BREAKING NEWS! EcoVillage Breaks Ground!

Post, photos, and video by the Hawthorne Hawkman

The first steps in new construction have started today in the Hawthorne EcoVillage!

If someone would have told me two years ago, in the midst of some of the toughest battles this neighborhood has seen, that this year we'd be building new houses in the EcoVillage, I'm not sure I'd have believed them. But here we are.

It's not just one house going up; we have new owners in the EcoVillage, another family will be arriving soon in a home featured on the Minneapolis/St. Paul Home Tour, and Habitat for Humanity will be building/renovating as many as ten homes in and around the EcoVillage. By the end of this year or early 2011, we'll likely have half a dozen or more new residents. We thank our dedicated partners in this project and the essential work from Hawthorne members!

(Do not click "Read More," but do celebrate NoMi successes like the Hawthorne EcoVillage!)

Permanent "We watch, we call" signs should be a requirement on all new construction in EcoVillage.

Here's a thank you to the resident of the EcoVillage who called me about the ground being broken, and then called jeff, so we could hurry up and get this story covered.

Our revitalization progress is unstoppable.

Go, NoMi, go!

Tore,

That's a good idea, but I think the thugs know that when they set foot in the EcoVillage that they are on our turf.

We watch. We call.

Tore,

Could you elaborate on why you think 'we watch, we call' signs should be a requirement?

I feel property owners should be able to do as they please.

Also, there are no signs up on my block in eco village... doesn't seem to be a problem so far.

As long as there are a few signs up all over the place I don't see how adding a sign to every yard would really help.

I watch and call... just don't see the necessity to advertise it.

Some light humor here - One day I saw that my dog had gotten out of the fence. Not aware that I was standing by the sign, I was looking down the sidewalk, yelling at my dog to come back. A guy walking by looked at me, looked at the sign, and said "Yup, YOU watch, YOU call!"

They should change those signs to "I'm a snitch!"

I think when we dedicate the EcoVillage, we could have a bronze dedication plaque...and the words at the bottom of the plaque could say, "We Watch, We Call."

Or maybe a bronze dedication plaque that ONLY says "We Watch, We Call."

You should change your name to "I'm a bitch."

Some people don't mind being snitches... in fact I kinda like it. It's fun to improve my neighborhood anonymously and the folks at 311 are usually quite friendly and eager to help.

If you want to live amongst criminals and filth then just keep on not snitching. We'll pick up the slack...

1117,

You've got a lot of catching up to do. You'd be better off if you just recognized that NoMi land is an urban wasteland and moved out.

The city should unincorporate it and bulldoze it. Perhaps after a few years it could turn into a nice state park or wild life reserve.

North Minneapolis already is a Wild Life Preserve complete with cannibalistic behavior. Too bad it is funded by the balance of us in the County and the State.

At least it provided a space for misfits to co mingle and stay away from the rest of us.

you are entitled to your opinion.

why don't you help me "catch up"?

I'm also curious where you live. nobody is forcing anybody to live in north and those who hate snitches are free to move out just like I am.

affordable housing is a necessity for a lot of people... and right now there are bargains in north like nowhere else in minneapolis.

So seriously... what's your argument for why I should move out?
