Jeff Skrenes of the Hawthorne Hawkman blog forwarded this photo yesterday, noting that utilities are being disconnected at the old Fire 'N' Ice building on West Broadway. This right after the former "mutated office building" once owned by Keith Reitman (which was, at one time, a massage place) was demolished yesterday.

Both buildings are being leveled to make way for the new Broadway Liquor Outlet which will feature both commercial space and apartments.

Jeff Skrenes (Hawthorne Hawkman) who lives right down the street at 26th and Penn noticed activity today and saw the "mutated office building" at 2419 Penn Ave. N. was in the midst of being demolished. Hawkman has work and family obligations and kindly kicked this info my way so I could rush to inform readers of revitalization progress, progress, progress on the West Broadway corridor.

Jeff Skrenes of the North by Northside blog was the first to tweet the information (on his NXNS Twitter account) that slumlord Keith Reitman's ugly "blue twins" at 2522 and 2520 Penn Ave. N. were demolished today.

Watch North by Northside blog in the next day or so for video and other information about the demolition.

The ugly "blue twins" were historic buildings which still had some potential until slumlord Keith Reitman neglected them into the landfill. Readers will recall Reitman's "blue twins" were the "winner, winner chicken dinner" of this blog's contest to determine what should Johnny Northside's next obsessive blogging target be.

With the blue twins now reduced to splinters and rubble, I will be announcing a new contest in the near future. Readers and fans are urged to put on your thinking caps in regard to which North Minneapolis livability issue is the most deserving of this blog's highly-focused, creative and critical attention.

So right after I left Ghazni Province in Afghanistan and arrived at Bagram Air Force Base...a paradise of internet access and mocha lattes, the only downside being five incoming fire alerts five nights in a row and sleeping in a big tent with, like, 100 other men...I learned about Friedman's Shoe Store caving in to my bloggy pressure campaign (they say they didn't, WHATEVER) and actually fixing up their unsightly glass. So the next logical question was...


...where to focus my harsh, burning light of blogospheric attention and criticism NEXT? Who is the most deserving? Where are results needed most? Where could such attention actually get results?

Well, I'm pleased to announce that after much thought, and input both public and behind the scenes, plus a vision in which Reitman appeared to me and said, "Johnny, Johnny, why are you persecuting me?" I've decided...

Our winner is "Level Three Slum Offender" Keith Reitman, whose "blue sisters" at 26th and Penn were falling to ruin BEFORE the tornado, are falling to ruin more AFTER the tornado, have official paper slapped all over them, sit right in the heart of an area desperately needing development, had historic potential once but it's rotted away like unharvested fruit, are the ultimate example of the bastard color known as "Reitman Blue," are only the foremost of MANY examples of scumoidal slumlordery by the aforementioned Reitman, plus I have a really good photo to use as an illustration, so that pretty much bags it.

Congratulations, Keith Reitman. Oh, what fun First Amendment attention you can expect until this eyesore is resolved. Maybe a blues song about the "blue sisters?" Maybe one North Minneapolis "revitalizer" after another posing in front of the properties (on the oh-so-public sidewalk) and holding their noses?

After enduring a long dry spell of little computer access at a Combat Outpost in Ghazni Province, Afghanistan, I now find myself at Bagram Air Force Base where things are a lot less muddy...where my life is rich with indoor plumbing, multiple entree choices and, best of all, a wireless internet signal.

Coming up for internet air today, I was overjoyed to discover...

...the North By Northside Blog is reporting that Friedman's Shoe Store is finally fixing their unsightly windows. Oh, sure, "good cop" Jeff Skrenes made some half-hearted remarks about how certain individuals (my ears are burning!) made too much of a big deal about the ass ugly windows. I'm paraphrasing here.

But between you, me, and the lamp posts bare of sign spam ripped down by both myself AND Mr. North By Northside, we all know it was public pressure and repeated shaming by this blog which finally got the windows fixed...just like, a couple years ago, the horrible "butt wall" situation was fixed at a certain Northside liquor store.

