RNC 2008: Breaking It Down And Making It Plain (But It's Still Art, Man)

Now HERE is an example of costuming and pageant spectacle which works perfectly, without any missing, confusing, or garbled elements. Here, members of...

...the Bush administration are paraded down the street in shackles and striped prisoner outfits. But the piece is not passive; it calls attention to itself, it interacts, it interprets in the form of the loud, talking police "bobby" who says to the crowd, "Be careful! Stay back! These are dangerous people! Don't get too close, they might lash out at you!"

And the actors play along, of course, moving toward the crowd suddenly like mad dog criminals, growling but not talking, of course, because you can't really talk clearly from behind a big paper mache head.

Perfectly conceived, costumed, and executed. Two thumbs up. This performance stands out against others which were merely "good effort." Note how one of the performers lacks a striped shirt or he is DETERMINED to wear the "Code Pink" symbolic color, but he has covered over this performance flaw with an "OIL IS TASTY" sign.

Nice. Good recovery.

As the piece passes by, the audience sees the depiction of John McCain as a little doggie on a skateboard being dragged behind. This doesn't blow the continuity of the piece, but provides a final comical gag. Perfect. Brilliant. The sweat must have been pouring off these performers by the bucket. Yet the show must go on, and it did.

Applause. Encore! Encore!

P.S. The "Bush Head" doesn't look Bush-like enough. That needs to be fixed.
