"Atlas Pillar" Gets Reinforcements...

Photo and blog post by John Hoff

Some months ago, I wrote about Connie Nompelis' house in the Farview Park Historic District (the one she bought or more accurately STOLE for a mere $7,900) and how the lone, brave "Atlas Pillar" on the porch was getting reinforcements. Well, last night was one of those neighbors-helping-neighbors kinda nights, where snow got shoveled and...

Folks hung out drinking wine. I noticed the "Atlas Pillar" did indeed have its reinforcements in place and the porch no longer appeared to be defying gravity. Of course, the replacement posts don't exactly match but that's part of the quirky allure of the house. All kinds of repairs are taking place at the house--all with proper paid permits--and, best of all, this house is intended to end up as an owner-occupied structure, not yet another rental.

The "reinforcement pillars" were salvaged from another house being demolished in Hawthorne!

Yes, thanks for reminding me. In fact, those pillars now on the porch are NOT the ones Connie had in the back of the truck, right? (See the blog post linked in this story)

She bought those, as I recall, but then better and more suitable pillars were salvaged from a house being demolished in our neighborhood.

Do you remember which house it was?

I know where the house was, but don't know the exact address. It was on a cross street of 4th St somewhere in between Farview and W Bro. I have a pic of the house in process of demolition with those posts in the pic too!

As I understand it, the posts came from the house that used to reside on the lot next door to Brian and Mike's.