Now I firmly resolve to buy as many of my new shoes and (more importantly) my new BOOTS at Friedman's, for the rest of my life, and I urge other Northsiders to do the same. (Not that I buy THAT many new footwear items. I prefer to get my footwear from either the Salvation army or the REGULAR army) All the same.

Support Friedman's. I urge you.

Now then, the most important question at this point is...

WHO IS NEXT? What unsightly North Minneapolis neighborhood feature should this blog criticize again and again, repeatedly and colorfully, until it finally gets FIXED?

The rusty railroad bridge which forms the archway to our NoMi neighborhood?

In a previous blog post, North Minneapolis "super citizen" Megan Goodmundson documented the "debri spear" sticking out of a house long after the North Minneapolis tornado. Megan didn't name the slumlord owner in question but...



...given the distinctive "Keith Reitman blue" color of the house, it wasn't hard for readers to guess.

Megan checked on the house recently and sent me the photo, above.

Yup. The spear is still sticking in the house.

Well, I say, the race is on. Which will happen first? Will Keith Reitman pull the spear out of his house? Or will Friedman's Shoe Store fix its ugly, disgusting "butt glass?"

Motion for Default Judgment Against Slumlord Keith Reitman In 1564 Hillside Civil Suit...

Today I was reviewing the civil file in the Melony Michaels and John Foster civil case, which is a lawsuit against North Minneapolis slumlord Keith Reitman and a number of other individuals and entities for alleged and/or documented involvement in the notorious mortgage fraud at 1564 Hillside Ave. N., as well as another address not nearly as famous but equally fraudulent. Reitman is not alleged to be involved in the other address but was the seller of 1564 Hillside Ave. N.

Good ol' Keith Reitman likes to characterize himself as "one of the victims" in that fraud, even though Reitman was the seller of the property and nobody I've interviewed is aware of Reitman giving back so much as a nickel from the lucrative deal.

In a flurry of recent paper filed in the civil case...

...attempts are being made to get a default judgment out of Keith Reitman and several other entities whose names didn't really catch my attention so much, oh well.

A hearing on the motion for default judgment is scheduled for April 8, 8:30 AM, before the Honorable Judge Mel Dickstein.

Michaels and Foster are represented by Matthew David Resch of Wagner, Falconer and Judd.

This blogger is watching the work of this lawyer closely, ready to heap praise or scathing criticism upon him depending on how it goes. Recently, it appears to be going very well.

Word reaches me that on March 10, 2011, North Minneapolis Slumlord Keith Reitman was notified of his removal from the board of directors of the Jordan Area Community Council (JACC) in an email worded as follows...

Keith:

The March meeting of the Jordan Area Community Council was held last night, March 9th. Upon the conclusion of that meeting, you had missed 5 board meetings within a 12 month period. Within the current bylaws, anyone missing 5 meetings throughout the year, excused or otherwise, automatically becomes vacant.

Former Petro Gas Station On West Broadway May Go Down As Soon As Monday...

The Petro Gas Station on West Broadway is reportedly set to be demolished as early as 8 a.m. Monday morning, depending on the weather, etc. The gas station was formerly owned by notorious North Minneapolis slumlord Keith Reitman and was sold by Reitman to a developer, reportedly before the big economic crash of 2008.

The site is expected to have apartments in the not-so-distant future.

Slumlord Interests Ousted From JACC Board, And Much More In A North Minneapolis "Tale Of Two Cities"

In the last 10 weeks, this blog has been less active than any time in its history due to employment obligations which took me across the country to Columbia, South Carolina for a long period of intense training. While I often had free time, I seldom had convenient internet access, plus other obligations (like being an outstanding designated driver to my hard-partying buddies) kept me pretty tied up.

Now, with my fingers comfortably back at the keyboard, and hot content ready to roll in the usual prolific Johnny Northside style, I thought it would be fun to review some of the amazing changes which have taken place during the last ten weeks. It's incredible how quickly our neighborhood changes, evolves, and revitalizes even in a relatively short span of time. Being out of the loop for ten weeks and then trying to catch up gives me a whole new appreciation for just how quickly our neighborhood is changing.

