The Star Tribune is reporting the name of one victim in the "after hours club" shooting at 3859 Fremont Ave. N. is Erick Felton, who is the son of the ex-husband of Monique White; the homeowner who fought to save her house from foreclosure with help from the Occupy Movement. As of this moment, the Strib doesn't have the name of the second victim (or if they do, they haven't confirmed it enough to publish the name) but they're reporting his nickname is "Meaty" and he's in his 30s, the father of "several" children.
This information does not contradict, and appears to coincide, with information published by this blog that the second victim was Demetrius Lee Harper, DOB 4/7/80. Harper went by "Meady" on his Facebook page (Meady Neverenough Harper) and "Meady" sounds a whole lot like "Meaty." Yeah, it's the same guy. Friends are already leaving "RIP" messages on his page.
So now it's time to publish his criminal record and prove the usual thing which doesn't really need proving, but bears repeating and emphasis. This guy was living...
...a lifestyle that was bound to end in prison or death. In fact, Harper had been sentenced to 110 months in prison (that's not a typo!) for attempted murder, with credit for 187 days served. No telling how much time he actually served in prison, but I'm guessing he did a great deal of weight lifting while he was there. Harper was sentenced in 2001 and then had a long break in criminal activity until 2011, when he was convicted of using the name and birthdate of another person to falsely identity himself to police. So it looks like he spent most of a decade in prison.
Here's all the charges ever made against him in Minnesota, listed below, and (below each entry) how those charges were resolved.
27-CR-98-101389 HARPER, DEMETRIUS LEE 04/07/1980 10/08/1998 Hennepin Criminal/Traffic/Petty Downtown Crim/Traf Mandatory Closed OPEN BOTTLE, PASSENGER
Convicted. Had to pay a minor fine, but still couldn't even pull THAT off without the charge turning to a warrant at one point.
27-CR-00-035292 HARPER, DEMETRIUS LEE 04/07/1980 04/27/2000 Hennepin Criminal/Traffic/Petty Downtown Crim/Traf Mandatory Closed CONTROLLED SUB CRIME 3RD DEG-POSSESSION
Pled guilty. Appears to have done 21 months in prison with credit for 190 days served.
27-CR-01-101680 HARPER, DEMETRIUS LEE 04/07/1980 12/11/2001 Hennepin Criminal/Traffic/Petty Downtown Crim/Traf Mandatory Closed ATTEMPTED MURDER IN THE SECOND DEGREE (INTENTIONAL) ASSAULT IN THE SECOND DEGREE ASSAULT IN THE FIRST DEGREE
As discussed above, did hard time for this one.
27-CR-11-3558 211100388 211100388 211100388 HARPER, DEMETRIUS LEE 04/07/1980 02/07/2011 Hennepin Criminal/Traffic/Petty Brookdale Crim/Traf Mandatory Under Court Jurisdiction Use the name and date of birth of another person to any police officer for the purpose of falsely id Driving after suspension Open bottle law; non-certifiable - possession in a motor vehicle - passenger
Ah, FREEDOM!!! It's a decade later and, not surprisingly, Harper tries to use somebody else's identity but he gets caught and convicted. The other two charges were dropped.
27-CR-11-13257 HARPER, DEMETRIUS LEE 04/07/1980 05/09/2011 Hennepin Criminal/Traffic/Petty Downtown Crim/Traf Mandatory Under Court Jurisdiction TRAFFIC-DRIVERS LICENSE-DRIVING AFTER SUSPENSION
Pled guilty. Got a year's probation but managed to violate probation.
27-CR-11-22692 HARPER, DEMETRIUS LEE 04/07/1980 07/21/2011 Hennepin Criminal/Traffic/Petty Downtown Crim/Traf Mandatory Closed Domestic Assault-Misdemeanor-Commits Act With Intent to Cause Fear of Immediate Bodily Harm or Death Domestic Assault-Misdemeanor-Intentionally Inflicts/Attempts to Inflict Bodily Harm Disorderly Conduct-Brawling or Fighting Assault-5th Deg-Inflict or Attempt Bodily Harm Assault-5th Degree-Fear of Bodily Harm or Death Offensive Conduct Ordinance
All charges were dropped except the "offensive conduct" charge, for which he pleaded guilty. Certainly the charges stemmed from some kind of domestic incident. Looks like he was sentenced to three days with credit for three days, but the prosecutor did go through the step of submitting a witness list and getting it in the court file.
27-CR-11-37616 HARPER, DEMETRIUS LEE 04/07/1980 11/17/2011 Hennepin Criminal/Traffic/Petty Brookdale Crim/Traf Mandatory Closed Traffic-Drivers License-Driving After Suspension Traffic Regulation - Seat Belt Required - Driver and Passengers Must Use
Pled guilty to the driving after suspension, the other charge was dismissed. The judge was the Honorable Lloyd Zimmerman, a fine judge who took a stand against the outrageous conduct of attorney Jill Clark.
27-CR-12-391 HARPER, DEMETRIUS LEE 04/07/1980 01/05/2012 Hennepin Criminal/Traffic/Petty Downtown Crim/Traf Mandatory Under Court Jurisdiction TRAFFIC-DRIVERS LICENSE-DRIVING AFTER SUSPENSION
Pled guilty. AGAIN.
27-CR-12-7623 HARPER, DEMETRIUS LEE 04/07/1980 03/14/2012 Hennepin Criminal/Traffic/Petty Downtown Crim/Traf Mandatory Dormant DOMESTIC ASSAULT-MISDEMEANOR-COMMITS ACT TO CAUSE FEAR OF IMMEDIATE BODILY HARM OR DEATH Disorderly Conduct
Pled to disorderly conduct. The other charge was dismissed. Harper was on probation until July 10 of this year but managed to end his probation early by being shot dead.
In fact, he was wanted for a warrant that had been issued February 8.
