JNS Blog Tries To Uncover Why Blogger Don Allen Was Terminated From His Post As "Second Vice President" Of Minneapolis NAACP, Oh, It's Not Pretty, Folks...

Photo from Don Allen's Facebook, used under First Amendment Fair Comment
and Criticism, (OMG check out this NAACP member hanging with the GOP) blog post
by John Hoff

For those who don't want to read my entire, detailed article below, here's the skinny from an informed source about why IBNN blogger Don Allen was really kicked out of his Second Vice President position with the Minneapolis NAACP:

He tape recorder (sic) NAACP Regional managers and played there (sic) conversations on him and Ron's blog radio show... Posted lies about executive board members and bashed NAACP and other leaders... it was just never ending.... but you know Don. Why do you REALLY care???????? What has he done now

And now settle in for the rest of the story, folks...

"Does Your Probation Officer Know How You Park?" Seeking Answers In Northside "Car Climbs A Light Pole" Incident...

Minnesota Department of Corrections Offender Locator mug shot,
therefore public domain, blog post by John Hoff

Everything I am hearing keeps confirming what a high-placed "Little Birdie" told this blogger; that a recent dramatic "car climbs a light pole to get away from gunfire" incident in North Minneapolis involved the son of NAACP President Jerry McAfee, long a fixture in North Minneapolis politics and society. Despite the jokey headline, this blog is not clear who was actually or allegedly at the wheel and did the miraculous job of "parking" a car sideways against a light pole.

I couldn't have pulled that off if I tried, over and over, a hundred times. IT'S A MIRACLE!!!!

Julian McAfee, pictured above from his Minnesota Department of Corrections mug shot, has been on probation since May 24, 2010, but will soon be getting off probation, which expires on April 22 of this year.

Unless, of course, he messes up somehow...

Creative stock photo, blog post by John Hoff

Channel Five and other media reported on a car that climbed up a light pole in North Minneapolis, after the driver swerved to avoid gunshots, click here for story.

Now a "little birdie," highly placed in an official position, tells JNS blog the driver of the car was none other than...

Mpls Mirror Denounces Former Friends And/Or Allies, Disappears Into A Dark Hole Of Its Own Self-Created Loony Misery...

Photo by John Hoff, Al Flowers and the Mpls Mirror Lady, blog post by John Hoff

Normally, I ignore the Mpls Mirror, which is Terry Yzaguirre's attempt at blogging gloriously free of the conventional constraints of proper spelling, grammar and punctuation.

Yes, I'm quite aware the Mirror doesn't like me very much, and the feeling is mutual. So I don't comment on The Cracked Mirror or mention The Cracked Mirror except, for example, when writing about criminal charges leveled against Terry's children or the crazy lawsuits the Yzaguirre family has filed in the court with the help of troubled attorney Jill Clark.

(Want to file a CRAZY lawsuit? Get a CRAZY lawyer. Wouldn't that make a great advertisement on the back of a phonebook?)

But every now and then I do check the Mpls Mirror because, who knows? Maybe a stray nugget of info will turn up about Jill Clark and it will prove to be a lead to information when I write Part Fifty-Six Or Whatever It Is of The Madness of Jill Clark.

So at about 2 in the morning, I checked the Mirror. The latest article on the Mirror referred me to Terry's other blog, Unconventional Grandma.

Wow. Turns out I am still capable of being surprised by that category of people some of us just refer to as "The Crazies"...

JNS BLOG EXCLUSIVE: Brad Johnson--Who Prosecuted Larry "Maximum" Maxwell--Running For Anoka County Attorney

Photos from the Facebook page of Brad Johnson, blog post by John Hoff

Information floating around as rumor, pieced together with information from Facebook, and verified with a reliable source positively confirm the following: Brad Johnson is running for Anoka County attorney. No other major media outlet has reported this story, but rumor has it the Star Tribune is currently chasing it.

Johnson is the prosecutor who...

...took down Larry "Maximum" Maxwell for mortgage fraud, a matter reported extensively on this blog.

And, finally, my personal favorite...a PDF file of the Larry Maxwell criminal complaint, in which especially astute readers might find a familiar name from the Jordan Neighborhood.

