A large contingent of Hmong arrived at the September 1 rally, and kept together the whole time rather like the Somali and Oromo groups. Here, some in the Hmong group make their way to the street to stand, patiently, in a kind of formation...waiting for the march to kick off. Note the parasols to protect against sun, not rain.
And Now For Something Completely Different
On another note; a couple days ago I was in one of my favorite Hmong restaurants in St. Paul, eating a big bowl of beef tripe and tendon pho with fresh basil leaves, and I was reading the Hmong newspaper which had a story about an upcoming Clint Eastwood movie called "Gran Torino." Eastwood will star as a grumpy Korean War vet who gets involved in the lives of some Hmong teenagers to keep them from being recruited by a gang. The movie will feature a cast of unknown young Hmong actors. You watch. I predict this movie will be a BIG DEAL, especially as the always-in-and-out-of-retirement Clint Eastwood seems to be determined pass the last embers of his acting legacy to a new crop of actors.
Notably, the small Hmong paper in St. Paul had a complete, richly detailed inside scoop. Hollywood media were, as of a few days ago, talking about the "mystery" of this Eastwood movie and wondering what it will be about. Speculation is rampant that this movie is, in fact, "Dirty Harry 6."
Geez, read the little Hmong papers and accounts like this one in the Indy media. (Click here) Those sources will tell you what "Gran Torino" is all about and it sounds great, a movie I'll really want to see, and possibly a milestone for the Hmong in America.
