Winter usually brings a hiatus to homicides and shootings in North Minneapolis, but a number of participants in a Northside Facebook forum believe the pattern is different this year at least as far as the shootings are concerned. There appears to be some kind of confrontation happening between rival groups. It's unknown if a recent shooting downtown is related to the recent activity, or if the murder of Devonte Coppage in St. Paul could be involved. Often, when a popular gang member is murdered...
...there is a sudden flurry of activity and rival groups take positions against each other. Confrontations between large groups that start out as verbal confrontations are common, too.
So there's no way to tell, presently, if last night's incident was related to any ongoing gang beef. It's not like the gang bangers scrupulously keep us informed of their moves. If the bangers want to discuss who is beefing with who, whose fault it is, and who needs to die they are welcome to post their commentary in this forum.
But last night one credible witness reported in a public forum that shots were fired in or around 3527 Lyndale Ave. North, a rental property owned by Eric L. Bates. Twenty to thirty people, almost all minors and mostly female, ran from the house and into the streets. Then a group of them ran back into the house.
Police reportedly took twenty minutes to arrive with any squad at all and eventually had four squads at the scene. The renter at the house reportedly has a teenage daughter and a developmentally disabled son that she "screams at" a lot.
The city property records list the owner Eric L. Bates at that same address HOWEVER he is believed to reside at another home in "BC" (Brooklyn Center). Bates is reportedly a nice man but quite unresponsive to the complaints of neighbors. Maybe he'll get a little more responsive seeing his name and rental property address on the internet.