So far as I can tell, Larry Maxwell was the biggest state court conviction for racketeering EVER in the state of Minnesota. (If anybody has contrary information, please share it)

Brad Johnson also produced a conviction in the Susan Newell / Ed Boler mortgage fraud case, after the efforts of another prosecutor resulted in a mistrial. (To be fair, that result has been attributed to a quirky juror)

Johnson has an understated style with witnesses, making potential foes cooperative and almost friendly. I have watched this guy in action day after day, and the idea of him running a prosecutor's office is very exciting...particularly since some of the mortgage fraud fungus involves cases with properties stretching from Hennepin to Anoka.

This blog is not only reporting this matter but also moving quickly to endorse Brad Johnson.

Brad Johnson, consider yourself endorsed.

Hundreds March for Peace in Memory of Alisha Neely

Post, photos, and video by the Hawthorne Hawkman.

I've heard it asked before, "What good do these marches do?" I'm not sure how to answer that question. But I had been thinking this week about a sermon I'd heard shortly after 9/11, called "What do you do when the bomb drops?" When a person or a community has had a BOMB dropped on them, what do you do in response? What CAN you do?

With that in mind, I went to the parking lot of Cub Foods on Broadway Saturday morning...

...and heard KG Wilson speak for the first time. He was standing in front of the Mad Dads mobile unit, saying the lines that have already resonated through our community: "We've got to put the 'neighbor' back in the 'hood.' Because if you don't, you welcome in the hoodlums, the gangbangers, the drug dealers, saying, 'Come on in; kill our kids.'"

Wilson also challenged some of the circumstances that led to Neely's tragic death. She was killed while at a party with reportedly over 60 teenagers present. Where were the parents in all of this? Wilson asked. Now teenagers can be pretty sneaky about setting up and going to parties like this, I know from my own experience. But somebody let this party happen, and when you get sixty teenagers together for a house party, that really is just asking for trouble. Kudos to Wilson for calling that out.

I'm also going to give credit to Rev. McAfee for taking a stand at the funeral, where he pointed out that someone had left a note at Neely's makeshift memorial calling her "my bitch." Sadly, something almost identical happened at the makeshift memorial for Marvin Ray Maynard III. One person wrote a note saying, "We missn you lil bro (illegible) in a better place (illegible) n***** f*** the world I luv you my n*****." McAfee went on to say, "The more you define yourselves as 'that bitch, that ho,' you develop that psyche,"

At both of these memorial sites, a bottles of gin were left as well. Our CHILDREN are DYING and we think it's okay to memorialize them with bottles of hard liquor? Does anyone else see something inherently WRONG with that?

(The one possible exception is if there are cultural parallels to Native Americans and tobacco or Santeria practitioners and rum, wherein those items hold a spiritual place similar to Christians' bread and wine. But this really just seems like ignorance.)

One of the other speakers was Minnesota gubernatorial candidate Peter Idusogie. I'm still not convinced he's got what it takes to be governor, but once again, he was well-spoken. We as a community are grateful when politicians like Mr. Idusogie not only come and speak TO us, but walk WITH us.

The march started across the street from Cub as we went down Broadway to Penn, then up to 26th and over to Lyndale. I eyeballed at least 200 people who came out to stand with the community.

For most of the march, I was in the middle of the biker crowd.

And what surprised me, when I was talking with at least the folks immediately surrounding me, was how much they give back in volunteering. These people are dedicated to reaching out to the homeless, working at battered women's shelters, and visiting those in nursing homes. That service to our community should not go unnoticed.

Also, a special thanks goes out to Metrotransit. They lent us a bus at the end of the route to take us back to the Cub Foods parking lot.

I saw quite a few people with whom I have strong political differences, but it was clear that we were all marching because we care about our community and the death of Alisha Neely struck a chord. In that spirit, I went up to Al Flowers, shook his hand, and said, "Al, I know we've had our differences, but I want to thank you for being out here today."

