the end of it.

Researching The Farview Park Historic District...

Photos by John Hoff

Brian Finstad, a South Minneapolis (SoMi) neighborhood activist who has become increasingly involved in North Minneapolis (NoMi) affairs, was recently doing some research about the Farview Park Historic District. Brian found out that 621 26th Ave. N., pictured above, once had a tower. The tower was removed in 1920, according to old city records.

Brian and Connie Nompelis--who is totally into historic houses--believe the tower was Victorian in style and removed during the 1920s because, during that period of time, Victorian seemed old and icky kind of like a 1970s avocado fridge. However, as Connie put it so well, if you wait around long enough...avocado makes a come back.

Right next to 621 is 623 26th Ave. N., where slumlord Bashir Moghul caught a bullet recently, click here for that story.

Oh, the photo of Brian is taken inside my house on Bryant Ave. N. Brian is expressing how much he loves French glass doors.
