A respected member of the community sent me an email after my "Six Crime Families Of North Minneapolis" article, asserting that my list was missing a very important surname:
My source laid out a long, complicated and bloody tale about the Fergusons with enough detail and citations to sources that I am convinced. Ferguson is one of the crime families. Here is the tale, as told by my source and supplemented by my digging where my source's tale led.
The first place the tale led was prison...
"It all starts with this inmate," wrote my source, pointing me to James Leon Ferguson, OID Number 166127, DOB 12/22/1966. Ferguson is serving a life sentence for murder. He is the patriarch of the Ferguson clan.
Who James Ferguson killed is described in an appeal case, State v. Minnesota v. James Leon Ferguson, as follows:
(O)n the evening of November 11, 1991, defendant James Ferguson walked down a sidewalk in south Minneapolis to a station wagon parked in front of an apartment building. When close to the station wagon, he intentionally and repeatedly fired into the front seat, one shot fatally striking Ray Kennedy, the front seat passenger, in the back of the head, and three shots, closely grouped together, wounding the driver, Tony Jenkins, in his left side. There was evidence that Ferguson's companion, Archie Braylock, fired into the rear seat of the station wagon where two people were sitting without hitting anyone. Ferguson and Braylock, together with a third companion, fled the scene, with Ferguson the last to leave. When Ferguson was arrested some days later, he claimed he had not been present at the shooting; later he changed his story to claim self-defense.
This was back in the old "Murderapolis" days, but my source asserts a whole brood of criminals sprang from the loins of James Leon Ferguson, one of which was Ju-Chaun Marquis Ferguson, a/k/a JDawg Ferguson, who was a homicide victim this spring. My source says "Jdawg" was the son of James Leon Ferguson and a woman named Chauncie McMullen.
In regard to JDawg, my source says as follows:
My source further asserts the uncle of Jdawg was a guy with the improbable name of Godschild Saint Slaughter , who worked with Jdawg at Dawgy Ent. (Entertainment)
Pictures of Jdawg, like the one below, remain on The Facebook page of Dawgy Ent.
My source states there are, for lack of a better word, two Ferguson "patriarchs" who are related and they had a passel of offspring, many of which went down the wrong path and trouble our city to this very day.
James Leon Ferguson was one of the patriarchs. I'll write more later about the other.
My source states a bunch of Ferguson progeny have the surname "Slaughter" or "McCaskill" (which they tend to spell "McCaskel" on Facebook, but "McCaskill" in voluminous police records. It is also common to see the name as "Slaughter-McCaskel."
I am working with my source to get as much of a "family tree" as possible but this blog operates on the "publish what we know for sure as quickly as possible" principal, (click here for prime example) rather than waiting for somebody to write up the entire Book of Numbers with all the "begats" and conveniently toss it into my lap.