Just before we arrived at New Salem, I had an excellent conversation with a gentleman who said that the churches needed to start taking back the streets. We talked about how that might happen while minimizing the danger to church members. I mentioned that the discussion was bringing to mind one of my favorite Biblical passages from the book of James, about how having the love of God means we have to ACT. He showed me a tiny briefcase-like cache he was carrying and pulled out a Bible, immediately turning to James 2:14. "What good is it my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes or daily food. If one of you says to him, "Go, I wish you well. Keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? ... But someone will say, 'You have faith. I have deeds.' Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do."

Unbeknownst to many, if not all of us, while we were marching for peace, someone had tried to enter Alisha's funeral with a gun. He was apprehended. GBT4P. If that weren't enough, a fight broke out at the funeral after the marchers had gathered around New Salem Church. I happened to be on the steps of the church just as the fight started. I tried to get video, but was bumped and my camera was turned off. I quickly decided to put my camera away and get ready to either jump into the fray or get away quickly if needed.

There's no shortage of criticisms towards Al Flowers on this blog, but let me say this much: He was on his game today. Flowers took the bullhorn from KG Wilson and started repeating, "This is a baby's funeral!" and "The police have to be here so she can rest in peace!" Flowers can be a commanding presence, and on that day, he used that skill to harness a chaotic crowd. Well done.

I was still on the steps of the church when the pallbearers carried the white with gold trim coffin that held Alisha Neely's body past, and brought it to the hearse. Pleas were made that no violence erupt at the burial, so that she could rest in peace. I wanted to get a picture of the pallbearers and the casket as it went past me, but the air was just so full of emotion that I couldn't do it. The act of taking a photograph almost seemed intrusive to me.

But it wasn't until the next day that the full scope of what just happened hit me. I worship at River of Life Lutheran Church on Fremont and 22nd. It's a mixed-culture congregation of (mainly older) Scandinavians and (mainly younger) Liberians. One of the Liberian families brought forward three children to be baptized, and this happened the day after Alisha Neely's funeral. And I thought, "What if this baptism were interrupted by such violence? What if just as we were affirming that these children belong to God - an affirmation surely made by Rev. McAfee at Neely's service - someone brought a gun into my church with the intention of using it? What do we have to do to make sure that these three children, and that NO OTHER CHILD IN OUR COMMUNITY, dies like Alisha tragically did?

This violence is a bomb that threatens to tear apart our community. Such violence CANNOT be tolerated. That such violence is happening among our youth is even more horrendous. And that one of our YOUTH thought it would be justifiable to bring a gun to a Holy Place with the intent to use it at "a baby's funeral" is simply outrageous.

So what purpose did this march serve? This wasn't the first and I hate to say it, but may not be the last such march. Well, it goes back to the other question asked at the beginning of this post. What do you do when the bomb drops?

You go to those that are hurting, and you pick up the pieces. That's what we did on Saturday, and that's what we'll keep on doing for our community until we get it right.

Al Flowers Announces Press Conference At Imaginary Intersection...

Stock Photo, Al "I Am The Community" Flowers

Word comes from Hawthorne Housing Director Jeff Skrenes that "Mayoral Candidate" Al Flowers called a press conference today, putting out word the conference would be at the intersection of Broadway and Colfax.

For those unfamiliar with North Minneapolis (NoMi) there is no place where Colfax intersects with (West) Broadway. Al Flowers loves to constantly insert himself into North Minneapolis matters but, well, he lives in SOUTH Minneapolis (SoMi) and this is one of the times it really showed.

Other than that, I'm told...

Al "I Am The Community" Flowers is sticking to his grammar guns, and insisting on the phrase "medium income" rather than "median." He also accused Rybak of not being willing to debate. Gee, I seem to recall there was an incident where Rybak was doing a press conference in North Minneapolis, and got verbally heckled and driven off by Reverend Al MacAfee and...

Wait for it.

Wait for it.

AL FLOWERS!!!

So why should Rybak debate Flowers, when Flowers already showed how uncivil Flowers will be to Rybak? Plus there's that thing about Al Flowers shoving City Councilman Don Samuels from behind, and then suing SAMUELS for (alleged) premeditated, first degree toe stepping.

So why would Mayor Rybak come NEAR a back-shoving nutcase like Al Flowers, let alone have a debate with him? When Lennie Chism debates Chipper the Entrepreneurial Squirrel, that might be the day Mayor Rybak should condescend to debate a no-chance loser like Al Flowers, whose actions are so outrageous Flowers borders on being an imaginary character; like the boogey man.