* First, and most recently, three nights ago the Jordan Neighborhood had its annual meeting and (for the second year in a row) managed to elect a slate of candidates to its board without any of the drama which, once upon a time, was synonymous with Jordan Neighborhood politics. In fact, the only drama was something positive: bylaws were changed so that mere property ownership in the neighborhood isn't enough to qualify individuals for board membership, not anymore. What this means, effectively, is shameless slumlords like Keith Reitman will no longer have such a powerful role in Jordan politics.

Best of all, the bylaw change took place right in front of Keith Reitman, but other than barking briefly and in a paranoid manner over whether somebody was "whispering" to the chair of the meeting--saying something, whining something about open meeting laws, blah blah blah, as though open meeting laws ever regulated whispering--Keith David Reitman was powerless to stop the change in the bylaws. As of that moment...

...Rietman no longer has a vote in JACC business. Though this seems like a relatively minor change, progress in our neighborhood is a moving mosaic made up of such minor changes. In my absence, other bloggers kept the neighborhood informed of important developments, such as these:

* Jimmy Carter's visit to the Eco Village, reported in detail by Jeff Skrenes on the Hawthorne Voices blog.

* 1564 Hillside Ave. N. was demolished, reported in detail by Hillside Chronicles.

* Decent people in the Jordan Neighborhood have grown increasingly upset with Steve Meldahl, who has been dubbed "Slumeldahl" by NoMi Passenger. WARNING: Slumeldahl has NOT been approved by the FDA for neighborhood usage, and has been known to have serious side effects, such as urban blight and low curb appeal. The fiery "Irving Inquisition" blog has been on top of Meldahl.

* Thug-on-thug homicidal violence. Yawn. What else is new? There are two different worlds in North Minneapolis, and one of those worlds is actually very safe, comfortable, and enjoyable. And then there are thuggish idiots who kill each other with whatever weapon is available, including a speeding vehicle. Outside observers should not be misled by colorful mainstream media reports of such criminal violence: the "revitalizer" lifestyle is gaining ground in North Minneapolis, and the "thug lifestyle" is retreating. It's my hypothesis that North Minneapolis thugs are killing each other over increasingly smaller territory, and increasingly more limited areas of influence. North Minneapolis is truly a tale of two cities.

* The "Tripping Cows" mural was painted over at the Kemps Dairy facility.

* NoMi resident Brian Reichow married the girl of his dreams. Brian, sorry I missed your wedding. I did get text updates through the whole wedding and reception and almost felt like I was present.

* The "thug memorial riot" took place. Some folks just can't behave themselves, even while mourning their dead. This is another good argument in favor of not allowing "thug shooting memorials" to remain on trees, fences, etc. Did I mention "a tale of two cities?" Yes, I certainly did.

* I was re-elected to the Hawthorne Neighborhood Council Board, even while not there to speak in my own favor at the annual meeting. Thank you, friends and neighbors.

* Jerome Kingrussell, the notorious "Imposter Foster" from the Larry Maxwell mortgage fraud trial, was arrested and held without bail.

* Principals of Dana D III pled guilty to mortgage fraud.

All these amazing events happened in A MERE TEN WEEKS, and I've actually left a lot of important stuff out. So what will the next ten weeks bring? What will the next year, the next five years, the next ten years bring to North Minneapolis?

These ten weeks have hammered home two lessons for me:

1. Though I intend to play a large and highly-active role in the positive changes taking place in our neighborhood, change will take place no matter what. Even if this blog grew silent, even if work forced me to leave the neighborhood or the COUNTRY for months at a time, Urban Utopia is headed toward NoMi.

Urban Utopia in North Minneapolis is unstoppable.

2. During times when this blog is unable to play a very active roll, other committed bloggers take up the slack and use grassroots media to move the revitalizer agenda forward.

Because of this--once again--Urban Utopia is unstoppable.

To all the readers who have been so loyal to this blog: I am sorry that I was gone for so long, but it was necessary so I could pay my child support and the taxes on my house. (My goodness, what will the hateful haters have to hatefully hate about in light of THIS development?) I also wish to give a special thank you to neighborhood "super citizen" Megan Goodmundson, who virtually kept my blog on life support in my absence.

