This blog has reported, extensively, a controversy over music videos by rapper Mental Mid ("Kobe Diss" and "No Competition") which have (it is quite fair to say) given severe offense to friends and allies of slain gang leader Tyrone "Ty Crack" Washington and put Minneapolis police on a state of alert which caused the cancellation of a much-anticipated concert by "Young Dro."
JNS blog has urged both sides to NOT kill each other and instead to continue making music airing their grievances. I have also been on the record stating I'll give public prominence to the music of both sides in the controversy, if that music is brought to my attention...
Of course, trying to understand the "sides" to this murderous controversy ("Taliban" street gang allied with "YNT" versus "19 Dipset," that much I do grasp) is not easy.
Some players in the controversy have three names...
A street name. A Facebook name. And a legal name.
And then there are gang names. And coded words and phrases which allude to gang names and street names and threats and/or criminal actions actual or alleged. In the midst of this dangerous urban madness, music is being produced which smashes the line between art and evidence, like the Dada art movement smashed the line between art and ordinary everyday function. (After saying "Dada art movement" it is of course necessary to point out Dada was just as much an anti-movement, and it's almost impossible to explain Dada; one must be like the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein and merely POINT by way of explanation)
I am TOLD by somebody whose opinion I am inclined to trust (on this topic but god knows if there's any trust with many other topics) this particular music video, above, is from somebody who is on the opposite side of the musical dispute swirling around the death of Tyrone "Ty Crack" Washington.
Also, AGAIN TO BE TOTALLY FAIR, it is important to point out the death of Washington may have been revenge for the death of a rival gang member. But which one? THAT is not entirely clear to me, but it's important to make clear Washington wasn't killed without some kind of CONTEXT and PRELUDE.
The hottest thread in the history of this blog started out just like this one; asking aloud, "Does this video contain important clues or information about the warring sides?"
If this is not the best music video to represent the other side (am I supposed to perform some kind of hand gesture thingy when I say "represent?" Or is it okay to do it without? I mean, like I KNOW this sort of thing, WTF) then kindly bring better and more representative videos to my attention and I will air those, fairly and squarely as part of commentary on "matter(s) of public concern."
I am also interested, down the line, in doing my kind-of, sort-of reviews of these music videos after they've had some play and discussion.
God knows Mental Mid likes my reviews. Check out what he posted on his Facebook.
And mind you...
That's currently his PROFILE PICUTURE!