Blog Donation Disclosures And A Media Critique...

In the course of some "house keeping" about disclosing donations to the blog, I think this would be a good time to say where I believe Johnny Northside Dot Com fits amid the other media which serve North Minneapolis...especially since this grassroots media effort runs on a shoestring, and all the other media have some "oomph" behind them.

First, consider the mainstream media. They miss most of the North Minneapolis stories, they get the stories they do cover WRONG, and they tend to show up mostly for violent crime. As much as the problems which actually plague our neighborhood, the mainstream media are part of the problem because of their constant reinforcement of the stereotype that North Minneapolis is an urban dystopian theme park of violence and decay.

This blog doesn't pull punches reporting on crime--including the theft of my own van, and the times I've had my tires slashed, probably for things I've blogged--but I make an effort to cover the WHOLE story. I think the story of North Minneapolis is the story of revitalization amid the foreclosure crisis and involved citizens taking back their streets from thugs, creating a livable and desirable urban environment...

Second, there is Al McFarlane's media machine, the so-called Insight News. First and foremost, I weep for the forests. Though Insight News has a website, the publication is completely wedded to its "flesh of dead trees" format. Insight's agenda is obvious in every issue: put Al McFarlane on the front page often (with his oh-so-serious, I'm-so-important expression) and support Al McFarlane's agenda. As far as I can see, part of that agenda involves propping up various political candidates and personalities including, but not limited to:

* The Reverend Jerry McAfee. Insight News doesn't mention McAfee's appearance as a witness on behalf of Larry "Maximum" Maxwell, who went down hard on 18 felonies involving mortgage fraud.

* Kenya McKnight, candidate for city council in the Fifth Ward. Actually, McKnight is virtually a creation of Insight News.

* Beating the drums of racial tension. McFarlane constantly tries to emphasize some kind of race-based problems, even as most of North Minneapolis is trying to make an effort to get along. While Council Member Don Samuels literally embraces my son, (see a previous blog post) Al McFarlane's Insight News appears to make an effort to tear us all apart and emphasize differences instead of diversity.

So, all in all, North Minneapolis is very poorly served by Insight News, but worse yet is the fact Insight News just doesn't crank out enough stories, enough content. I pick that rag off the rack and most of the time I'm done perusing it in sixty seconds, and then I have to put it back on the rack or find a recycle bin. Plenty of the features are just worthless filler.

Third, moving on to the little free newspaper called North News: My only two criticisms are "dead tree format" and "not enough content." This publication tries hard and often succeeds, but...well, paper is dead. At least North News has one thing down, one thing exactly right:

The story of North Minneapolis is the story of urban revitalization.

So that brings us to this blog. First of all, I don't kill trees. Secondly, it is my goal to CRANK OUT THE CONTENT. This blog finds its niche by printing a detailed, granular view of North Minneapolis and the struggle for revitalization and de-thugification in a writing style which, yes, actually tries to be entertaining. And, apparently for these reasons, readers have periodically contributed cash to this oh-so-grassroots effort.

So, yeah, some disclosures...

PayPal donations of $25, $20, $10 which all came in before June 3. These funds pretty much went to bills, bills, bills. Well, I also took my son to a movie at Mall of America.

One cash donation of $20, pictured above, which came from the hand of a hard-working man and, well, it means a lot.

So that's enough blog housekeeping. Time for more content...

"Blessed Are Ye When Men Shall Revile Ye..." (Then Again, You Might Not Be)

It's always a little bit exciting in an archaic way when a new edition of North Minneapolis "dead tree media" hits the streets, particularly Al McFarlane's "Insight News." I read Insight News twice as hard as I read most things, because I not only read what is written but I spend a considerable amount of time "reading between the lines."

The other day, I was driving around with a friend and we were all, like, LET'S GET SOMETHING TO DRINK. We were right near Mickey's Liquor. So, naturally, we drove by Mickey's Liquor and kept going. Duh. We weren't going to shop at Merwin's, either. Two words: BUTT FENCE.

