(Copyright? We don't need no stinking copyright!) blog post by John Hoff
Twenty-two hours ago, a participant on North Talk Facebook page was all, like, "Gee, we haven't had a murder for a while in North Minneapolis."
To which I replied, "AAAAHHHHHHH!!! Don't say that. You will jinx us."
Fifteen hours ago came stories in the mainstream media about two men dead in a shooting at 39th and Fremont at an illegal "after hours" establishment which had reportedly been frequented by members of a motorcycle club...
The club is located at 3859 Fremont Ave. N. and is owned by Yia N. Vang, whose address is PO Box 11682 Minneapolis, MN 55411. (Other information in online city property records lists Vang in "Elk River," but further address information is not present in the notoriously incomplete and out-of-date property records, including no sales history listed) It should be noted another man was wounded in the shooting but his injuries are not life threatening.
Not only is there no bar license for this address, there's no business license of any kind and 50 to 100 people were inside the club at 3 in the morning (!!) when the shots rang out. The city of Minneapolis, in its awesome administrative and regulatory power, had levied a fine of $220 against the property as part of an "administrative citation fee."
Besides Yia N. Vang being associated with the property, a pollution control annual bill associated with the property was issued to something called Muhammad Study Group just last year. However, one participant on North Talk claimed the study group moved out because of a flooded basement and mold growing on the walls and the owner being slow to make fixes.
Unconfirmed but very cumulative info is being bandied about on Facebook that one of the dead is a man named Demetrius Harper, whose Facebook name is Meady Neverenough Harper. The DOB listed for Harper is April 7, 1980, and he claims to be from St. Louis but currently residing in Minneapolis. Numerous Facebook friends are leaving him "RIP" messages.
The following photo shows Demetrius (apparently on the far left) at what appears to be some kind of low end nightclub, judging by the rigged up yet permanent-looking sound system. Unknown where this photo was taken but others in the picture are identified as Jerome Jackson, Keith Bart Loc Scott, and Renaldo Valentino Sept.
Photo from same source as previous
Harper's Facebook page includes a funeral tribute to his grandmother, who is from St. Louis, and a couple of R-rated sexual images, obviously not his own but "pass 'em around" Facebook art. One image shows a man performing anal or doggy style sex on a woman with the caption, "I will always have your back." Another image shows a tattooed man "flipping the bird" with both hands and the caption "Fuck the world."
Here are some other photos from the world of (reported, unconfirmed) homicide victim Demetrius Harper.
Here's another photo identified with the caption "At North Mpls."
Note how the chain link is affixed to the hand rail. I assume some kind of dog has the run of the entire front yard at this location. Does any reader recognize this address?
Below, another photo identified with "North Mpls." One of the individuals in the photo (presumably the male in the background) is identified as "Steve Erko."
Does any reader recognize this address?
The photos below speaks for themselves. The bottom two photos are identified with the words "At North Mpls."
The photo below shows where some of that money (however it was earned) may have gone. Check out those wheels. Another photo shows the wheels just by themselves.
On his Facebook page, in the "About" section, Harper wrote, "MONEY ON MY MIND, MONEY ON MY MIND, THIS MONEY IS ALL I THINK OF." For some reason, he was absent from Facebook a couple weeks and last posted on February 21.
His very last post was eerily prophetic:
"I been down so long the only place to go from here is up..."
One of my jailhouse roster postings lists his address as 6345 Lyndale Ave. S.
And his middle name was "Lee."
I will be attempting to dig up more info from the jail roster but at the moment there is another story about a guy with a gun barricaded inside a house and I'm off to cover THAT. Many on North Talk, including myself, have come to believe in the scary power of a jinx. There is discussion that no more talk will be allowed to take place about, oh, gee, we haven't had a murder in a long time, have we?
