Cool Old Remnants Of The Past In The Eco-Village
Photos By John Hoff
While I was documenting the volunteer work at the homes of Patty Cake and the Polish Lady, some small details caught my eye...
Check out the old board in the Polish lady's garage. She says the garage was there when she bought the house, so the board has been there more than 40 years. It appears to have been part of a...what? It reminds me of a...railroad shipping crate?
Also, note the old bricks that say "IND BLOCK BRAZIL IND." (I assume that stands for "Indiana Block, Brazil, Indiana.)
The municipal website for Brazil, Indiana says the city's history is rich with involvement in the "brick and clay industry."
The Polish Lady told me the old bricks came from Patty Cake's driveway, when the driveway was redone many years back. The Polish lady grabbed a few for her yard. Now the yard is being redone. The Polish lady's garden was spectacular before, but now she has A LOT MORE ROOM to plant EVEN MORE STUFF.

Yes, the brick is from Brazil, Indiana. I live there, and while the plant that made those bricks is long gone, many of those bricks can be found in our old buildings and even a few streets.