We headed to Broadway Liquor Outlet (BLO) which I judge to be the "least bad" of all the places to buy liquor in North Minneapolis, and often enough a high-quality establishment with a good attitude about improving the neighborhood. Inside BLO, near a policeman keeping watch on the patrons, was a metal rack with copies of Insight News...

I grabbed a copy, saying, "Oh, look, it's the new edition." My friend said something like, "Oh, see if there's anything about Reverend Jerry McAffee in it!"

Why did my friend say this? Well, you'll just have to read between the lines here, too. Suffice to say sometimes I get my hands on information I can't confirm to a degree acceptable enough for the standard of this blog. I might spend a long time chasing this info, I may be tempted severely by its savory delicious exclusiveness...but, ultimately, I just can't nail the information down as anything other than a rumor.

Some rumors are harmless enough to print, but others...I won't touch them. I won't print such things until I have one person WITH A NAME who can confirm, creditably, in a FIRSTHAND way even if, ultimately, I won't reveal the source.

So my friend was all, like, "SEE IF THERE'S ANYTHING ABOUT REVEREND JERRY MCAFEE..."

I flipped the paper over to the part "beneath the crease" and saw an article called "First person comments from Conversations with Al McFarlane--Leaders explain the nature of leadership." And, gee, there was a picture of Reverend Jerry McAfee. In the busy aisles of BLO, while trying to pick out a good quality yet affordable bottle of champagne, I began reading what McAfee was saying about leadership, trying to read intensely between the lines.

McAfee quoted the Gospel of Matthew, the part about "Blessed are ye when men shall revile you and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake."

Oh, I thought, HOW INTERESTING! What would cause somebody like Reverend McAfee to bring up this passage about being reviled, about false things being said? McAfee went on to say, "What He (Jesus Christ) understood is anytime you are in the business of serving people, sometimes the very people that you serve will revile you..."

Wow, I thought, the plot between the lines thickens. It's not just one's enemies who may revile you, it's people you are trying to "serve" who may turn on you. Tell me more, I thought, give me more clues as to what's REALLY going on, here, because it's not obvious at the surface, but it's not JUST A SERMON, no, something is HAPPENING here but it's not being said directly. What further clues can I gather?

McAfee went on to talk about how "In the Old Testament, Nehemiah was harassed by weak men in the community who were always trying to stop Nehemiah from helping his own people. Now, what's interesting about the story is that one was kind of related to the Nehemiah's people. (sic) It means the adversary often has somebody on the inside. So they kept sending letters for Nehemiah to come down and deal with them and their criticisms. Nehemiah said, "I'm doing a great work, and I can't come down. Why should the work cease and I come down to you?"

McAfee then adds, "Don't come down. Stay where you are. We don't need to be spending time talking about somebody that makes no difference. Stay where you are. Do what you need to do. Folks in the community who have good sense know who's doing what."

So concludes the words of Rev. Jerry McAfee. Right away, thinking back to Sunday school--and, well, suffice to say I spent a lot of time in Sunday school--I remembered something like, "Nehemiah? Why does that name conjure up something about BUILDINGS AND LAND?" Why would McAfee invoke this particular Old Testament prophet when making his point? I consulted with the Scriptures (via Wikipedia, of course) and refreshed my recollections about Nehemiah.

Ah, yes, he was involved in the restoration of Jerusalem, which had fallen into a terrible state. So if McAfee sees himself as being like Nehemiah, (and the text seems to indicate he does) then Jerusalem would be...North Minneapolis? Yes, that would make sense.

So what is all this stuff about "stay where you are" and "don't talk" in the context of Nehemiah's restoration of Jerusalem, which appears to be just a metaphor for North Minneapolis?

Hmm. Very curious indeed! And even MORE curious in light of the fact Jerry McAfee appeared as a witness for Larry Maxwell, who went down hard on 18 felonies related to mortgage fraud. What is it the Book of Proverbs says about the consequences of bad companions?

Yes, sometimes men will revile you and say all manner of things about somebody because that person is trying to do GOOD. But, interestingly, often men will do the same thing because somebody is DOING BAD THINGS. And, as the Bible makes quite clear, even the Devil knows His scripture, and can quote it.

So here's a bit of scripture, and feel free to take it any way you like:

"By their works, ye shall know them."