Recycling and Reusing the House of Fraud

The real chronicle of the demolition of 1564 Hillside, a.k.a. "The House of Fraud," is taking place here.

But while celebrating this small and huge victory in person, I was able to take this informative video of the contractor telling us what sort of tedious efforts will be taken to recycle and reuse a large majority of the material from demolished houses.

This house was used in an elaborate criminal ring of mortgage and real estate fraud combined with devastating cases of identity theft. "Golden Chicken" No Longer Open For "Bisness," No Great Loss...

I heard a few times the fried chicken was pretty good at "Golden Chicken," 2402 Penn Ave. N., but the establishment is better known for being the location where Level Three Sex Offender Peter Rickmyer got himself in hot water because he spanked minors for sexual gratification under the ruse of "punishing" them for, well, not working hard at their poultry preparing duties or something like that.

The building is currently owned by an "Irving Herman," but the taxpayer is listed as notorious North Minneapolis slumlord Keith David Reitman, click here for more info.

A little more than a week ago, I got a powerful hankering for fried chicken and I thought...

...well, what the heck. I'm sure all the surfaces have been cleaned and un-grossified since those long ago, far away days when "Spanky Pete" was running the show over there. And I'd heard, REPEATEDLY, the chicken was actually pretty good and affordably priced. So I dropped by and found...

Oh, no. They're "closed for bisness."

I should be a little sad about this, because I never had an opportunity to sample their offerings but, well, it's not like I can't go ANYWHERE on West Broadway and find a selection of deeply fried "wings and things."

So, I say, no great loss and maybe this change might even be looked upon as a small bit of NoMi progress. Perhaps something cuter, trendier, artsier, more upscale will go into that space.

One can hope and dream, even with a building owned by Keith D. Reitman.

Years Of Litigation For Slumlord Keith Reitman, Here Are Some Details...

Keith Reitman, a well-known North Minneapolis slumlord who was involved in the infamously fraudulent sale of 1564 Hillside Ave. N., has a long history of being involved in litigation. How long is that history? Well, print out this blog post on paper, lay the paper end-to-end, and tell me if Reitman's litigation history is longer than your arm.

Be sure to recycle the paper.

To be fair, Keith Reitman will tell you he was an innocent victim of the 1564 Hillside Ave. N. swindle. But to be even MORE fair, you have to wonder how this "innocent victim" managed to sell that crappy house for so much money, yet still call himself a victim.

What I would call "fair" would be for all of Reitman's profits from that deal to end up in the hands of the true victim: John Foster, a decent man whose identity and credit rating were stolen to make the deal possible. That would be the BEGINNING of fairness. Then, to continue in the spirit of fairness, one must consider pain and suffering and punitive damages. Then we get somewhere NEAR the land of "fair."

But I digress. I digress because it's very difficult to even MENTION Keith Reitman without bringing up the notoriously fraudulent "1564" deal. But this is not a blog post about THAT. Instead, I would like to highlight the long litigation history of Keith Reitman, which can be pulled up through Minnesota's online court records. Minor commentary about some of the cases can be found in my parenthetical comments...

It is believed but not 100 percent confirmed that all of these cases involve the same well-known Keith Reitman who holds a seat on the JACC board, but didn't show up at the last regularly-scheduled JACC meeting.

Johnny Northside Dot Com previously reported on a trial scheduled for today, in which North Minneapolis slumlord Keith Reitman is being sued over a small child falling from a window of his "ugly ass chocolate brown building" on the 1400 block of West Broadway. This is the third documented instance of a child falling from a building owned by Keith Reitman, by Reitman's own admission under oath.

However, today's trial has been delayed due to "issues the judge is taking under advisement" according to one of the judge's clerks. It is unknown when the trial will resume.

Slumlord Keith Reitman, whose ownership of the "ugly ass chocolate brown building" has been often mentioned by this blog, is now being sued over a child falling from one of the windows at the building in question, listed as 1411 West Broadway in the lawsuit. A quick review of the case file reveals interesting details of the Reitman slumlord empire and previous incidents involving children falling from the windows of a different building owned by Keith Reitman.
