Comment and Criticism, blog post by John Hoff
From The Twin Cities To Syria
The Washington Post, as well as pretty much all the mainstream media in the world, are reporting on the death of Douglas McArthur McCain...an American who died fighting for ISIS in Syria.

McCain spent a good part of his life in the Twin Cities metro area and as soon as I read in the Washington Post how McCain had a minor criminal record in Minnesota I thought, geez, I could totally look up his record on MNCIS...
Yes, in a single paragraph the Washington Post fairly summarizes his minor criminal record but Johnny Northside likes to provide information at a granular level to flesh out stories covered at a surface level by mainstream media.
Also, the Washington Post only covered McArthur's CRIMINAL record. Well, JNS blog asks, what about his CIVIL court record? Yes, he has a civil court record as well and it was totally missed by all major media.
The Nitty, The Gritty, And Then Death In Syria
What an exciting opportunity for a local blogger! Let's dive right in...
Here's how the Washington Post summarizes his record:
It was around that time that McCain started getting in trouble. Over the next eight years, he amassed nine misdemeanor convictions, according to Minnesota state court records. Problems began with a 2000 conviction for disorderly conduct. Then, in 2001, he was busted for misdemeanor theft. Two years later came a misdemeanor conviction for marijuana possession — his first of two minor busts for that offense. His driver’s license was eventually revoked, but McCain kept driving and got caught for that, too.
Here, as follows, are the actual MNCIS records pertaining to each of those charges and their result:
27-CR-00-072174 MCCAIN, DOUGLAS MCAUTHUR 01/29/1981 08/02/2000 Hennepin Criminal/Traffic/Petty Brookdale Crim/Traf Mandatory Closed DISORDERLY CONDUCT
Convicted, had a $100 fine but fine was later suspended. Four different judges touched the case at various points. Home address was listed as "New Hope, Minnesota."
27-CR-01-053273 MCCAIN, DOUGLAS MCAUTHUR 01/29/1981 06/28/2001 Hennepin Criminal/Traffic/Petty Brookdale Crim/Traf Mandatory Closed THEFT
Convicted. Got unsupervised probation. Conditions of probation included "stay away from yard." It's not clear to me what is meant by "the yard."
27-CR-03-038576 MCCAIN, DOUGLAS MCAUTHUR 01/29/1981 06/05/2003 Hennepin Criminal/Traffic/Petty Brookdale Crim/Traf Mandatory Closed NO DRIVERS LICENSE IN POSSESSION
Guilty. Five different judges touched the case. McCain died in Syria still owing $88 on this case.

Convicted of driving after revocation but the speeding charge was dismissed. For the first time, one of the cases has a public defender listed. McCain did five days in jail for this and was credited, with 40 days stayed. Didn't show up for the court hearings and a warrant was issued.
27-CR-04-059798 MCCAIN, DOUGLAS MCAUTHUR 01/29/1981 08/26/2004 Hennepin Criminal/Traffic/Petty Ridgedale Crim/Traf Mandatory Closed DRIVING AFTER REVOCATION
This case notes McArthur was also known to spell his name McAuthur with an extra "u." He was convicted, got credit for two days served. Numerous judges all touched the case. In this case, there was also a public defender.
52-VB-04-6198 RV 04985 MCCAIN, DOUGLAS MCAUTHUR 01/29/1981 11/04/2004 Nicollet Crim/Traf Non-Mand Closed Drugs-Possess/Sale Small Amounts of Marijuana Drivers' Licenses - Use Fictitious Name/DOB or Make False St
Convicted of the use of a false name but the other charge was dismissed. Got credit for 7 days served in jail.
27-CR-06-059013 MCCAIN, DOUGLAS MCAUTHUR 01/29/1981 08/25/2006 Hennepin Criminal/Traffic/Petty Brookdale Crim/Traf Mandatory Closed OBSTRUCTING LEGAL PROCESS
Convicted. At one point a warrant was issued because McCain didn't show up in court.
27-CR-08-14493 MCCAIN, DOUGLAS MCAUTHUR 01/29/1981 03/24/2008 Hennepin Criminal/Traffic/Petty Downtown Crim/Traf Mandatory Closed GIVE PEACE OFFICER FALSE NAME/BIRTHDATE/ID CARD
Convicted. Had a public defender. Served two days. Had a public defender. It should be noted that in every one of these cases, McCain's address was noted as "New Hope, Minnesota."
Terrorists Are Apparently Bad Credit Risks
Now comes the part I consider to be the most exciting, because it's the most exclusive: MNCIS shows two civil judgements against McCain. One is from a credit card and the other is from some kind of educational institution.
In 2004, McCain was sued by Academy College in Bloomington, Minnesota in case number 27-CO-04-1104012. Some kind of judgment apparently resulted but the exact amount is not listed. It would be interesting to know what McCain was studying in college.
In 2007, McCain was sued by an entity in Golden Valley, MN called Credit Acceptance Corporation. The suit resulted in a judgment against McCain of $6,336.83 which he died in Syria still owing. A writ of execution was returned in 2012.
Fight In Syria? Cheer For Chicago Bulls? Oh, Wait, Let's Go With Fight In Syria
Stories about McCain show he bounced around a lot and was most recently in Turkey. Notably, he was friends with another American who was killed fighting in Somalia in 2008.
Mainstream media are reporting McCain used the name "Duale ThaSlaveofAllah" on Facebook, but going to the actual page (click here if you have Facebook) shows the name of the profile was changed to "Duane Mahoney."
While there are some points of interest in McCain's criminal record and his use of social media, there is little notable or revealing or troubling. McCain was just as interested, it would appear, in the Chicago Bulls as he was in religion.
There is nothing which would make me think, "Oh yeah, this guy will go join with terrorists overseas. Better watch this one."
How, I ask, are we going to detect and catch these individuals who are going overseas to fight and train with terrorists? Where in all this data are the actual red flags to warn us?
How are we going to catch these guys before they return and cause deadly havoc in America?
